COMM 2301 is aimed at assisting you in developing and/or strengthening your proficiency in public speaking. You will work to set and achieve your speaking goals through discussing principles and practices of speaking with different audiences. Because this is a public speaking class, you will practice honing your speaking skills through delivering several speeches. REQUIRED COURSE MATERIALS ü No textbook! Just handouts in class. ü 3X5 notecards, USB flash drive, Blackboard, Angelo State University STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon completing this course, students should be able to: ü Gather, analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information relevant to a question or issue. (CT1) ü Develop and demonstrate a logical position (i.e. perspective, thesis, hypothesis) that acknowledges ambiguities or contradictions. (CT2) ü Develop, interpret, and express ideas through effective written communication. (CS1) ü Develop, interpret, and express ideas through effective oral communication. (CS2) ü Develop, interpret, and express ideas through effective visual communication. (CS3) ü Consider different viewpoints as a member of a team. (TW1) ü Work effectively with others to support and accomplish a shared goal. (TW2) ü Demonstrate the ability to evaluate choices, actions and consequences as related to ethical decisionmaking. (PR1) COURSE EXPECTATIONS Be in class, be on time, and stay for the whole time. Attendance is required seriously. The time that we are scheduled to spend together is important. You are responsible for delivering your speeches and submitting assignments on their due dates in class or on Blackboard (as indicated). Class begins at 8 am. Registering for this class is a commitment to be here each day, on time, and for the whole time. There is really no reason why you should not be here and ready to get started at 8 am. However, if you are late, do not enter the classroom while a classmate is delivering her/his speech. It is your responsibility to sign the attendance sheet. If you do not sign it, you will be considered absent. Be connected. You should be checking your Angelo State University on a daily basis probably multiple times per day. You are responsible for any material posted on Blackboard and/or sent via . Be respectful. In order to provide class members the opportunity to do their best work and to provide a relatively comfortable environment for giving presentations and learning students need to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner at all times. If you arrive late to class or have to excuse yourself from class while someone is speaking, do not enter or exit the room until she or he is finished speaking.

2 Participate. Active involvement in our class is integral to your learning. We will be engaging in activities that will help you progress through the course material and prepare your presentations. Remember that attendance is not the same as participation. You should come to class having read the assigned readings and prepared to discuss and apply the material. Class will be conducted on the assumption that you have completed the reading assignment. Because we will not cover all material in class, you are responsible for learning the assigned material and asking questions about content that you do not understand. Have academic integrity. You are expected to complete your own assignments and to provide appropriate documentation/source citations when using outside resources. If you plagiarize or cheat, you will either receive a zero for the assignment/exam OR fail the entire course. Violations of academic integrity are very serious matters and are clearly documented in the ASU Student Handbook. The work that you submit in this class is expected to be your own work and must be work completed for that particular assignment. Plagiarism is representing words or ideas of another as one's own. This may include your own previous work (i.e., selfplagiarism ). Plagiarism includes quoting or paraphrasing from other sources without acknowledging/citing the source of your information or presenting quoted material as your own words. There is no such thing as unintentional or accidental plagiarism. However, there is careless or reckless plagiarism both of which are still very much plagiarism. You must be clear about attribution of sources and you must know how to cite sources in your papers and presentations. If you have questions, you can contact me or refer to the Concise rules of APA style (6th ed.). Please review the full Honor Code Policy in the Angelo State University Student Handbook at ASSIGNMENTS Handouts with the specifics for each of the assignments will be distributed in class and posted on Blackboard. Several of these assignments have multiple components. I expect that all of your work will be typed in 12 point Times New Roman font with 1-inch margins and adhere to APA format. Self-Introduction Speech or Narrative Speech 50 points The task for your first speech is to paint us a picture of how a particular experience in your life influences your identity (that is, who you are). By doing our self-introduction or narrative speeches this way, we are able to go beyond merely listing things about ourselves. In other words, this approach avoids having to hear a laundry list of likes and dislikes. Paint a picture as to why this particular experience in your life is so important to you and why it has made you the individual you are today. This speech includes an informal outline and notecards. Informative Speech (CS1, CS2) 250 points The primary focus in this speech is to inform or teach us (your audience) about a topic of interest. This can be a topic that you know a lot about, something that you know a few things about but would like to learn more, or it might be a topic that you do not yet know anything about. Regardless of the route you take in choosing your topic and conducting your research, your goal for this speech is to share information clearly, so that your audience receives, understands, and retains it. Includes preparation outline, speaking outline, bibliography, notecards, and visual aid. Persuasive Speech (CT2, CS3) 250 points The primary focus in this speech is to persuade us (your audience). A persuasive speech influences a listener s beliefs, feelings, or behavior. You ll be expected to evaluate your audience, research your speech topic, and present an ethical argument. Choosing a good topic will be paramount for your success in this speech. Includes research assignment, preparation outline, speaking outline, bibliography, notecards, visual aid, and peer critiques. Public Speaking COMM Fall

3 Group Speech (TW1, TW2) 250 points The primary focus of this speech is working with a small group of your classmates to research, prepare, construct, and deliver a group speech. Includes a preparation outline, bibliography, visual aid, notecards, and short paper. Participation 200 points Our course will revolve on active participation. For that reason, it s critical that you participate in what we re doing in class each day. If you do, your speeches will come together in class. If you don t, you ll end up working on your own time. Attendance - Required Attendance is required. You should not plan on missing class. However, things have a way of happening. If you do miss a day, you will lose the points for what we are doing that day. The rest of the attendance policy works like this: three absences lowers your final course grade by one full letter grade ( B becomes C ) and four absences lowers your final course grade by two full letter grades ( B becomes D ). If you miss four or more days of class, then you will receive an F for the entire course. NOTE: Speeches cannot be made up no exceptions. No late work will be accepted. All work is due at the beginning of class or on Blackboard as designated on assignment sheets no exceptions. You must deliver all speeches to pass the course. Total Points A B C D 599 and below F OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION Academic Advising: The College of Arts and Humanities and Department of Communication and Mass Media require that students meet with a Faculty Advisor as soon as they are ready to declare a major. The Faculty Advisor will set up a degree plan, which must be signed by the student, faculty advisor, and the department chair. Grade Appeal Procedures: As stated in Angelo State University Operating Policy and Procedure (OP Student Grade Grievances), a student who believes that he or she has not been held to appropriate academic standards as outlined in the class syllabus, equitable evaluation procedures, or appropriate grading, may appeal the final grade given in the course. The burden of proof is upon the student to demonstrate the appropriateness of the appeal. A student with a complaint about a grade is encouraged to first discuss the matter with the instructor.
