2 Dear Parents, We have had an excellent start to the school year and this Friday we will continue our intentional education through NWEA MAP Testing. Beginning this Friday, students in grades 2-11 will take three installments of the Measures of Academic Progress test in order to benchmark learning and chart growth. Similar to last year, students will have the opportunity to take their NWEA MAP Tests at home. We believe this allows for strong partnership and better insight into your child s patterns of testing, learning and growth. FALL DATES We have established three testing dates over the course of the fall, in which students will be assessed in the areas of Math, Reading and Language Usage. The scheduled dates are: September 1: Math September 8: Reading September 15: Language Usage LOCATION On each of these dates, we will equip and provide the option for your family to facilitate the testing in your own home. In addition, we will also provide a testing environment at the school. If your home is not the best testing environment, or if you would prefer to have your child test at school, please use the link to request one of our testing sessions. We have the ability to test 45 students in each session. Seats will be given on a first-reserved basis. AT-HOME FACILITATION TOOLS In order to allow for testing to happen at home, as well as for a standardization of the experience, you will need to download the NWEA Lockdown Browser for your personal Mac or PC computer. The resource sheets provided in this packet will give you step-by-step directions for downloading, installing and running the Lockdown Browser. (pages 2-3) You will also find a list of directions for how to administer the assessment (page 4) as well as a script that will help you to introduce and provide information for your child. (pages 5-7) Please take an opportunity to install and launch the Lockdown Browser prior to Friday morning and let us know if you have any questions or need help in any way. The best way to reach us is at the school phone number ( ) or through a direct with your questions to eleblanc@lookatlegacy.org (Alpharetta K-5th), mshipman@lookatlegacy.org (Alpharetta 6th-12th), or aculp@lookatlegacy.org (Atlanta). We believe that this is going to be an amazing experience that gives extraordinary insight into not only the results of the assessment, but also the process for each student. Please let us know how we can best support you in order to make your at home testing experience as seamless as possible. Choosing to Follow, LCA Leadership Team 1

6 Student Introduction to MAP Testing You can read the following instructions to students before you administer the MAP assessments as a guide to explain MAP testing concepts. These instructions are generalized to apply to various MAP tests and MAP for Primary Grades (MPG) tests. Warm-up Test: Consider having students complete the sample questions in the test warm-up. On the Join Session page, students click Test Warm-Up. General MAP Testing This is not a timed test, and you will have enough time to read and answer all the questions. Give this test your best effort. Some questions will be easy, and others will be more difficult. You cannot get all the answers correct, but that is okay. If you really do not know the answer to a question, try to eliminate some answer choices, and then choose the best answer out of the remaining options. You do need to answer all questions. Some important things to remember as you are taking the test are: n n n After you sign in, please raise your hand if your computer screen does not show your name. Before you click the Next button, you may change your mind about an answer and click on as many answers to a question as you like. But, once you click Next or press the Enter key, you are finished with that question. Your answer is locked into the system, and you cannot change it or go back to a question you have already answered. If you come across a question that appears to be missing answers, questions, or instructions, raise your hand for help. Mathematics Testing On some (but not all) test questions, a calculator appears in the upper right corner of the question. If the onscreen calculator appears with a test question, click on it to use it. If you are unsure about a word in a question, raise your hand for help. I can pronounce the word for you, but I cannot tell you what the word means or explain any math symbols. Reading and Language Usage Testing If a reading passage is too long to fit on the screen, use the scroll bar on the right side of the passage to scroll down and display the rest of the passage and questions about it. Sometimes the same passage is repeated with a different question, so do not skip the question because the passage is the same. Please call the school with any questions that may arise during the assessment Northwest Evaluation Association Measures of Academic Progress, MAP, and DesCartes: A Continuum of Learning are registered trademarks of NWEA in the United States or other countries. 7 Student Directions for the Mathematics Test Look at your computer screen. Check to be sure that it has your name. If it does not, please raise your hand now. Today you will be taking a test called Measures of Academic Progress, also called a MAP test, which is designed to show your mathematics knowledge. Give this test your best effort. This test has approximately 52 questions. Use all of your knowledge and best test-taking skills to complete the test. You will have enough time to read and answer all the questions. Some questions will be easy; others will be more difficult. Be sure to read the directions to each item first, then the problem, and finally, read all of the answer choices. If you really do not know the answer to a question, use your best test-taking skills to eliminate some answer choices. Then choose the best answer of the choices that remain. You cannot skip questions. There are different ways to choose your answer for each question. The best option for most students is to use the mouse to click anywhere on the answer. If this is difficult for you to do, raise your hand and a proctor/teacher will show you another way to select your answers. There are two ways to move on to the next question. The best option for most students is to use the mouse to click Go On. The other option is to press the Enter key on the keyboard. You may click on as many answers to a question as you like, but once you click Go On or press the Enter key, you are finished with that question. Your answer is locked into the system, and you cannot change it. You also cannot go back to a previous question. Since you will be taking the Mathematics test today, I want to tell you about some tools that will assist you. Next to your computer are paper and a pencil. You can use them to solve problems. For some questions, a calculator will appear on the screen. You may use the calculator, but you are not required to do so. If you need to move the calculator, raise your hand and a proctor/teacher will show you how. If you want to remove it from the screen, click the Hide Calculator button at the bottom of the screen. The calculator will not always be there. It will not be there if you re not allowed to use it. If you are unsure about a word in a mathematics question, raise your hand and a proctor/teacher will pronounce the word for you. We cannot tell you what the word means, and we cannot explain any symbols. This probably will not ever happen, but should you come across a question that appears to be missing answers, questions, or instructions, raise your hand so we can help you. The test will take approximately 50 minutes to complete; however, it is not timed, and you will be given time to finish. When you come to the end of the test, your score will be displayed on the screen. It is very important that you do not press Enter or click any buttons. Please cover your screen by flipping down the paper on the top of your computer and read your book silently. An adult will come over and set your station for the next student to use while others are finishing. Please call the school with any questions that may arise during the assessment. If you have any concerns once the test has started, raise your hand and a proctor/teacher will come to you. We are not allowed to provide you with any additional information during the test other than pronouncing a word in a question for you. I can now reread any part of the instructions if you have questions. Are there any questions? You may begin by clicking the Start Test button. 6
8 Student Directions for the Reading or Language Usage Test Look at your computer screen. Check to be sure that it has your name. If it does not, please raise your hand now. Today you will be taking a test called Measures of Academic Progress, also called a MAP test, which is designed to show your reading or language usage knowledge. Give this test your best effort. This test has approximately 52 questions for Language Usage and approximately 42 questions for Reading. Then choose the best answer of the ones that remain. You cannot skip questions. Your answer is locked into the system, and you cannot change it. You also cannot go back to a previous question. Sometimes, a reading passage may be too long to fit on the screen at the same time. If that is the case, be sure to use the scroll bar on the right-hand side of the screen to scroll down so that the whole passage and the matching question are displayed. Sometimes you may see the same passage repeated with different questions. This is okay. This probably will not ever happen, but should you come across a question that appears to be missing answers, questions, or instructions, raise your hand so we can help you. The test will take approximately 50 minutes to complete; however, it is not timed, and you will be given time to finish.
