INTRODUCTION A survey of English literature from the early Romantic writers to the Twentieth Century. Although careful attention is given to the historical, social, and intellectual developments that gave rise to the literature, the emphasis of the course is on the individual selections themselves as outstanding expressions of the English literary heritage. The course employs critical reading, thinking, and writing skills in the analysis of a wide variety of selected readings. Prerequisites: ENGL 1301 and 1302, or equivalent, with a grade of C or above. II. OVERALL OR GENERAL OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

2 1. Understand the major works of world writers from the Romantic period to the major writers of the 20 th Century 2. Critically read and think about the literature assigned. 3. Interpret and understand major literary works from the Romantic period to the major writers of the 20 th Century 4. Write clear, intelligent literary interpretive essays. III. INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS The instructional materials identified for this course are viewable through 2 IV. COURSE REQUIREMENTS A. General 1. Regular attendance and punctuality 2. Constructive class and team participation 3. Completion of assignments B. Specific 1. Complete regular reading assignments from textbook 2. Write clearly and without errors. 3. Assignments include writing and assessment; documents with clear purpose 4. The instructor may require an oral report. V. EXAMINATIONS A. Every unit includes assignments. B. Writing assignments are the primary assessment tool. C. Assignments may be made up in the event of an excusable absence only. The instructor will determine the time of the make-up on an individual basis. Students must be prepared for class on the

3 day they return, and they will have one week from that date to make-up all missed assignments. Excusable absences are explained in the College catalog. VI. NOTES AND ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FROM COURSE INSTRUCTOR Withdrawal from Course: If a student is unable to continue in this class, it is the student's responsibility to file an Application for withdrawal at the Records office. The student must sign the withdrawal form, and it the case of military tuition assistance students, the Education Services Office must also sign it. Failure to file the withdrawal form will result in Administrative withdrawal with the grade of F. Administrative Withdrawal: Students may be administratively withdrawn from any class when their absences exceed a total of four (4) class meetings for sixteen-week semesters, three (3) class meetings for eleven-week, eight-week, and six-week semesters, and in the opinion of the instructor they cannot satisfactorily complete the course. The final decision rests solely with the instructor.

4 Incomplete Grade: The college catalogue states, "An incomplete grade may be given in those cases where the student has completed the majority of the course work but, because of personal illness, death in the immediate family, or military orders, the student is unable to complete all of the requirements for a course. It is the responsibility of the student to arrange with the instructor to complete the course and change the 'IP' grade within the time specified." Class Participation: Students are to participate constructively in class discussion and attend class regularly and punctually. Exams: Unannounced quizzes covering assigned material may be given -when necessary. A final examinations will be given at the end of the course. For the final exam, a Composition essay with a minimum of 800 words is required. Late policy- In class meetings-my late policy is simple. Student must notify me by . I will only take an assignment within 7 days of a deadline. I do not take more than one late assignment during a term. The late assignment will be penalized 10% up to 7 days late. Then it will not be accepted. All work for a given week is due at the start of each class period. I forgot my work at home and/or can I it to you is not acceptable. You must have hard copy of your work to hand in. Electronic assignments will be taken for Independent studies only. All work must be turned in the week due. If you have a documented emergency, I will need documentation to excuse student penalties up to the allowed period of time as outlined by CTC catalog.
