Access to these programs is free to all enrolled UF students and can be obtained through the following web sites: Qualtrics online survey platform: Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS): Course Overview Class meets Mondays and Wednesdays and consists of lectures, discussions, and possible presentations from guest speakers. Mondays will be designated for lectures and topic workshops or group works. Wednesday classes will be used for the learning of new content. The workshops or group works may take place in the classroom or outside of it. Always check Canvas for the 1

2 latest information regarding class. Students should complete all reading assignments prior to class. Class participation may be expected and graded. Course Description LEI 4880 will provide students with a broad understanding of how to design and conduct research in Tourism, Recreation, and Sport Management (TRSM) and related fields. The purpose of the course is to prepare students to investigate a research question of their interest. To this end, students will learn the foundations of the scientific method and will conduct an overview of quantitative and qualitative research approaches. The course will include a hands-on research project that will help students develop research questions, review relevant literature, design the research, collect and analyze the data, and present their results to the class. Course Objectives After successfully completing this course student will be able to: Define the principles of the scientific method, Be able to describe selected research methods/research designs, Identify appropriate situations for the use of selected research methods/research designs, Evaluate the usefulness of published research by critiquing the methods used and interpreting the results, Understand basic concepts of human research subject protection and ethics, Design a study which includes sampling, sampling design, and data collection Be able to conduct and correctly interpret some of the statistical procedures used in research including descriptive and inferential statistics, Design effective graphs and tables, Demonstrate the application of research to issues and problems of concern to practitioners in tourism, recreation, and sport management, With a team, present in both written and oral formats the results of a research project Course Format The course will include: lectures, class discussions, and in class and online activities. All students will be required to participate in group discussions. Students are required to read all assigned materials prior to class and class participation is expected at all times. You are expected to demonstrate respect to peers and the instructor during all class activities. Any disruption of such a favorable teaching and learning environment might lead to an incomplete grade or classroom dismissal. 2

Course Requirements Students must complete all major components as described in the course syllabus/outline (assignments, exams, project, etc.) in order to pass the course. In-Class Activities (50 points) Students will be expected to actively participate in class discussion in person (this means more than simply attending class). Students will be ready for classroom discussion by preparing materials, reading the assigned text and meeting with group members as scheduled. In addition, there will be unannounced in-class activities, each for a value of 5 points for a total of 50 points. In-Class Activities Several activities (worth 50 points total) will be conducted in class throughout the term to review lecture and textbook materials, as well as to apply the course concepts. This activity will require you to read an assigned case and answer question(s) regarding the problem/issue(s) depicted in the case. Most of these cases will be from the textbook, related to the chapter recently covered (if the cases are not from text book, the materials 3

4 will be posted to the resource tab on the CANVAS in advance). Further instructions on how to approach a case study and generate solutions will be provided. Make-ups will not be given for any in-class activities without notifying the instructor prior to the class period, as well as providing the proper documentation (see the Course Policies). Activities will not be announced beforehand. Failure to attend class on the date of an inclass activity (without prior notification and documentation) will result in a zero for that assignment. Those who notice the instructor before class will get take home questions after the class and get up to 80% of the points. Students who arrive late to class on these days will not be given extra time to complete the activity. Exams (200 points) There will be two exams during the semester: Exam 1 (100 points) and Exam 2 (100 points). Exam 1 will cover the chapters discussed since the beginning of the course, while the Exam 2 will cover chapters discussed after the midterm exam. Additionally, instructor may omit certain chapters depending on the class progress. Exams will include multiple choice and short essay question. Two exams will be administered at the classroom (exam paper and scantron will be distributed). Make-up exams cannot be given for unexcused absence. Should an unusual circumstance arise where a student must miss the scheduled exam, a one-time appointment will be arranged for the student to make up the exam. 1 to 5 optional take home questions may be included for extra credits. Team Research Project (250 points) All class assignments will be submitted online through the course web site. Each team have 3 to 4 students. All team assignments are designed to help the students through the process of writing a complete research paper. Please note that while this a team effort, for each assignment 80% of your grade will be based on your individual effort and 20% of your grade will be based on the team product. The research project will be developed with the following assignments: Project proposal (20 points) This assignment has a value of 20 points. The assignment consists of one page: Page 1: Provide team number and names of all team members, a topic for your research project, and an abstract, see link below for abstract guidelines ACT.pdf 4

