Course Description Introduction to the field of finance, including principles, techniques and uses of finance as a business function. Study of financial analysis, planning and decision-making. Focuses on the firm's balance of financial risk and return. Course Objective To develop a sound knowledge of the essentials of corporate financial management. Upon completion of the course, you should have acquired an understanding of cash flow analysis and the ability of using financial calculator. Required Text Ross, Westerfield and Jordan, Essentials of Corporate Finance. 9th Ed. Boston: McGraw-Hill Irwin, (ISBN10: ) Required Calculator: Texas Instruments BA II Plus 1 1 This is a required item. You can buy it at local office suppliers like Staple or from Amazon.com for under $30. Please get it before school begins. Page 1

2 Class Administration and Assignments 1. I am still making changes in the contents for this online course. Get your textbook and TI BA II plus financial calculator. Please sign on with the NDNU Moodle remote-learner site ( in January 2. The class schedule gives the reading assignments for the week. Students must read the chapters AND the lecture notes. The lecture notes usually contain the materials which will be tested in the exam. For example, the lecture notes on TVM discuss the home mortgage loan and the calculation of monthly payments, which were not covered in the textbook. Additional exercises will be provided. 3. Selected questions and problems from each chapter are assigned as homework exercises. Please use spreadsheet Excel to solve the problems, then your answer to me in at the end of the week. Please save your file under the course number (BUS2224)-your name-assignment number (e.g. BUS2224-JohnDoe- Assignmnet-1) so I can put them in proper order for my grading references. 4. We are using the TI BA II Plus financial calculator for this class. Please work on the tutorial (see Appendix D, page 627) on how to set up the calculator and how to solve for the time value of money problems as soon as possible. 5. We have two exams. The midterm will be distributed at the end of Week 3, and due on the Saturday of Week 4. 3 Assessment, Grading, and Evaluation Assessments Discussion Questions Discussions requiring "real world" critical thinking and calculations will be incorporated weekly. Your initial post should be a minimum of 300 words and a maximum of 1000 words. Your initial response to each discussion question is due every Wednesday at midnight PT. You are then also responsible to reply to at least a minimum of one classmate's initial posts by Sunday at midnight PT. When you reply to your classmate's post elaborate on the key information that is noteworthy in context of this class. Use of supplemental source material and/or examples that objectively support your point is highly encouraged. Homework Assignments Homework will be turned in weekly and will include calculations and questions from your textbook or from your instructor. Exams There will be one midterm and one final exam to evaluate your understanding of the contents and test the application of calculations from the homework assignments. Reflection Assignments Reflection assignments give you a chance to reflect on your experience in the course and your understanding of the course material. Page 3
