2 Tips for exam day: Sleep Well go to bed early the day before the exam and get a goods night sleep Eat Well have a healthy breakfast, don t eat sugary snacks before the exam, they will make you feel tired later on, probably before you finish writing Make sure you have something to write with Read the instructions and questions carefully reading the questions will tell you useful information that will help you understand the situations; underline key information in the questions. Make Notes It s OK to write on and mark up your question paper. You can underline parts of the reading text, notices etc. or write things down while you listen. Use your time well If you can t answer a question, move on and come back later. You shouldn t spend all your time on one question. You need to spend time answering all the questions. Check your answers After you finish, look back and check your answers. Make sure you have answered all the questions and check your spelling, punctuation and grammar in your writing. Answer all the questions Don t leave any answers blank. If you are not sure, guess!

3 Reading and writing question type 1 Question Type 1 Match five sentences to eight notices. 5 questions In this part you have to understand the main message of a sign or notice. These texts are usually the kind of text you can find on roads, in railway stations, airports, shops, restaurants, offices, schools, etc. There are also five sentences and you have to match each sentence to one of the texts. Tips! Look for words in the sentence and notice that have the same meaning. They might not be the same words. Names of places or people in the notices may help you find the answers. Read the beginnings of the sentences carefully

5 Reading and writing question type 2 Question Type 2 Choose the correct words to complete five sentences. 5 questions This part is a test of vocabulary. You have five sentences and there is a missing word in each one. There are three possible answers and you have to choose the best word to fill each gap Tips! Read the sentence carefully! The three possible answers might mean almost the same. Try all three words in the space before you choose your answer. Look at the words before and after each space.

6 Reading and writing question type 2 PART 2 QUESTIONS 6-10 Read the sentences about a birthday. Choose the best word (A, B or C) for each space. For questions 6-10, place A, B or C in the space. 7 Reading and writing question type 3a Question Type 3a Choose the correct answer to complete five short conversations. 5 questions In this part we test how well you understand and can use the language you need for everyday life. In 3a the five questions are short conversations. The question is what the first person says and you then have three possible responses. To find the right answer, you have to think what the second person usually says in this situation. Tips! Read the question with all 3 possible answers before you choose. Check that pronouns (I, me, you, he, her, them we, it etc.) and people or things match each other. Watch out for Would like / What s it like / Do you like questions.

9 Reading and writing question type 3b Question Type 3b Fill five gaps in a conversation by choosing from eight possible answers. 5 questions In this part we test how well you understand and can use the language you need for everyday life. In 3b The five questions are part of a longer conversation which has missing sentences. The conversation may take place in a shop, a hotel, a restaurant, etc. or in various work, social or study situations. You have a list of eight possible sentences (A H) which you can use to complete the conversation. You have to choose one sentence for each space, so you don t need all of the sentences. Tips! Think carefully about the kind of answer each question needs. Remember the sentence after the space is just as important as the one before.

11 Reading and writing question type 4 Question Type 4 Read a text and choose the correct answers to seven questions. 7 questions This part consists of a longer text (about 230 words) and seven questions. These may be multiple-choice questions with three possible answers (A, B or C) or you may have seven statements and you have to decide if each statement is A Right, B Wrong or C Doesn t say Tips! The questions come in the same order as the answers in the text. Read the article careful! Underline key information in the questions and in the text. There is usually an even mix of As, Bs and Cs.

12 PART4 QUESTIONS Reading and writing question type 4 Read the article about the Edinburgh Festival. Are sentences 21 Right (A) or Wrong (B)? If there is not enough information to answer Right (A) or Wrong (B), choose Doesn t say (C). For questions 11-17, mark A, B or C. Visit the Edinburgh Festival! Every year, thousands of people come to Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland, to be part of the Edinburgh Festival. For three weeks every August and September the city is filled with actors and artists from all over the world. They come to Edinburgh for the biggest arts festival in Britain. During this time the streets of the city are alive with music and dance from early morning until late at night. You can even see artists painting pictures on the streets. One of the best parts of the Festival is the Fringe, where students do comedy shows in small halls and cafes. Tens of thousands of tourists come to the festival to see new films and plays and hear music played by famous musicians. This year, you can see over five hundred performances with actors from more than forty countries. The tickets for these performances are quite cheap and it is usually easier to see your favourite star in Edinburgh than it is in London. So come to Edinburgh next summer, but remember it can be difficult to find a room, so why not book your hotel now!

14 Reading and writing question type 5 Question Type 5 Choose the correct words to complete a text. 8 questions In this part you have to show that you understand and can use English grammar correctly. There is a text for you to read, but some of the words are missing. These can be verb forms, prepositions, conjunctions, pronouns, etc. For each missing word, there are three possible answers and you have to choose the right one Tips! Read the whole text before you start reading your answers. Read the whole sentence carefully when you choose a connecting word (and, or, so, but etc.) answer. Check that be/do/have answer goes with the main verb.

16 Reading and writing question type 6 Question Type 6 Read the definitions and then write the words and spell them correctly. 5 questions This part is about vocabulary. You have to find the right word for something and spell it correctly. All five words will be from the same topic, for example, jobs, food, things you can find in a house, etc. For each word you have to find, there is a definition in simple English and we give you the first letter of the word to help you. Tips! You must spell the words correctly. Count the number of spaces carefully. Don t forget silent letters and don t forget spelling rules. The main words in each description sentence will help you find your answer.

17 PART 6 QUESTIONS Read the descriptions (36-40) of different words. What is the word for each description? The first letter is already there. There is a space for all the other letters in the word. You have to read a short text which may be a note, and a reply to that note. It may also be a single letter. In the text there are some missing words and you have to find the right word to fill each space. Tips! Read the whole text once before you add any missing words. Check the words that come before and after each space carefully. Use a connecting word if the words on each side of the space look like complete sentences.

You have to read two short texts (note, , advertisement, etc.) and use the information to fill in a form, notice, diary entry or other similar document. Tips! Remember you will need to read both texts to find all the answers. Look for words in the texts that mean the same as prompts on the form. Make sure you copy long numbers and names correctly.
