3 Introduction Write Creatively is a writing program designed to enhance student writing skills and foster creativity. Students use pen names throughout the 22-lesson program to help unleash their creativity under a safe blanket of anonymity. Each unique and fun lesson follows the same four-step process, which consists of creating a rough draft, editing, writing the final copy, and presenting the story. Students are motivated to communicate clearly so the teacher can read their stories each bearing an anonymous pen name with good expression during the presentation step. Plus, as an added bonus, students get the opportunity to glow in the dark while they anonymously soak in the positive responses of peers to their writing. Objectives Students will free up their creativity as they write under the protection of anonymous pen names. Students will master valuable writing skills that they can integrate into other areas of study and life. Students will develop self-editing skills. Students will learn to communicate clearly and neatly so the teacher can read their stories aloud with good expression. Students will receive personal satisfaction from hearing the teacher read their stories and from positive peer reaction. Students will learn from each other through the sharing of their writing. How to Use this Program The lessons in this program do not need to be done in order. Each one is independent of the others and designed to be used as a complement to other areas of the curriculum. For example, when you study verbs in English, present Lesson 3: Spicy Verbs. A teacher page for each lesson identifies the objective or objectives of the lesson, what you need to do before the lesson to prepare, and how to present the lesson. (Note: Lessons 10, 14, 19, and 22 are selfexplanatory and are not accompanied by a teacher page. Simply make overhead transparencies of these lessons and present them to the class.) Support materials such as student worksheets, overhead masters, and detailed assignment pages are also provided. It is recommended that you make an overhead transparency of the assignment page to be displayed as you give the assignment and while the students work. If a student is absent, simply provide him or her with a copy of the assignment page. You may also find it helpful to provide students with individual copies of the writing assignment page to keep them focused on the assignment, especially if they will be working on the assignment outside of the classroom.
