We will review the structure and function of the major organ systems of the human body in health and disease, highlighting the role of behavior in health maintenance and disease prevention. The course is geared toward students preparing for a career in the health professions, but will be interesting to anyone who would like to learn more about how their body works, how disease develops, and what can be done to stay healthy. Course Objectives/Student Learning Outcomes: At the end of the course the student will be able to: Identify, define, describe and explain the basic anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of the dermatological, musculoskeletal, neurological, endocrine, hematological, cardiovascular, pulmonary, immunological, gastrointestinal, urinary and reproductive systems of the human body Describe and explain the behavioral approaches to health promotion and disease prevention Understand and use medical terminology Course Structure: Lectures: will cover the assigned chapters, and may include more detailed material not covered in the textbook. Students are responsible for all topics and issues discussed in the lectures, even if they are not covered in the textbook, and they will be on the homework assignments and exams. Lecture slides, in pdf format, will be posted on Blackboard (BB) under the content tab, by midnight Friday, for lectures covered the following week, and removed from BB midnight the following Sunday. Readings: Students are required to complete the assigned chapter readings and their corresponding lecture slides before coming to class so they can participate in a meaningful discussion about the topic covered that day, and answer the questions posed during lecture.

In-Class Participation: 0% Students will be graded for their active participation in the class discussions, and for how well they are prepared to answer the questions raised during the lecture. Starting from the second class session, students will be called upon randomly to answer questions raised during the lecture, and to discuss the pathophysiology of the diseases covered in the chapter readings; therefore, it is strongly recommended that students read the assigned chapter(s) and their corresponding PowerPoint lecture before coming to class, to be prepared for the in-class discussion and questions posed. Students can supplement their knowledge of the pathophysiology of diseases from other more detailed sources, if need be, to help them answer the questions posed in class and to participate actively in the class discussions. Not all students will be called upon each lecture, however, if a student is not present in class when his/her name is called, their partial participation grade for that session will be set to 0. For preventative measures, if you are sick, especially with an infectious respiratory illness, please do not come to class, and make sure to ME AND THE TA AT LEAST 24 HOURS BEFORE THE CLASS SESSION, so as not to get penalized for not participating in the class discussion. Grading rubric for in-class participation: Student present, prepared for the topic of the day, answers questions correctly 3 Student present, prepared for the topic of the day, answers questions partially correct 2 Student present, is NOT prepared for the topic of the day, answers questions incorrectly, or does NOT answer question Student absent from class 0 Online Homework Assignments: 20% There are ten (0) online homework assignments worth 20% of the total grade. Homework assignments will be visible/accessible on Blackboard, under the Assignments tab, at 8 pm the evening the last chapter on the homework assignment has been covered in class, and will remain visible/accessible until 3 pm on the due date as listed in the class calendar (except for the last group of homework assignments, which are due by 2 pm on the final exam day). Once the homework is taken off the site, it CANNOT be accessed again, therefore, make sure you do the homework in the allotted time. MANUAL SUBMISSION OF HOMEWORK ASIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. The purpose of the online homework assignments is to prepare you for the in-class exams, therefore, it is set up so that you can retake each homework twice, however, your final score for each homework assignment will be the AVERAGE score of both attempts. 2

3 MIDTERM EXAMS: 3 in-class Midterms worth 45% (5% each), and a final exam worth 25% of your total grade. Midterms will have 60 questions, and the final exam will have 50 questions Exams are scheduled on the following dates. ATTENDANCE ON ALL EXAMS IS MANDATORY Absence from any of the exams will be considered ONLY if there is a documented emergent reason for the absence, such as a doctor's note for serious illness or a death in the immediate family. THE FINAL EXAM CANNOT BE RESCHEDULED OR TAKEN EARLY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. If you are unable to attend the final exam because you are hospitalized and show appropriate medical documentation, you will get an INCOMPLETE for the course.
