1 K-12 WRITING HIGH ACHIEVEMENT OUTCOMES Mission Statement: Students who complete the K-12 Language Arts curriculum will demonstrate the ability to listen, speak, read, and write at a level that encourages and enables life-long learning. Kindergarten Writing Focus Area: Creating Written Language Grade Level Purpose Statement: Students who complete the Primary (K-1) Language Arts Curriculum will demonstrate ability to be active listeners and speak with correct grammar. They will demonstrate basic levels of reading and writing for both academic and personal use. 1. (1.1.6) Students will print neatly and correctly. Print using appropriate starting points and strokes. Print using a left to right, top to bottom progression. Print uppercase and lowercase letters with recognizable accuracy and comfort.
2 First Grade Writing Focus Area: Letter, Word, and Sentence Formation Grade Level Purpose Statement: Students who complete the Primary (K-1) Language Arts Curriculum will demonstrate ability to be active listeners and speak with correct grammar. They will demonstrate basic levels of reading and writing for both academic and personal use. 1. (1.1.5) Students will respond to fiction and non-fiction text through writing, drawing, and verbal responses. Read/listen to a variety of selections. Discuss the meaning of the selections. Draw pictures and/or write sentences in response to selections. Identify ways in which literary selections relate to their own lives. 2. (1.1.6) Students will print neatly and correctly. Print using appropriate starting points and strokes. Print using a left to right, top to bottom progression. Print uppercase and lowercase letters with recognizable accuracy and comfort. 3. (1.1.7) Students will write about familiar experiences, people, objects, or events. Communicate effectively through writing. Use correct spelling. Use correct grammar. Use correct capitalization. Use correct punctuation. Print their own full names correctly. Use pre-writing strategy such as webbing and brainstorming. Use knowledge of parts of books to create self-made books.
3 Second Grade Writing Focus Area: Forming Words and Sentences. Course Purpose: Students will have the freedom to explore, experience and create words, sentences, and paragraphs through written and oral expression. 1. Students will begin to write using standard English (conventions) for sentence structure, word usage, grammar, punctuation, capitalization and spelling. Recognize and use nouns, verbs, and personal pronouns. 2. Students will write sentences/short stories with main idea and supporting details. Begin brainstorming and mapping to generate and organize ideas. Write several sentences on the same topic. Begin writing compositions with beginning, middle and end. 3. Students will revise and edit sentences. Change and improve organization, content. Begin editing with standard English conventions. Use legible manuscript writing when publishing written work. Use established criteria to evaluate their own writing. 4. Students will begin to demonstrate the use of multiple forms to write for different audiences and purposes. Write sentences, and short stories about people, objects, and events. Write poems of varied forms. Recognize and write parts of a friendly letter. How-to s. 5. Students will begin to ask questions and summarize what they have learned. With help create questions for exploring a topic. With a graphic organizer record important ideas provided as a class. 4 Third Grade Writing Focus Area: Course Purpose: Forming Sentences and Paragraphs Students will have the freedom to explore, experience and create words, sentences, and paragraphs through written and oral expression. 3 rd Grade 1. Students will independently use standard English (conventions) for sentence structure usage, punctuation, capitalization and spelling. Locate and use nouns, verbs, and personal pronouns. 2. Students will begin writing paragraphs/reports with related ideas, and supporting details. Apply brainstorming and mapping to generate and organize ideas. Write 1 to 3 paragraphs on the same topic. Write compositions with a beginning, middle and end. 3. Students will begin to revise and edit narrative compositions. Convert and improve organization, content, word choice, voice and sentences fluency. Edit with standard English conventions. Use legible manuscript or cursive writing when publishing written work. Use established criteria to evaluate their own writing. 4. Students will demonstrate the use of multiple forms to write for different audiences and purposes. Write short stories and compositions about experiences, people, objects and events. Write poems of varied forms. Write friendly letters. Write how to s. 5. Students will engage in authentic writing experiences within a balanced literacy approach while learning how to naturally and comfortably use the writing process. 1. Students will write using standard English (conventions) for sentence structure, usage, punctuation, capitalization and spelling. Identify and use nouns, verbs, and personal pronouns. 2. Students will write paragraphs/reports with focus, related ideas, and supporting details. Use a variety of strategies to generate and organize ideas. Write several paragraphs on the same topic. Write compositions with a beginning, middle and end. 3. Students will revise and edit narrative compositions. Revise to improve organization, content, word choice, voice, and sentence fluency. Edit using standard English conventions. Use legible cursive writing and/or a word processor when publishing written work. Use established criteria to evaluate their own writing. 4. Students will demonstrate the use of multiple forms to write for different audiences and purposes. Write descriptive and narrative compositions about experiences, stories, people, objects, and events. Write poems of varied forms. Write letters. 5. Students will demonstrate the use of self-generated questions, note taking, and summarizing while learning. Generate questions in exploration of a topic. Record important ideas from information provided by others. Use summarization methods including outlining and webbing.
