3 INTRODUCTION Nursing Times Learning is an online learning management system designed to enhance your learning experience and help you to prepare for the new system of nurse revalidation. This guide will take you through the features and functionalities of Nursing Times Learning and will help you to get the most out of the system. Supported browsers We have developed Nursing Times Learning to work on smartphones and tablets as well as a wide variety of desktop browsers so you can learn anytime, anywhere. Desktop Mobile Internet Explorer (9+) Firefox Google Chrome Safari Safari ios (7+) Chrome Android (4.2+) Where possible we recommend upgrading to the most recent version of your chosen browser. Nursing Times Learning anytime, anywhere You can access Nursing Times Learning on the go wherever you have internet access, and on any device including smartphones and tablets. Your log-in details are the same whatever device you are using. 3

4 HOW TO LOG IN 1 Visit nursingtimes.net and click Sign in on the top right-hand corner of the toolbar If you aren t a registered user of nursingtimes.net you ll need to register. This is free, and only takes a couple of minutes Enter your address and password. Click on the Nursing Times Learning tab Click on the link to enter your Learning Passport 3 4 YOUR PERSONAL PROFILE The first time you visit Nursing Times Learning you ll be taken to your personal profile and prompted to enter your revalidation date. This is the date you are due to renew your NMC registration; if you don t know your date go to Bit.ly/NMCOnline to check it. You can update the information in your profile at any time by clicking My profile settings on the left-hand side of your passport. WHAT CAN YOU ACCESS? Subscribers to Nursing Times have full access to the Learning Passport and all Nursing Times Learning units. Non-subscribers do not have full access to the Learning Passport or learning units, but can retrieve certificates for learning units they have already completed, and access any learning units that have been made freely available to all users. FORGOTTEN YOUR PASSWORD? If you forget your password, click Sign in then Forgotten password. You ll be asked to submit your address. If the address is on our system you ll receive an explaining how to get access again. If you don t receive an , check your junk folder. 5 HOW TO USE YOUR LEARNING PASSPORT (exclusive to subscribers) The Learning Passport is a flexible and easy-to-use e-portfolio that enables you to record evidence of all the events and activities that count towards your revalidation and CPD, and store it in a single place. After you have entered your revalidation date, whenever you log in to Nursing Times Learning you will land on your Learning Passport. This enables you to upload all your revalidation evidence and displays those you have already stored for the current three-year registration period. If you wish to retrieve Nursing Times Learning certificates for units you passed before your current registration period you can do so by temporarily changing your revalidation date to show the relevant period. Toolbar You can return to your Learning Passport by clicking the Learning Passport icon on the toolbar. 5

6 HOW TO USE YOUR LEARNING PASSPORT Adding evidence to your Learning Passport Your passport is structured around the Nursing and Midwifery Council s revalidation system, allowing you to store your evidence in formats that meet its requirements. Records of Nursing Times Learning units you have passed are stored automatically, while evidence of other activities can be stored by clicking the relevant button. If you click the buttons for other CPD, reflections, professional development discussions and feedback you will find templates built into the passport. These are structured to ensure you cover all NMC requirements, and consist of free-text boxes and dropdown lists. You can add other evidence, such as certificates and scanned documents, by dragging and dropping into the Evidence box in the relevant section, or clicking the large arrow to find and upload it from your device or network. If you need to log your practice hours a template is provided in the Document Library, which you can upload to your portfolio when you have logged the required hours. Exporting your evidence from the Learning Passport To export your evidence, click on on the right-hand side of the Learning Passport. This will automatically be downloaded as a.pdf file. 6

