2 GELP: system leadership in action GELP, The Global Education Leaders Partnership comprises system leaders seriously committed both to transforming education in practice and to developing the personal skills they need to lead the changes required. At the heart of GELP s mission is the development and implementation, at scale, of new pedagogies, curricula and assessment that enable every student to develop and to demonstrate higher order capabilities. For this to be realised, appropriate technology, leadership, professional development, policies and governance also have to be in place. National and regional governments, research organizations, philanthropists and other providers of education connect in GELP to collaborate to solve shared challenges, generate fresh insights and ideas and develop policy and practice interventions. GELP works with: The Centre for Education Research and Innovation (OECD, Paris) The World Innovation Summit on Education (Qatar) The Asia Society and the Global Cities Education Network (New York) New Pedagogies for Deep Learning (Toronto) The Centre for Curriculum Redesign (Boston) Global Education Futures (Russia) and the International Summit on the Teaching Profession (OECD/Education International).

3 GELP: a leader in a global network GELP is part of a vibrant and growing global network of organizations, programs and initiatives that share a concern for the future of education. Each member of the network provides a unique perspective captured variously in thought leadership and opportunities to engage and connect. GELP is and will remain at the heart of this network for three reasons: It was among the first and many of the people and ideas featured in the network started out in GELP. The ambition of the heart of GELP is bold and radical. 4 GELP origins This was not always such a crowded space. GELP began in 2009 when a group of system leaders in four countries, ambitious for the future of education in their jurisdictions, decided to work together to transform their education systems so that every learner could develop the skills, knowledge and dispositions they need to survive and thrive in the 21 st century.

5 GELP in numbers In just 5 years, GELP grew from a group of 4 into a worldwide partnership, involving 13 jurisdictions in 9 countries on 6 continents. Since 2010 GELP has gathered twice every year at 12 global learning events, each engaging around 100 partners. Events have been hosted in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Finland, India, New Zealand, South Africa, South Korea, and the USA.

6 Systems under pressure So what was it that brought this enlightened group of system leaders together? They recognized that the world is changing fast and that the pressure on formal education was building. They realized that more of the same would not do, that improvement was taking too long and that they needed to: radically transform schools and schooling for the future and that this was too big a job to take on alone, so they.. set aside international competition, in order that they could instead collaborate to learn with and from each other; and together they decided to.. focus on education systems and system conditions and understanding how these affect learners and learning at scale. 7 Thought leadership and a call to action By 2013, GELP was ready to collect together just some of the extraordinary insights they had accumulated in Redesigning Education. This groundbreaking publication explores the influential ideas that GELP incubated in those first three years : New Players GELP was early to the debate about the upsurge of new providers of education and bold in exploring the implications for education systems, such as equity, quality assurance and certification. Design principles GELP advanced a radical vision for powerful, future focused learning and proposed a set of underpinning principles for redesigning education Scaling and diffusing innovation GELP is an international leader in building on exceptional individual models to spread their influence and effects system wide. 8 GELP at the Leading Edge Valerie Hannon and Anthony Mackay are the Co chairs of GELP Valerie is the principal author of GELP s thought leadership. GELP global events have seen previews and launches of several of Valerie s publications and her influence is to be found in many GELP inspired programs and initiatives. Learning a Living (2013) was commissioned by WISE and launched at their annual conference in Qatar as well as at GELP Rio De Janeiro in Look out for Valerie s latest book THRIVE: Schools reinvented for the real challenges we face (Autumn 2016) Anthony leads on GELP convenings and on the growing network of networks. Anthony is CEO of the Centre for Strategic Education in Australia, Senior Advisor to the National Centre on Education and the Economy, Washington DC and Expert Advisor to OECD/CERI and to Asia Society s Global Cities Education Network. Together with Valerie, Anthony is a Board Director of the Innovation Unit UK. Anthony is Chair, Australian Council for Educational Research, Deputy Chair of the Education Council New Zealand and Deputy Chancellor, Swinburne University, Melbourne, Australia. 9 GELP Impact Transforming leaders The honest collegial critique and challenge that happens at GELP is one of the most powerful things in my career. One of the problems of change leadership is that you often feel quite isolated. At GELP we grapple with big ideas and big decisions around new metrics, new curriculum big decisions. GELP Partner GELP, at its heart is a capacity building leadership learning initiative. The transformational learning journeys system leaders embark upon as they connect with, contribute to and learn from GELP are both intensely personal and highly social. GELP leaders embody the change they want and need to see in their systems; promoting and modelling mind and behaviour shifts; leading with moral purpose and stewardship and embracing an enlarged learning purpose for societies and for the planet. GELP provides frameworks, models and histories which empower and embolden system leaders. They access practical designs and tools for purposeful and productive convening of diverse interest groups, and insights and ideas which constructively challenge dominant discourses of efficacy, efficiency and effectiveness with a clear vision for learning excellence and equity for all. 10 GELP Impact Transforming learning The British Columbia curriculum was co-designed by teachers, and adapted with communities to reflect the interests and passions of local students South Korea introduced a Free Semester program in all middle schools, to extend learning beyond academic subjects to include skills and character education for every student In New York City: The izone Academy, a school without walls was opened, offering personalised learning to any student in NYC regardless of where they enrolled The Beijing Academy was the first school of its kind in China a model school, with an international curriculum for Chinese students. New coalitions between funders and providers in the major cities and states in Brazil formed to transform education in this young, fast-moving and ambitious nation Learning Frontiers brought groups of schools together in hubs with cultural organisations, employers, social innovators etc. to design engaging learning experiences for young Australians at risk of disengagement.