6 Fifth Grade Writing Focus Area: Basic Writing and Reference Materials Grade Level Purpose Statement: Students will communicate effectively through writing. They will read fluently and critically, applying what they have read to their writing and to life. 1. (8.2.1) Students will write using standard English (conventions) for sentence structure, grammar and usage, capitalization, and spelling. Identify and use nouns, verbs and adjectives Identify an variety of sentence structures Apply standard English conventions Memorize weekly spelling words 2. (8.2.2 & 8.2.3) Students will utilize the writing process incorporating the writing model. 7 Sixth Grade Writing Focus Area: Personal Narratives and The Writing Process Grade Level Purpose Statement: Students will communicate effectively through writing. They will read fluently and critically, applying what they have read to their writing and to life. 1. (8.2.1) Students will write using standard English (conventions) for sentence structure, grammar and usage, capitalization, and spelling. Students will identify and use nouns, verbs, adjectives, and pronouns. identify and write complete sentences. define and use four types of sentences. apply standard English conventions in their drafts and final copies. 2. 8 Seventh Grade Writing Focus Area: Creative Writing and Introduction to Research Grade Level Purpose Statement: Students will communicate effectively through writing. They will read fluently and critically, applying what they have read to their writing and to life. 1. (8.2.1) Students will write using standard English conventions for sentence structure, grammar and usage, capitalization, and spelling. Identify and use nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, and conjunctions Compose and use simple and compound sentences. Identify and revise fragments and run-ons. Apply standard English conventions. 2. (8.2.2 & 8.2.3) Students will utilize the writing process incorporating the Writing Traits model. Utilize a variety of brainstorming strategies to generate and organize ideas. Draft compositions with an introduction, body and conclusion. Revise to improve voice, content, organization, word choice and sentence fluency. Edit using standard English conventions Apply skills learned to new pieces of writing. Use legible handwriting or a word processor to produce a final copy of all written work. Demonstrate the use of accepted structure for various genres. 3. (8.2.4) Students will write for different audiences and purposes. Introduced to the accepted structure for various genres. 9 Eighth Grade Writing Focus Area: Academic and Descriptive Writing Grade Level Purpose Statement: Students will communicate effectively through writing. They will read fluently and critically, applying what they have read to their writing and to life. 1. (8.2.1) Students will write, using Standard English (conventions) for sentence structure, grammar and usage, capitalization, and spelling. Identify and use the 8 parts of speech. Analyze sentence structure to revise sentence fragments and run-ons. Apply Standard English conventions. 2. (8.2.2 & 8.2.3) Students will utilize the writing process incorporating the Writing Traits model. Apply knowledge of the Traits model and use the Traits rubric during self, peer, and teacher evaluations. Demonstrate the use of new skills taught in writing assignments. Follow the writing process. Use the accepted structure of different genre. 3. (8.2.4) Students will write for different audiences and purposes. Write narratives, poetry, letters and journals. Write to describe, using adjectives, similes, metaphors, and strong verbs. Use correct essay form to compose reviews, reports, and research. 4. (8.2.5) Students will demonstrate the ability to use self-generated questions, note taking, summarizing, and outlining. Compose self-generated questions while doing research. Take notes, summarize, and outline to compile information from general reference materials, electronic resources, and library resources. Construct a research paper, using the MLA model(modern Language Association).
10 Grade Level Purpose Statement LA 9-12 High school English students will develop a sense of self-esteem, and as a result, respect for the worth and value of others by motivating each to think and reason, read and write, listen and speak as effectively and as confidently as possible to meet the demands of living in a modern society. 9th Grade (Writing) Focus Area: Grammar Study Course Purpose: Students will develop a sense of self-esteem, and as a result, respect for the worth and value of others. Students will think and reason, read and write, listen and speak as effectively and as confidently as possible to meet the demands of living in a modern society. 1. Students will write using standard English (conventions) for sentence structure, usage, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. Identify and use 8 parts of speech Identify and use proper verb tense, pronoun agreement, subject/verb agreement, and cases of pronouns 2. Students will write with focus, related ideas, and supporting details, for the purposes of discovery and self-awareness, for a variety of genres. Write thesis paragraphs Write poetry Write creatively Write descriptively Write personal narratives and journals 3. Students will understand and apply the writing process using the Six Traits Plus One model. Students will write using standard English (conventions) for sentence structure, usage, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. Identify and use 8 parts of speech, phrases, clauses, subject and object complements (direct/indirect objects, predicate nominatives/adjectives), and verbals Identify and use proper verb tense, pronoun agreement, subject/verb agreement, cases of pronouns, and active/passive voice 2. Students will write with focus, related ideas, and supporting details, for the purposes of discovery and self-awareness, for a variety of genres. Write essays (descriptive, informative, and Modern Language Association [MLA] research) Write personal narratives and journals Write short stories 3.
