Week!!! 14 Digestion & Excretion; review quiz Anatomy of the Fetal Pig ** Development & Immunity; review quiz Fetal Pig - Mini Practical Note: Some of the laboratories will be using stains and chemicals which can damage clothing, so please dress accordingly to laboratory. Neither UIC nor the Biology Department will assume any responsibility for damaged clothing. Also, there will be a fetal pig dissection during the course. If you have religious or ethical objections to this, please contact Michael Muller as soon as possible. An alternate exercise may be assigned.

3 Grading Exams: Points in BIOS 100 may be earned in the discussion section, laboratory, participation in iclicker exercises in lecture, and from lecture examinations. Each hourly examination is comprised of multiple-choice questions and each is worth a total of 150 points. The final examination is optional - if you choose to take the final, we will drop the lowest exam score. If you do not take the final, all of your exam scores will count. Note that there is no penalty for taking the final examination - if this is your lowest score, we will drop the final examination score. If you miss one of the four hourly examinations, you must take the final examination. So, to be clear, there are NO MAKE- UP EXAMS!!! The final exam is cumulative and will contain all new questions, which could possibly kill me. All in all, you may earn up to 600 points from exams. Students will take each exam twice. Exams will first be taken as usual, in the classroom by the student working along without the aid of any ancillary material. This is known as the Solo Exam and will count for 80% of the 150 points for the student s exam grade. Students will then take the same exam (with the same questions) with their peers in Discussion Section where they may discuss potential answers together. Students may also utilize any other ancillary materials that they chose. This Group Exam will be worth a maximum of 20% of the 150 points possible for each exam. Note that for the forth exam, there will not be time in discussion to have a group exam. I will average your group exam scores from exams 1-3 and give you this score for the Group Exam IV score. There will, however, be a Group Exam for the final given immediately after the Solo Exam. Discussion, Review Quizzes, and Labs: The Discussion hour portion at the beginning of each lab is required and will include two components - a review quiz and a class exercise reviewing some aspects of the lecture material. On weeks when there are group exams, these will be given during discussion and there will be no review quiz or in class exercise. The lecture review quiz will consist of 10 questions relating to the upcoming lab as well as material covered in lecture. There will be 10 lecture review quizzes and the lowest score will be dropped, for a total of 45 points. Additionally, there will be 10 discussion sessions with required in class activities. Your TA will grade you based on participation - each session will be worth 5 points and the scores from the lowest one will be dropped; thus a total of 45 points are possible for the discussions. The discussion topics can be found in the Discussion Topics folder in Blackboard. Laboratory: There are 10 laboratory exercises, each worth 10 points. The lowest laboratory grade will be dropped; thus, there will be a total of 90 points for labs possible. The last week of lab is the fetal pig mini-practical. This is worth 10 points and CANNOT be dropped (10 points). No make-ups for labs will be allowed this is the reason we allow one of the labs to be dropped. Group Project: There is a group project that you and your lab group will present to the class. You and your group will prepare a 25-minute presentation on a topic of your choice and then follow with a Q & A session. This will be worth 50 points. Attendance to the other groups presentations is mandatory as you will be assessing their presentations. If you fail to attend and perform peer evaluations, you will lose 10 points from your project score. Point structure for group presentation: 10 points initial version of a power point file focusing on the research week 7 40 points power point presentation given during weeks 9/10 Mastering Biology: Access to the Mastering Biology will be through a link on Blackboard. If you want to purchase this item separately, you Must purchase access to Mastering through our Blackboard link you cannot purchase the correct version at masteringbiology.com or any other web site! There will be several Mastering Biology exercises to perform. They will be worth 100 points total. Please note that you will be given a score for each Mastering Biology assignment, which will be stored on the Mastering Biology website and not on blackboard. Your Mastering Biology total for the semester will be scaled down to a score out of 100 points at the end of the semester. You can still complete a Mastering Assignment after the due date, but you will only earn 50% of the total points. All Mastering Assignments are due at 11:59 on Thursday, 7 Dec and no further credit can be earned after this date.

