1 NTR 315: Nutrition Through the Life Cycle Fall 2010, Unique #53345, MWF 12-1 Instructor: Lydia Steinman, MA, RD, LD Office: GEA 30C Phone: Office hours: 2:00 3:30 pm on Mondays and Wednesdays, or by appointment Teaching Assistant: Viktoriya Rybalko Office: Pai Office Hours: Tuesdays 9-10:30 am Course Objective Upon completion of this course the student will be able to apply basic nutrition knowledge to evaluate the rationale for nutritional needs throughout the life cycle. Textbook: Brown, J, Nutrition Through the Life Cycle, Wadsworth, 4th Ed. There are a couple of copies of the text on 2-hour reserve in the Life Science Library in the Main Building. Blackboard: Syllabus, lecture slides (pdf format), study objectives, announcements, course documents are available on Blackboard. Online chapter quizzes are posted under Assignments. Grades (exams, quizzes, extra credit) are posted under My Grades. Grading: Final grades are based on 690 total points. 600 points Exams 20 points Class assignment 70 points Online Chapter Quizzes. 2 D- = pts. ( %) F = pts. ( %) No gift points will be given at the end the semester. Students must score the requisite number of points to get an A, B, etc. What you earn is what you get. Exams There will be 3 midterm exams (50 multiple-choice questions) and one final exam (100 multiple-choice questions), each worth 200 points. Your 3 best exam scores will be used to calculate a total exam grade. The Final Exam is optional if you have taken all three midterm exams and are satisfied with your grades. The final exam will be comprehensive. No make-up exams will be given, unless you have a valid written excuse from a physician. Prior arrangements can be made with the Teaching Assistant to take the exam early. - In the event that you miss a midterm exam, you will be required to take the comprehensive final exam. - If you miss more than 1 exam, you will receive zero points for the 2 nd missed exam. Examination policies While exams are in progress, all books, notebooks, papers, jackets, and personal effects must be placed as designated by the instructor. Nonprogrammable calculators may be used for examinations. Students may not share calculators. No cellular phones will be allowed during exams. The instructor will provide scantrons for all exams. Only examination hard copy, scantron, calculator (no cellular phones), and pencils may be on a student's desk while the examination is in progress. Baseball caps must be turned around with the bill facing backward and hats must be removed during examination. Exam hard copies will not be returned to students, but will be available for review during instructor s / teaching assistant s office hours. Students will not be allowed to write down questions while reviewing the exams. Quizzes Students are required to complete 14 online chapter quizzes (posted on Blackboard under Assignments). Each quiz will count 5 points for a total of 70 points. Quiz grades are uploaded automatically on Blackboard after completion of the quiz. Quizzes may be taken multiple times as long as they are completed on exam by 5pm (see class schedule). The grade from last attempted quiz is the one recorded on the official grade sheet in Blackboard. If you do not take a quiz (or quizzes) by the due date (see class schedule), you will NOT be able to make up the quizzes. No excuses

3 Class Assignment Students are required to complete the following class assignment for a total of 20 points: - Food Safety during Pregnancy (video + question set) This assignment is due on the date specified by the instructor (refer to course schedule). Late policy for assignment: minus 20% per day late. No exceptions. No make-ups for this assignment will be allowed unless you have a written excuse from a physician or you have made prior arrangements with the instructor or teaching assistant. Extra Credit: Students will be able to earn up to 8 extra credit points during the semester: Class participation Our class will participate in a food drive conducted by the Community Nutrition class. Date to be announced. Each student will be awarded 2 points for donating one canned food item (may be purchased at school). Additional food items can be donated, but only 2 points will be given. Extra Credit Activities Up to 6 points of extra credit may be earned for completing 2 of the 4 activities listed below: Diet planning during Pregnancy case study with worksheet Overweight Child Case Study with worksheet Marketing to children - For this activity you will watch 2 hours of TV programming that is of interest to children. (Examples are Saturday morning cartoons or Nickelodeon, Hannah Montana, American Idol). You are required to complete a worksheet. Osteoporosis Risk Reduction Case Study with worksheet Late submittals will not be accepted (Refer to class schedule for due dates). Extra credit activities will be graded for accuracy and completeness. You may complete all 4 activities, but will only get credit for your 2 highest scores. Activities are posted on Blackboard / Course Documents / Extra Credit. Communicating with instructor: Due to the large number of students in the class, the instructor is not able to respond to routine s pertaining to information in the syllabus (class policies, grading procedures, and class schedule). The instructor will not answer s concerning exam content. If you have a question about the exam or want advice with study preparation, the instructor will be happy to answer your questions during office hours / scheduled appointment, or immediately before and after class. Questions / s about grading should be directed to the teaching assistant.

4 Academic and Professional Honesty Absolute honesty must be practiced in all assignments and activities. Cheating in its various forms such as copying or sharing information on individually assigned projects or examinations, plagiarism or falsification of information or data will not be tolerated and may be grounds for dismissal from the class. Students are encouraged to become familiar with the University policy on academic honest. Suspected violations of the policy will be reported to the Dean of Students Students with Disabilities The University of Texas at Austin provides upon request appropriate academic accommodations for qualified students with disabilities. Last day an undergraduate student may add a class except for rare and extenuating circumstances. Last day to drop with possible refund.
