1 THE EFFECT OF STRIP STORY ON STUDENTS WRITING ACHIEVEMENT AT ELEVENTH GRADERS OF MA NW SAMBELIA IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2013/2014 FIKRI, ZAENUL Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Gunung Rinjani, Selong,Lombok Timur Abstrak Penelitian ini dirancang untuk menyelidiki "pengaruh cerita Strip terhadap prestasi menulis siswa di kelas XI MA NW Sambelia pada tahun ajaran 2013/2014. Analisis ini dimaksudkan untuk mengetahui apakah atau tidak kisah strip efektif untuk mengajar siswa dalam menulis prestasi di kelas XI MA NW Sambelia pada tahun ajaran 2013/2014. Untuk menjawab pertanyaan penelitian, peneliti ini dirancang penelitian dengan menggunakan penelitian eksperimental. Peneliti ini mengambil semua kelas XI MA NW Sembelia sebagai penduduk dan mengambil kelas X1 1 sebagai kelompok eksperimen dan kelas XI 2 sebagai kelompok kontrol dari penelitian ini dengan menggunakan teknik total sampling. Untuk mengumpulkan data, peneliti ini disajikan tes esai sebagai instrumen penelitian ini. Untuk menganalisa data, peneliti ini diterapkan statistik deskriptif dan uji t. Hasil penelitian telah mengungkapkan bahwa skor rata-rata kelompok eksperimen dalam tes pra adalah 9,53 dan uji pasca adalah 11,35, sedangkan nilai rata-rata dari kelompok kontrol dalam tes pra adalah 9,3 dan tes pasca adalah 10,1. dalam pengujian hipotesis, peneliti ini digunakan t rumus uji. Peneliti ini menemukan bahwa tes t adalah 11.2 dan t tabel di peringkat signifikan 0,05 adalah 2,004 (11,2> 2,004). Ini berarti bahwa hipotesis alternatif diterima. Jadi, dapat disimpulkan bahwa cerita strip efektif untuk mengajarkan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis untuk siswa kelas XI MA NW Sembelia di tahun ajaran 2013/2014 dari. Hal itu membuktikan bahwa siswa yang diajarkan dengan menggunakan cerita Strip mendapat skor yang lebih tinggi daripada siswa yang diajar tanpa menggunakan cerita Strip. Kata kunci: Jalur Story, Menulis prestasi Abstract This study is designed to investigate the effect of strip story toward students writing achievement at eleventh graders of MA NW Sambelia in the school year 2013/2014. The analysis is meant to know whether or not the strip story is effective to teach students in writing achievement at eleventh graders of MA NW Sambelia in the school year 2013/2014. To answer the research questions, the present researcher designed the research by using an experimental research. The present researcher took all the eleventh grade of MA NW Sembelia as the population and took class X1 1 as an experimental group and class XI 2 as a control group of this study by using Total sampling technique. To collect the data, the present researcher presented essay test as the instrument of this study. In order to analyze the data, the present researcher applied descriptive statistics and t- test. The result of the study has revealed that the mean score of experimental group in pre- test was 9.53 and post- test was 11.35, while the mean score of control group in pre- test was 9.3 and the post- test was in testing the hypothesis, the present researcher used t- test formula. The present researcher found that the t- test was 11.2 and t- table in significant rank 0.05 was (11.2> 2.004). It means that the alternative hypothesis was accepted. So, it can be concluded that strip story is effective to teach students ability in writing for the eleventh graders of MA NW Sembelia in the school year of 2013/2014. It was proved 78
2 that the students who were taught by using strip story got higher score than the students who were taught without using strip story. Keywords : Strip Story, Writing achievement INTRODUCTION English is one of the international languages that are used by many people in the world and in many areas of everyday life. Therefore, using English is the easiest way to communicate with people from other countries in many aspects of human life such as technology, economy, social, and politics. For Indonesian people, English is a foreign language. They use it to understand their world through listening and reading and to communicate their feeling, need, and desires through writing and speaking. By having more knowledge about language skills they have much better chance to understand and get what they want. Writing is one of the four language skills. It is very important in teaching and learning English. Writing involves some language components: spelling, grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation. This is in line with what is stated by Braine and Claire May (1996 : 60) that writing clear paragraphs requires us to learn the rules of English grammar and mechanics such as the correct use of verbs and pronouns, as well as commas and other punctuation marks. Based on a survey which was done by the research at MA NW Sambelia especially at the eleventh graders, the research finds that the students ability is poor. They cannot make good sentences, they do not understand the Grammar, and they cannot sit quietly and pay full attention during the lesson without doing anything. Because of those phenomena, the researcher was interested in investigating the effect of Strip story on Students writing achievement at the eleventh graders of MA NW Sambelia in the school year 201 3/ The students are hoped to describe how something is accomplished through a sequence of actions or steps. Therefore, it will be better if they can practice to write the procedure text, for example how to make something. The students