Downers Grove, IL, COURSE RATIONALE: This course provides future professionals who seek employment in volunteer-based organizations with basic skills and a comprehensive knowledge of management principles inherent in this work, as well as provide insight for students who will volunteer in such organizations. In addition, issues important to professionals in this field of work will be reviewed and students will reflect on their implications on professional practice. COURSE GOALS: Students who meet the goals for this course will: Gain basic knowledge of the history and current trends/ issues in this field. Understand how management principles, psychology, and motivation theory relate to volunteer management. Gain basic skills and knowledge to plan, implement, lead, and evaluate volunteer management systems including knowledge of stakeholder issues. Understand tasks of recruitment, orientation, training, placement, retention, and recognition of volunteers. Able to evaluate existing systems of volunteer management and recommend improvements. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Identify sources for staff/volunteer recruitment, including recruitment for boards and committees. Form strategies for the recruitment, selection, orientation, training, motivation, supervision, evaluation, recognition, and termination of staff/volunteers via the group project. Demonstrate time management and problem solving skills in the conduct of the group project. Explain how to develop a program budget for a volunteer management program and its various components. Explain the nature of public relations activities associated with the volunteer management function. Describe the process used to develop and implement a new volunteer program. 1

2 Describe strategies for facilitating team building among program staff and volunteers. Explain criteria for evaluating program outcomes of volunteer programs. Explain the importance of a working knowledge of nonprofit and employment law and regulations. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Students are expected to read all required assignments listed on the course calendar prior to the class period during which they will be discussed and to actively participate in class discussion of those readings and related issues. Regular class attendance and participation is expected. 1. Volunteer experience (50 points) Students will participate in two brief volunteer experiences at different points during the semester; one of the two experiences has been pre-arranged and is listed on the course schedule. Participation in these experiences carries point value (i.e., 10 points each). Your three to fivepage paper (typed, double-space) should compare and contrast both experiences and summarize your learning from the experience that relates to course content. (Students unable to attend the scheduled event should contact the instructor ASAP; you will be required to make your own alternative arrangements and get instructor approval for their substitution.) 2. Group consulting project (100 points) Students will work in small groups with a selected nonprofit agency to create a consulting report that either reviews/makes recommendations concerning a current volunteer initiative or that creates a plan for a new initiative to be accomplished through the efforts of volunteers. This assignment will mutually benefit the students and the agency. a) 1/4 of this grade will come from two homework assignments: Program Goal Research, and Best Practices. Details will be provided in class. b) 1/4 of this grade will come from the in-class presentation of your final report. The presentation must consist of a brief overview of the project, and in-depth description of the 2 or 3 most interesting and/or challenging components of your project. Each group will have 15 minutes for their presentation. c) 1/2 of this grade will be based on the written report. In addition each member of the team will assess the extent of involvement of all other team members in the final outcome. This team involvement score will be factored into your individual rating for the project. 3. Examinations (100 points 50 each) Two exams (Exam I and Exam II) will be given and will cover all readings, class discussions and projects. Details will be provided in class along with specific dates. 3. Quizzes (50 points) Quizzes will be given periodically during the semester to assess learning. Six (6) ten-point quizzes (Five (5) scored) will be given covering the assigned readings and the previous in-class lecture materials. Dates for quizzes are subject to change. No make-up option is available for these quizzes. 2

3 GRADING SYSTEM Percentage Grade Value 99% and above A % A % A % B % B % B % C % C % D 1.00 Below 60% E 0.00 NOTE: Assignments are considered late if turned in any time after the class period of the assigned due date. Late assignments will, under no circumstances, be accepted for a grade. SCHOOL OF COMMUNITY RESOURCES AND DEVELOPMENT POLICIES AND PROCEDURES 1. Students must meet all course prerequisites listed in the ASU general catalog. Students not possessing these prerequisites will be withdrawn from the course. 2. An instructor may withdraw a student from the course with a mark of "W" or a grade of "E" only in cases of disruptive classroom behavior (ASU General Catalog). 3. During the first four weeks of a semester, a student may withdraw from a course with a mark of "W." From the fifth week to the end of the 10th week of a semester, students may withdraw with a mark of "W" from courses only in which the instructor certifies that they are passing at the time of withdrawal. 4. The faculty in the School of Community Resources and Development assume that academic honesty will serve as the cornerstone of the academic experience. Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. This includes, but is not limited to, cheating, plagiarism, or deception on an exam, paper, or class assignment. Plagiarism is defined as "intentionally or knowingly representing the words and/or ideas of another as one's own in any academic exercise" (Board of Regents Code of Conduct and Academic Dishonesty). Cheating and plagiarism may result in disciplinary action including, but not limited to, a failing grade on the assignment, a failing grade in the class, or suspension/expulsion from the university. Students are responsible for reviewing and complying with all ASU policies: Academic Integrity Policy Student Code of Conduct Computer, Internet and Electronic Communications Policy 5. The instructor of a course has full authority to decide whether or not class attendance is required. During the second week of classes (Fall or Spring), the instructor can drop a student for non-attendance. It is the student's responsibility to contact the instructor before the end of the first week of classes if absences during that period cannot be avoided. 6. Class Attendance and Participation - Students are expected to attend class regularly and participate in all class discussion. Excessive absences will result in lower course grades. If absences are excessive, but medically excused, a student will receive an "I" or "W," depending on the circumstances. Tardiness 3

4 constitutes an absence. 7. Students are asked to show common courtesy to others in order to encourage a positive learning environment for all. Cell phones, pagers, and other electronic devices are to be turned off throughout the duration of the course. There is to be no eating or drinking in the classroom. Please refer to the ASU General Catalog for additional information and the schedule of classes for withdrawal date deadlines.
