Morales-Molina moralescbcmr@gmail.com I. Course Description This course is designed to provide English advanced students a level of higher achievement by integrating oral and written communication skills through a variety of genre such as essays, short stories, the novel, and poetry. Vocabulary and grammar will be integrated in the course activities. Student performance will be evaluated through exams, quizzes, vocabulary and grammar, as well as other forms of assessment. Proficiency will be expected in the use of technology in order to record and produce documents that will help students attain independence as a literate person in an ever-changing global community. II. Course Objectives By the end of the year, the students will be able to: 1. Communicate effectively in formal and informal speech situations and speak with greater fluency. 2. Express thoughts in grammatically correct sentences and phrases in both oral and written form. 3. Improve comprehension and analytical skills though the reading of nonfiction and fictional works. 4. Use essay models as the basis for further development of composition skills.
2 5. Use, interpret and analyze audiovisual media. 6. Use word processing and publishing software to create documents. III. Skills 1. Read informational texts (Expository essay). 2. Identify main ideas. 3. Evaluate persuasion and rhetorical devices. 4. Summarize a text. 5. Plan prewriting and drafting strategies to develop an essay. 6. Determine Word choice, voice and sentence structure. 7. Edit and publish a final product. 8. Vary sentence patterns. 9. Recognize and identify elements of a nonfiction novel. 10. Analyze main idea, character, themes, setting and plot in a novel. 11. Identify forms of poetry and poetic language. 12. Read and interpret selected poems. 13. Identify figurative language. 14. Analyze Imagery. 15. Identify the Speaker in poetry. 16. Analyze the elements and forms of oral tradition. 17. Apply historical and cultural context to readings. 18. Analyze a myth 19. Analyze an Epic and an Epic Hero. 20. Apply correct grammar and vocabulary in writing. IV. Evaluation Criteria Criterion #1: Tests and Quizzes (At least two tests and two quizzes per trimester): 200 pts. Criterion #2: Communication Skills (Four to five oral or written activities per trimester): 100 pts. Criterion #3: Assessment (Four to five activities per trimester): 100 pts.