5 Page 2: Provide at least two research questions that your team could potentially address in this project. For each research question provide a hypothesis. Make sure each hypothesis is: stated in a declarative form, posit a relationship between a dependent and an independent variable, brief and to the point, and testable. Indicate the names of the dependent and independent variables for each one of your hypothesis. Literature review (20 points) This assignment has a value of 20 points. Each team member is responsible for providing two paragraphs of literature review each with at least two citations. The student name should be in bold right before her or his contribution. The document should flow seamlessly, with same font type and size, and same page layout from beginning to end. Please use a maximum of four pages. Page 1: Provide team number and names of all team members, a title for your research project, and an abstract. Please provide the research question that your team will address in this project. Please provide the hypothesis that your team will test in this project. Pages 2 & 3: Provide literature review. Page 4: Provide a list of references in APA format. Survey (20 points) This assignment has a value of 20 points. The team will design a questionnaire using Qualtrics. The questionnaire should be appropriate to obtain the data that will help the team answer the two research questions that will be addressed during this project. Each student should provide three questions for the survey. The student name should be in bold right before her or his contribution. The document should flow seamlessly, with same font type and size, and same page layout from beginning to end. Please use a maximum of three pages. Page 1: Provide team number and names of all team members, a title for your research project, and an abstract. Please provide the research questions that will be addressed in this project. Please provide the hypothesis that your team will test in this project. Pages 2 & 3: Provide the Qualtrics Survey. Export your survey by Clicking on Tools and then clicking on Export Survey to word. Please also send the survey from Qualtrics to jinwonkim@ufl.edu by clicking on the distributions tab. Research model / Questionnaire approval (20 points) This assignment has a value of 20 points. The team will describe the methods to be used and the final questionnaire to be used in this project. The student name should be in bold right before her or his contribution. The document should flow seamlessly, with same font type and size, and same page layout from beginning to end. Please use a maximum of four pages. Pages 6 & 7: Provide the final questionnaire. Page 8: Provide a list of references in APA format. Research paper first draft (35 points) This assignment has a value of 35 points. The team will present a first complete draft of the research paper. The student name should be in bold right before her or his contribution. The document should flow seamlessly, with same font type and size, and same page layout from beginning to end. Please use a maximum of ten pages. Page 1: Provide team number and names of all team members, a title for your research project, and an abstract. Please provide the research question that will be addressed in this project. Please provide the hypothesis that your team will test in this project. Research project presentation (35 points) This assignment has a value of 35 points. The team will present the research paper to the class. Each team member must present a portion of the research. Presentations should involve multimedia (PowerPoint, video, pictures, Prezi, etc.). The presentation should flow seamlessly, with same font type and size, and same presentation layout from beginning to end. Please use a maximum of ten slides. The presentation should be minutes long. Research paper (100 points) This assignment has a value of 100 points. The final draft of your research project represents the finished semester project. The student name should be in bold right before her or his contribution. The document should flow seamlessly, with same font type and size, and same page layout from beginning to end. Please use a minimum of ten pages and maximum of twelve pages. Page 1: Provide team number and names of all team members, a title for your research project, and an abstract. They are a means to an end, not an end in themselves. Course Schedule The course schedule is tentative and subject to change. Changes will duly be announced in class and posted on the CANVAS. Class Policies Students are expected to be professional in class, which requires them to: Attend class. If students are absent, they are responsible for getting information from a classmate. Actively participate in class at all times. Active participation includes asking thoughtful questions, contributing knowledge and ideas relevant to the topic, volunteering answers to questions, and sharing examples or relevant material from other readings, classes, and media sources. Be punctual with regards to class attendance and due dates. 7

8 Be prepared to participate in class. Students are required to read all assigned materials prior to class. Be courteous and respectful to your peers, guest speakers, and the instructor. If students disrupt the class, they will be asked to leave. Disruptive behavior includes: Participating in side conversations which are irrelevant to the class subject during class. Reading materials irrelevant to the class subject, including reading the newspaper, using your cell phone for any reason, or your laptop for any reason other than taking notes. Working on assignments for another class. Leaving the classroom early and arriving late, especially habitually and without a legitimate excuse. Attendance & Late Assignment Policy Requirements for class attendance and make-up exams, assignments, and other work in this course are consistent with the University s policies. For more information about UF s policies, please consult Students with prior knowledge of an excused absence must make arrangements to submit assignments prior to the due date. Documentation must be provided to the instructor for an excused absence. Excused absences include, but are not limited to, personal illness, family illness or death, jury duty, religious holiday, and official University activities. Absences will be excused at the instructor s discretion. Permit for absence from the instructor is needed before taking a leave. A penalty will be enforced if a student fails to submit an assignment by the deadline (without prior notification and documentation). The equivalent of 20% will be deducted from the assignment grade immediately after an assignment becomes late. After 24 hours, an additional 10% will be deducted per day past the due date. There are no exceptions to this policy.