at the eleventh grade of MA NW Sambelia have difficulties in writing procedure text because sometimes the teacher only explains the social function, generic structure and the lexicagrammatical function of procedure text. The students have difficulties when they must write a procedure text based on their imagination and experiences only. Concerning those phenomena it is important that the English teacher needs to improve the ability of the eleventh grade students of MA NW Sambelia by applying a new media for teaching writing. Arsyad ( 1996: ) gives the definition of media as the features of communication and Media should be able to be manipulated. The researcher proposed that teaching media functions to accommodate students who are weak and slow in accepting and understanding the content of subject that s served through text or verbally. One of the media that can be used to teach procedure text is Strip story because Strip story is simple media with some picture and essay to understand for make a paragraph. Through Strip Story, students tell short story or describes events in chronological order with relationship of one story to other story. It is effective media that can improve students writing skill, because the media can stimulate students mind to think chronologically. By applying this media, students also learn to make paragraph by using good grammar and structure, and they do not waste valuable time for getting started in their writing. The researcher thinks that it will be better and more effective if strip story can be applied to teach procedure text at MA NW Sambelia especially with students of eleventh grade because most of them usually are serious study English. In reference to the explanations above and the strong desire of finding 79
3 the solution of these problems, the researcher is motivated to do the research to find out of the effect of strip story on students writing achievement at eleventh graders of MA NW Sambelia in the school year of 2013/2014. The result of this study is expected to be useful theoretical and practical significance in reference to English language education in Indonesia. Theoretically the result of this study is expected to help teachers/researchers to find out the alternative way of teaching writing, especially writing paragraph and to produce the relevant and valid knowledge for their teaching. Practically, The results of the study are expected to give some benefits for the students, teacher, and further researcher. For the students, the result of this study may guide, help, and encourage students to express their ideas, opinion, and thought into paper especially in writing achievement.for the teachers, the result of this study give information for the English teacher, especially for the teachers at MA NW Sambelia in the school year of 2013/2014, that using strip story is more effective to be used to teach writing achievement. For further researcher, the results of this study are expected to be used as an additional reference in carrying out further research. unchosen lottery used as a control group. In collecting data of this study, the instrument was used to collect the data in the form of writing paragraph. Besides, in collecting the data, the researcher took the data from pre and posttest for both experimental group and control group. Pre-test was given to the both groups before teaching and learning process. Meanwhile, post-test will be given after applying the strip story in teaching and learning process to the experimental group and the control group. In the technique of data analysis, the researcher presents about descriptive analysis and hypothesis testing. Before testing hypothesis, the descriptive analysis of the data was conducted such as Mean, Median, Mode and Range. Finally, the researcher computed the two mean scores. It meant to know whether the Ho accepted or not. This study applied the formula recommended by Arikunto (2002: 78).The formula was as follow: t= METHODS The design employed in this study was an experimental research. It means that the researcher attempted to investigate and analyze the data after giving the treatment to the subject. The study was conducted at the eleventh graders of MA NW Sambelia in the school year of 2013/2014. The number of population of this study was 56 students. They were divided into two classes, which consisted of class XI 1 and XI 2. The sample of this study was divided into two classes: XI 1 and XI 2. In choosing experimental and control groups, the present researcher used total sampling technique by used lottery. Both groups names was written on the small paper and put into a glass. The chosen lottery was used as experimental group and it was treated by using strip story and the FINDING AND DISCUSSION Descriptive Statistics The finding is intended to answer the research problem. In this case, the analysis of the data is intended to determine the effect of using Strip Story in writing. Firstly, the researcher came to simple class and gave a pre-test to explore the students sample writing ability. The simple writing test was given. Some of the students understood to the topics discussed but some other seemed so strange and even confused when the researcher attemped to get or to examine their previous knowledge about How to make something. Secondly, after pre-test 80
