45 All organisms have characteristics that allow them to survive in their environment. An adaptation is any inherited characteristic that increases the chance of an organism s surviving and producing offspring that also reproduce. An adaptation may have to do with the way an organism gets its energy or processes materials. An adaptation may relate to the shape or structure of an organism s body. An adaption can even be a form of behavior.

46 When most multicellular organisms reproduce, the offspring are not exact copies of the parents. There are differences. If a particular difference gives an organism an advantage over other members in its group, then that difference is referred to as an adaptation. Over time, the organism and its offspring do better and reproduce more. That trait then becomes more common in the population.

53 What are some seasonal changes that can affect animals? Less food, changing temperatures, different amounts of precipitation (flooding, drought), different amounts of sunlight

54 What does migration mean and how does that help animals to survive? What are some examples? It is the movement of animals to different regions in response to changes in the environment. Helps them to maintain food source.

55 How does hibernation help an animal to survive? This is an example of going dormant. It conserves energy.

56 Explain what seeds and pollen are and why they are adaptations that make it possible for plants to reproduce on land. Seed young plant enclosed in coating. Protects it and it can be moved to different areas. Pollen holds sperm cells. Can be transported to other plants for fertilization.

58 How is the reptile egg an adaptation that allows vertebrates to live on land? Hard shell protects it. There is a membrane that holds in contents and keeps it moist so it doesn t dry out.

59 How are geckos adapted to be able to walk on very smooth surfaces? Its foot is covered with billions of tiny hairs. Each hair branches into smaller hairs called spatulae. The atoms of the spatulae are attracted to the atoms of the surface so they can walk on it and stick to it.
