3 English and Maths Examples of our writing explaining how the digestive system works. English and Maths News for the Spring term In our English studies this term, we have enjoyed learning about explanation texts and short stories. Using scientific vocabulary, we have produced some detailed explanation texts explaining how the human digestive system works. During our Rainforests topic we have written short adventure stories about explorers. We have focused on setting and character descriptions and the various problems explorers may encounter. To support our descriptive writing, our grammar lessons have concentrated on expanded noun phrases and complex sentences. The children have continued working on the challenging spelling lists for Years 3 and 4. A big feature of maths this term has been the Times Table Challenge. The children have been regularly practising their times tables. This has had a fantastic response and the children have made excellent progress with their knowledge of the times table facts. The children have also investigated shape, measurement, fractions and statistics. We have enjoyed measuring objects in maths.

4 ELF and PSHE In our class assemblies we have been thinking about the four British Values. The main focus of ELF has been creative skills. We held an art exhibition for parents showcasing our artistic talents. We have also discussed British Values whilst studying the Benjamin Zephaniah poem The British (serves 60 million) during our guided reading sessions.

5 Events, awards and celebrations A collection of photos which highlight the opportunities we have had this term to create success stories. Art gallery I enjoyed sharing my art work with my parents. 6 Our dynamic curriculum The pictures below reflect the wide range of exciting learning which has taken place this term. Collaborating We have been working on our golf skills in P.E. Investigating We conducted a science experiment investigating how the digestive system works. Resourceful We investigated the effects of using different types of materials to create our rainforest artwork.

7 SMSC and British Values The children have been reflecting on spiritual, moral, social and cultural aspects of their learning through art, poetry and celebrations. We researched the artwork of Oenone Hammersley. Inspired by her creations, we made our own rainforest artwork.

8 Trips, events and visitors Trips and visits this term have included the following: Flamingo Land Art Exhibition Visitors Mrs Savic told us all about her job as an anaesthetist. It made me feel better about hospitals. Ava Hawkey We really enjoyed holding a creature from each layer of the rainforest. Sam Morley It was really interesting finding out about what an osteopath does. Gabby Nelson

9 ICT and Computing The children in Years 3 and 4 have been investigation using If commands in Scratch to create games involving questions. The children have built on their previous programming skills to make question and answer games. They then added a variable to keep a score. We have also spent time discussing how we can search for information safely online and how we can make an informed decision on the reliability of a website. Using our internet search skills, we found information about our Staying Alive topic and included this information in our Microsoft PowerPoint presentations. We learned about how we can add effects and animations to make our presentations more exciting.