4 was administrated, the writer held out a regular treatment to the research sample. In the pre-test The experimental group got the highest and the lowest scores were 11 and 7, with the total mean M = 9.5 and standard deviation was 1.08, While on the post-test, the highest and the lowest scores were 14 and 10 with the total means M = and standard deviation was 1.36, Then, for the control Group Experimental pre- test Experimental post- test Control pre-test Control post-test Hypothesis testing Based on the computation of t-test value, the result of t-test value was 11.2 This value was consulted to the value of ttable at the degree of freedom (df) = 56 on the significant level=0, 05. In spite of the degree of freedom (df) could not be found in the table. So, the researcher took the nearest to the certain degree of freedom as Arikunto suggested. After consulting the t-table, the present researcher considered the statement; if ttest (tt) > t- table (t0) in significant rank of 0.05, H0 (Null Hypothesis) is accepted while if t- test (tt) < t- table (t0) in significant rank of 0.05, H0 (Null Hypothesis) is rejected. It was proved that the value of t-test (11.2) > t-table (2.004). It means that the t-test value was higher than the ttable value, and it indicates that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) stated in the previous chapter was accepted, while the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. DISCUSSION Based on the analysis in the control group and experimental group it can be concluded that use of teaching media has influence toward the effect of students writing achievement: the students group who use the strip story media (experimental group) better result than the students group without strip story media. group in pre-test, the highest and the lowest scores were 12 and 6 with the total mean M = 9.96 and standard deviation was 0.08, and in the post-test the highest and the lowest scores were 12 and 8 with the total mean M = and standard deviation was Then the calculation of mean score, standard deviation, the lowest and the highest score can be seen in the following table. N Mean Min Max Score Score Based on the result, it indicated that strip story was effective to teach students in writing procedure text because it is easier for the students to write it when they see the strip story as Arsyad (2002: 123) stated that sequence of pictures are used in strip story and film strip, wall poster over had transparence prompt and by the teacher in prompt car for guided composition or proved car for guiding dialogue reproduction often the essential movement is the change. The picture of strip story on film strip shows one of the ways of helping the viewer to connect the foamed that he already notices the gapes. Strip story had a significant effect in teaching writing achievement. It could be seen from the obtained data that the mean scores of experimental group in pre and post-test were 9.53 and Meanwhile, the mean scores of the control group in pre and post-test were 9.96 and It indicated that the students of experimental group got a higher score than the students of control group. Since the materials of the test have been presented to the two groups by the same researcher at the same length of time, the instructional activity was only distinguished by the media applied. In this case, the experimental group was treated by using strip story, while the control group was taught 81
5 without using strip story (direct writing). Tentatively, it could be said that the treatment given by the present researcher to the experimental group was successful. Furthermore the result of the hypothesis testing indicated that there is the effect of strip story on students writing achievement at eleventh graders of MA NW Sambelia in the school years 2013/2014. It could be proved from the computation of t- test value. In this case, it shows that the t- test is higher than ttable. It means that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected, while the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Hypothesis proposed could be very useful. The result of the test was higher when the students will use strip story media compared to the students who did not use any media. It can be concluded that writing by using strip story media will get the higher mean score if compared to those who did not use strip story media. CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS Through this particular research, it can be concluded that using Strip Story as media in teaching writing has positive effect in helping the students expressed and focus deeply in writing skill. The students are more active and interest in writing procedure text. It can be observed from the result that the students achieved in English writing is better than those who do not use media. The result of analyzing and computing the data shows that the mean scores of experimental group is higher than the mean scores of control group. The experimental group who used Strip story media has better result than the students in the control group. The average of all the topics, control group got the mean score of Post test 10.1 while the experimental group got mean score of Post test So in the all topics, experimental got higher means score than the control group. After calculating and comparing the result between t-test value 7.64 and t- table value at the degree of freedom (df) =56 on significant level of 0, 05, it showed that they were different. Strip story is effective to teach students in writing achievement at eleventh graders of MA NW Sambelia. On the other words, strip story is effective in teaching writing achievement.
