The maximum course completion time for this course is one year from the date of registration. It is important to schedule your course study to fit into your academic plan. If you have important deadlines to meet such as graduation, be sure to complete and submit all of your assignments and take the final examination at least five weeks before the credit is needed. It is your responsibility to ensure the credits for this course will apply toward graduation or certification deadlines. Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice Hall, ISBN CATALOG DESCRIPTION: An introduction to the basic techniques of algebra. Topics include functions (linear, quadratic, polynomial, root, rational, exponential, and logarithmic), systems of equations, matrix algebra, inequalities, and complex numbers. Optional topics include partial fractions, synthetic division, mathematical induction, sequences and series, and counting principles. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Apply the fundamental concepts of analysis to solve problems: these concepts include the natural, rational, real, and complex number systems; algebra of polynomial, exponential, and logarithmic functions; matrix algebra; and graphing. 2. Think logically and to present material in a logical fashion. 3. Make productive use of technology to solve problems and to gain mathematical insights. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Syllabus Review The first assignment for this class is a Syllabus review. Write up a 1 page summary of the syllabus and the requirements to complete this class successfully and any questions you may have and send this to your instructor. This is worth 5 extra credit points. 3 Homework There are seven homework lessons. Each require assigned exercises to be submitted to the instructor. Homework can be submitted on a per chapter basis through the mail or scanned and ed. If mailed and a response is needed, a self-addressed stamped envelope must be included. All homework must be submitted, even if no response is requested as this is a graded item. Students need not wait for feedback on assignments but should continue to work through the next section of homework in order to keep moving forward in the class. If there is something missing from the previous homework, this can be resubmitted for credit. Examinations There are four exams (each with a 2-hour time limit) and one Final Exam (2-hour time limit). All exams must be proctored and are timed. All exam questions are similar to homework questions. You will not have multiple choice or true/false questions. Partial credit can be earned if you show your work. You will have two hours to complete each exam. You may use one (1) 8/5x11 sheet of paper with notes for each exam as well as a calculator which does not calculate payments, interest, etc. During exams, only a calculator that does not calculate interest, payments, etc. are permitted. NO OTHER ELECTRONICS, including BUT NOT LIMITED to cell phones, ipad, ipod, mp4, etc. are permitted in the testing room. Please Note: Communication concerning this class, both during and afterwards, will be discussed with the student. At no time will I discuss this with anyone other than the student. After the class is completed, the student can order transcripts to be sent/given to any other concerned parties. All written work is subject to plagiarism detection software review. Identified instances of cheating or plagiarism will follow the Academic Integrity statement in the Syllabus. Instructor Response Time: All work received will be graded within 72 hours. If a selfaddressed stamped envelope is enclosed, the work will be returned. If the student has an address on file, the results will be ed. If neither, the work will be recorded and not retained.
