1 IE 361 Statistical Quality Assurance Syllabus, Fall 2017 Course Catalog Description I E 361. Statistical Quality Assurance.(Cross-listed with STAT). (2-2) Cr. 3. F.S. Prereq: STAT 231, STAT 301, STAT 326 or STAT 401. Statistical methods for process improvement. Simple quality assurance principles and tools. Measurement system precision and accuracy assessment. Control charts. Process capability assessment. Experimental design and analysis for process improvement. Significant external project in process improvement. Nonmajor graduate credit. Prerequisite Stat 231 or Stat 401 (This is a real prerequisite! If you have not had one of these or a genuinely equivalent course that you have taken seriously, you are NOT prepared for IE 361. You will form teams of 4 members each. 4 Phase 1 Preparation You will complete the specified readings and watch all the video modules assigned for the week, prior to that week s class. See website for details. Phase 2 Readiness Assurance Test At the first class meeting of each lab, you will be given a Readiness Assurance Test (RAT). The RAT test (up to 10 multiple-choice questions) measures your comprehension of the assigned readings, and helps you learn the material needed to begin the lab assignments in phase 3. Once the test period is over, the instructor gives a short mini-lecture to clarify concepts that are not well understood as evidenced by the individual test scores. The purpose of phase 2 is to ensure that you and your teammates have sufficient foundational knowledge to begin learning how to apply and use the course concepts in phase 3. RATs are closed book and based on the assigned readings and videos. Individual RAT (irat) You individually complete a multiple-choice test based on the readings. Team RAT (trat) - Following the irat, the same multiple-choice test is retaken with your team. These tests use a scratch and win type answer cards known as an IF-AT. You negotiate with your teammates, and then scratch off the opaque coating hoping to reveal a star that indicates a correct answer. Your team is awarded 4 points if you uncover the correct answer on the first scratch, 2 points for second scratch, and 1 point for third scratch. Appeals Process - Once your team has completed the team test, your team has the opportunity to file an appeal (see policies section for details). The purpose of the appeals process is to allow your team to identify questions where you disagree with the question key or question wording or ambiguous information in the readings. Instructors will review the appeals outside of class time and report the outcome of your team appeal at the next class meeting. Only teams are allowed to appeal questions (no individual appeals). Feedback and Mini-lecture - Following the RATs and Appeal Process, the instructor provides a short clarifying lecture on any difficult or troublesome concepts. Phase 3 - In-Class Labs You and your team use the foundational knowledge, acquired in the first two phases, to conduct the lab assignments. Lab assignments will be made and partly carried out during weekly meetings, and will be due as announced in class and on the web. You may be asked to publically report intermediate results subject to cross-team discussion/critique. Course Requirements and Policies Lab Assignments Lab assignments will be made and partly carried out during weekly meetings (Tuesdays, 3:40-5:30pm), and will be due as announced in class and on the web. In general, late lab assignments will not be accepted; if there are extenuating circumstances which are explained in advance, your instructor may agree to check through a late homework assignment, but will not grade it. 4 of 7

5 Exams Two midterm exams and a comprehensive final exam will be given during the semester. These are all open-book tests; you will need your textbook and a calculator, and may also use your course notes, slides, and labs. However, you may not share resources textbooks, calculators, et cetera during tests; you must bring your own. Any appeals on grading (points) must be in writing in a separate document. Turn in appeal document and test to be re-graded within one week of the exams being returned. Project As part of the course requirement, you will need to carry out a process-oriented quality improvement project with a (real) client of your own choosing and recruiting. This will involve a preliminary proposal to be approved by the instructor, active consulting with the client, a final report, and presentations to be held in class and during an evening session late in the semester. More details will be provided separately in the Project Guide. Team Maintenance Each individual will rate the contributions all of the other members of their teams before the final exam. As team maintenance is such an important part of success in this class, the peer evaluation will be extensive. The peer evaluation will consider the contribution to the team effort in all activities (trat, Application exercises, and projects). Students will fill out one peer evaluation sheet per person. Students only evaluate members of their team. This is a required activity. Students will be judged on how professional, thoughtful, substantive, and constructive your comments are for all their team members. Failure to submit a peer evaluation of your teammates may result in you not receiving a peer evaluation grade. Peer Evaluations scores will be shared only in aggregate. Grade Appeals: Readiness Assurance Test (RAT) Appeal of the grading of RATs must be done in writing. is acceptable. The heading of the appeal must be in the following format: From: To: Team Name and individual names (Example: Professor s name) Date: (Example: 9/27/2013) Subject:(Example: Exam 1-9/20/2013) Content of the memo depends on the nature of the appeal. If you find the question ambiguous, then Declare ambiguity in question Describe source of ambiguity Provide alternative wording If you disagree with the answer: State reason for disagreement Provide specific references to notes or lectures Appeals must be submitted within 48 hours 5 of 7

6 Team submits appeal Only teams who appeal receive credit Grade Appeals: Exam Appeal of the grading of exams or quizzes must be done neatly word processed or typed. ed appeals are not acceptable. The heading of the appeal must be in the following format (Note: Any memo without this complete information will be returned without action): From: Name To: (Example: Professor s name) Date: (Example: 9/27/2013) Subject:(Example: Exam 1-9/20/2013) Description of the appeal, including the problem or question number, if appropriate, must be composed in a concise, business-like memorandum. In addition, you are to solve the problem(s)/question(s) being appealed in the way that it was solved on the original exam or quiz and briefly explain why you made your original decision (this explanation is required to consider the appeal). Memos should be provided along with the original document that contains the appealed problem(s)/question(s). Memos must be delivered to instructor within one week of the exam being returned in order to be considered for re-grading. Only people who appeal receive credit Contribution of Course to Meeting the ABET Professional Component Students will learn the key basic concepts and methods of quality assurance, and how to apply these concepts and methods in identifying, formulating, and solving problems that are relevant to production and/or service systems. Students will learn the quantitative and analytical techniques typically used in the solving problems associated with quality assurance. Also, students will gain team project experience in quality improvement, in collaboration with area manufacturing and service companies. 3 credits of engineering topics. Prerequisite Policy It is the policy of the IMSE Department to require all students enrolled in this course to have satisfied all of the course s prerequisite requirements. If it is discovered that a student has not met any applicable prerequisite requirements, he/she will be required to immediately drop the course. The failure to drop the course will result in a final course grade of F, regardless of course performance. Students who discover they have improperly enrolled in a course without meeting the applicable prerequisite requirements are strongly encouraged to meet with advising staff to promptly drop the course and make alternative scheduling arrangements or discuss if an official waiver of the pre-requisite requirements may be applicable. Academic Honesty Statement The IMSE Department has an expectation that all students will be honest in their actions and communications. Academic Misconduct in any form is in violation of Iowa State University Student Disciplinary Regulations and 6 of 7

7 will not be tolerated. This includes, but is not limited to: copying or sharing answers on tests or assignments, plagiarism, and having someone else do your academic work. Individuals suspected of committing academic dishonesty will be directed to the Dean of Students Office as per University policy.