7 LEARNING UNIT OVERVIEW Nursing Times Learning units comprise: Clear learning objectives: Set out what you can expect to learn from a unit. Evidence review: Reviews the unit topic, with links to key documents and guidance. Multiple-choice assessments: Assess your knowledge before and after you work through the unit, so you can see how much you ve learnt. Case scenarios: Linked directly to everyday situations and clinical practice, test your knowledge and apply it to your practice. Reflective account template: Available to download so you can use your learning as one of your five reflective accounts for your revalidation. Personalised certificates: Display your score (providing you gain a pass rate), the learning objectives you ve achieved and the date you completed the unit. References and resources: With live links enabling you to go straight to key documents and guidance. Selecting learning units to complete Once logged into Nursing Times Learning, click on the Learning Units icon on the top right-hand side of the screen. This will display a list of the Nursing Times Learning units available to you, depending on whether or not you re a subscriber). Click on the unit title of your choice to go to the learning unit overview. This gives a summary of the unit and lists its learning objectives, and contains the activities you ll work through. 7

8 NURSING TIMES LEARNING UNITS 1. Baseline assessment Click on Baseline assessment followed by Attempt assessment now to begin the assessment. To answer questions select the check box alongside your chosen answers. When you have completed the assessment, click Next, then check the summary to ensure you have not missed any questions. Click Submit all and finish, or Return to attempt. When you submit the assessment you will be presented with your score. 8

9 NURSING TIMES LEARNING UNITS 2. Learning unit Click on the learning unit title to enter the learning unit. The unit should open in a new window; if nothing happens you may need to disable the pop-up blocker on your browser. Go to Bit.ly/DisableBlocker for information on how to do this. The unit s home page displays all the elements of the unit you ll need to work through the evidence review, case scenarios and conclusion. Click on the evidence review box to get started. You must complete all elements in order to unlock the final assessment. Each has a progress bar in the top right of the page when you re working through it, and in its box on the home page, so you can easily see which elements you have not yet completed. Working through the unit Read through the evidence review, ensuring you open any expandable lists by clicking the arrow. To get the most out of the unit, use the live links to read key references such as national guidance or major research. The case scenarios present patient situations, allowing you to test how well you can apply your knowledge to your practice by answering a series of multiple-choice questions. Answer each question by clicking your selected answers, then Submit. You will then be given feedback on whether or not your answer was correct, and further information explaining how the evidence relates to the question. After closing the feedback you can compare your answer with the correct one by clicking Click to see correct answer / Click to see your answer [pic] Moving around the unit You can move from one element to the next by clicking Next and Previous at the bottom of the page. To return to the unit home page click Home at the bottom of the page or the Home icon in the top left of the page. Saving your work When you have completed the unit, click Exit activity in the bottom left of the page to return to the unit overview. You can also use this to save your work and return to it later. Once you have finished a unit you can return to it at any time until it is updated, to refresh your knowledge. When the unit has been updated you will not be able to open it without doing the baseline assessment (units are updated on average every 18 months). 9

10 NURSING TIMES LEARNING UNITS 4. Final assessment You will be told at the beginning of the final assessment what score you will need to pass the learning unit. To begin click on Attempt assessment now. To answer questions select the check box alongside your chosen answers. When you have answered all the questions, click Submit all and finish Submit all and finish at the bottom of the page to get your score. If you fail a learning unit If you did not achieve a pass or want to improve your score you can re-take the assessment after 48 hours. We recommend that you revisit the learning unit before doing this. Giving feedback At the end of each learning unit you will be given the opportunity to provide us feedback on your experience. This helps us to improve our units and the Nursing Times Learning system. 10

11 NURSING TIMES LEARNING UNITS At the end of a learning unit Certificate If you have passed the learning unit you will have a personalised certificate showing your score and the learning outcomes you achieved. To see your certificate, click unit completion certificate, then click Get certificate to open it. Your certificate, score and CPD hours will be stored in your Learning Passport. You can open your certificate at any time to print or show it. 11

12 RESOURCES AND TEMPLATES Document library The Document library contains a range of resources and guidance.if you prefer to complete your evidence in Microsoft Word rather than the templates built in to the Learning Passport, the library contains templates for each type of revalidation activity to complete and add to your passport. Like the templates within the passport, these have been designed to ensure you meet the NMC s requirements. The library also contains key NMC information and guidance on revalidation, and a copy of the NMC Code. 12