4 Clicker: You will also be able to earn points through participation in iclicker exercises. You MUST buy and register your iclicker by the end of week one to receive grades for this. Grades from these exercises will be posted on blackboard. If you forget your iclicker or your iclicker is malfunctioning, you will have to take a zero for that day. There are multiple iclicker drops so missing a couple won t affect your grade very much. If there is a problem with iclicker grading, you have a week after the grades are initially posted to report them to me. After that time is up, there is nothing I can do. You can earn a total of 30 points from clicker exercises Packback Participation: Participation is a requirement for this course, and the Packback Questions platform will be used for online discussion about class topics. Packback Questions is an online curiosity community where you can be fearlessly curious and ask BIG questions about how what we re studying relates to life and the real world. Each week, you should ask at least one question and provide comments and input on two different questions. There will be a Sunday 11:59 PM deadline for Packback submissions each week. You can earn a total of 80 points from Packback Participation In Summary: 600 Exams 100 Labs + Mini Practical 100 Mastering Biology 45 Lecture Review Quizzes 45 Discussion Articles 50 Group Presentation 30 Clicker 80 Packback 1050 Total The final grade will be determined by the following grading scale: A D B E C These point levels are guarantees - for example, if you earn 870 points, you are guaranteed a B. I will never raise the grading scale. Also, please notice that the grades are in points, not percentages. All of your exam grades and laboratory exercise grades will be posted on the UIC Blackboard website ( You are responsible for keeping track of your exam and laboratory grades! Students with disabilities who require accommodations for access or participation in this course must be registered with the Disability Resources Service (DRS) contact: (312) (voice) or (TTY). Academic Dishonesty Policy: Academic dishonesty takes many forms including but not limited to looking on someone else s exam, allowing someone to see your exam, canvassing for a grade change, and using someone else s clicker, plagiarism etc. Cases of academic dishonesty are rewarded with a zero on the work concerned and reported to Student Judiciary (Dean of Students). I have failed people for academic dishonesty and will continue to do so. Lecture Capture: We will be using a new system to capture instructor presentations and make them available to students. These materials must NOT be put up on any other public venue by students (putting them on personal equipment, such as your personal ipod, is fine). Also, please note that sometimes the lecture capture goes down or the microphone battery may die. If that happens, there is nothing we can do about it. Sorry.

5 NOTE: We reserve the right to make changes in this syllabus. Any changes will be announced in lecture or posted on Blackboard. Coming to class will be important for keeping current on if and how the syllabus changes. Other Notes Due to complications that have occurred in the past, I am forced to make the following clarifications In discussion and laboratory, you are frequently working in groups. However, all assignments are individual efforts, not group efforts. We encourage you to discuss your answers before hand, but all work submitted must be your own. If I even suspect lab exercises were copied, all parties involved will receive zero credit. End of discussion All discussion and laboratory assignments must be initialed by your TA before you leave. Assignments submitted without TA initials will receive zero credit. We are not responsible for lost exam scantrons - if your scantron becomes lost, you will not receive a grade for that exam and must take the optional final. If possible, hand your scantron to your TA when you leave. Life is hard and unfair. Blackboard is meant to be a place where you can find out your scores on labs and exams. However, it does not drop the lowest exam or labs, so if you want to know your score, you must do this. See, your math teacher was right, you will need to use this skill every now and then. If you forget your clicker, you will earn a zero for that day. There will be a few dropped clicker scores, so if you do this once or twice, you should not be affected. If you make a habit out of this, though, you are in trouble. There are just too many students to keep track of this. Bringing your iclicker is your responsibility. Our software will accept iclicker 1, iclicker 2, and the Reef Polling App You are ultimately responsible for keeping track of your grades. We are not held responsible for input errors into blackboard. Greater emphasis will be given to any disputes if they are presented in a timely manner. You MUST keep track of your clicker points - if you come up to me at the end of the semester and say that you haven t received any clicker points, you won t. If you are acting suspicious during an exam, a TA or I will move you. If you continue to act suspicious, we will take your exam, you will receive a zero, and you will be reported to the student judiciary council.
