1 Honors Biology Unit 7 Animal Project Introduction In this unit we are conducting a survey of the animal kingdom. This project focuses on the evolution of animal body systems. By comparing the same system in different phyla we can examine some additional evidence suggested for the theories of evolution. Skeletal System Muscular System Respiratory System Circulatory System Digestive System Nervous System Excretory System Objectives For the assigned body system, you will Part I - research how the system has developed through each of the different taxa. Part II - summarize your research in a Powerpoint presentation. Part III - teach the class how the system has changed over time. Part IV - create a quiz as an assessment. Work Days Media Center Media Center Media Center

2 Part I - Research the development of your assigned system As a team, determine what job(s) your system does and trace the development of the system through each of the taxa listed below. Some of the first animals may not have a complete system as we think of it, but every taxa below does perform the functions of each system. As you start collecting information, choose a specific animal to represent each group and search for information about that animal. Include a picture of the animal along with its scientific name (genus & species). Classroom textbooks are valuable references. 1. Phylum Porifera 2. Phylum Mollusca: Class Bivalvia 3. Phylum Annelida: Class Oligochaeta 4. Phylum Arthropoda: Class Arachnid 5. Phylum Arthropoda: Class Insecta 6. Phylum Echinodermata: Class Asteroidea 7. Phylum Chordata: Subphylum Urochordata 8. Phylum Chordata: Subphylum Vertebrata: Class Chondrichthyes 9. Phylum Chordata: Subphylum Vertebrata: Class Amphibia 10. Phylum Chordata: Subphylum Vertebrata: Class Reptilia 11. Phylum Chordata: Subphylum Vertebrata: Class Aves: Order Falconiformes 12. Phylum Chordata: Subphylum Vertebrata: Class Mammalia: Order Cetacea Part II Powerpoint presentaion Using your research, prepare a Powerpoint presentation IN YOUR OWN WORDS demonstrating how your system does its job in each of the selected animals. The number of slides should be determined by the amount of information you have. You will not be graded on the number of slides, but rather on how the information is organized on the slides. Tips to remember when making your slides are: **Follow the 6 X 6 rule 6 lines/6 words per line. **Do not use more than 60% of your slide. **Use an easy to read font, font size and font color. **Use graphics to focus attention. **Use single column format. **Avoid using red and green. (Colorblind individuals cannot distinguish the two.) **Use brighter colors for the most important information. **Use color to link related information. **Check spelling and grammar. **Know the information on your slides.

3 Powerpoint presentation requirements a. Title slide b. Explanation of job(s) of system c. Explanation of the progression of the system, from the simplest to more complex animals d. System diagram- see table below for specific system required information e. Definitions of any applicable terms f. Picture and scientific name for each representative animal (12) g. Cladogram with derived characteristics to show relatedness - refer to page 453 in text h. At least one example of how your system works with another system i. Resources/references slide Teaching the class dates System Teaching Date Specific diagram that must be included Skeletal Compare types of skeletons Muscle How movement is achieved Respiratory Gas exchange structures Circulatory Open and closed systems, types of hearts Digestive Pathway of food and digestive organs functions Nervous Excretory Reception and response to stimuli Method of waste elimination Part III Student Note Packet and Teaching the Class Make notes for the class to help them grasp the material. The notes should not just be a printout of the slides. Think about what kind of notes would be helpful to you, (i.e. partial outline). Your notes should be copied and handed out prior to your lesson. If you are unable to make copies, I will need a week notice to duplicate any note packets. Using your Powerpoint presentation, your team will teach the class what you learned about your system. You are responsible for: a. Making sure you have a working electronic copy of your presentation. b. Being prepared to teach a minute lesson on your assigned day. c. NOT reading directly from the slides, but facing your audience. d. Talking loud enough so everyone can hear you. e. Maintaining the attention of the class. f. Presenting material in an interesting and organized manner

4 Part IV Class quiz On the day following your lesson, you will give a 10 point quiz as a way of assessing the class. You are responsible for: a. Providing sufficient copies of the quiz. If you are unable to make copies, I will need a week notice to duplicate the quiz. b. Grading the quiz. Quiz grades will be part of your 2 nd semester grade.
