2 WHAT IS HOME EDUCATION? - Parents being totally responsible for their child s education. 2 YOU SHOULD KNOW THE LEGAL ASPECTS OF HOME EDUCATION IN TENNESSEE: As a home educating parent, you have ultimate responsibility for your child s education and your own school in your home. It is our recommendation that you protect your rights as a home educator by being familiar with the law in Tennessee concerning home education. IS DANIEL 1 ACADEMY STATE ACCREDITED? No, we are not state accredited. State accreditation would require teachers (parents) to be state-certified and for curriculums used to be stateapproved. Of course that is not possible with homeschooling. HOW DOES THAT AFFECT MY STUDENT S FUTURE IF HE GRADUATES FROM DANIEL 1? Students earning our diploma can still go on to college or get a job. There may be a few universities across the nation who may question a homeschooler s credentials but most colleges are welcoming homeschool students. Sometimes homeschool students have had trouble getting government jobs or entrance into the military. The problem is usually solved by student getting a GED. WHAT ABOUT CURRICULUM? On the Homeschool Program you may choose to use any curriculum you desire. Curriculum is provided by Daniel 1 for students on the Correspondence Program. We use a combination of Alpha Omega Lifepacs and A.C.E. Paces. The Online Program uses a web-based curriculum called Ignitia, published by Alpha Omega. IS ACHIEVEMENT TESTING REQUIRED? NO Daniel 1 no longer offers achievement testing. Parents of elementary students who want testing should search the internet where there are many options from which to choose. High school students will still have a testing requirement using the ACT test. See the section on high school for more information. WHAT DO I NEED TO SEND IN TO GET ENROLLED? To avoid any problems, just be sure and enroll before August 1st. We will take enrollments all year but waiting too late may mean that nothing will be posted on student s transcript for 1st semester. THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO NEW STUDENTS TRANSFERRING TO D1A FROM ANOTHER SCHOOL. DANIEL 1 OFFERS MIDDLE SCHOOL & HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS Any student in grades 6-12 can try out for our sports teams. We have a girls volleyball team (grades 6-12), a middle school boys basketball team (grades 6-8), a girls high school basketball team and a boys high school basketball team. 3 THREE PROGRAMS FROM WHICH TO CHOOSE 3 THE HOMESCHOOL PROGRAM This is the traditional do-it-yourself program. Parents are responsible for all aspects of their child s education: registering, choosing and purchasing curriculum, teaching and grading. They then report the semester grades (due on Jan. 30 and June 30 of each year) to Daniel 1 Academy to be placed in the student s permanent file. Parent or guardian of student must have a high school diploma or GED and be able to show proof of it. You must fill out applications for all children being registered but you only have to pay for the 2 oldest children. ***ALL FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE*** THE ONLINE & CORRESPONDENCE PROGRAMS INCREASED ACCOUNTABILITY INDIVIDUALLY-PRESCRIBED CURRICULUM INDIVIDUALIZED ASSIGNMENT SCHEDULE The ONLINE PROGRAM is for families who want more assistance from the staff at Daniel 1. Students on this program will be logging onto a website each day, reading their lessons, completing homework assignments as well as taking all quizzes and tests over the various units. Their schoolwork is scheduled for them in advance so that by following the daily schedule all work will be completed by the middle of May. Students will have access to a teacher at D1A who will answer questions that they may have over their schoolwork. Parents will be able to monitor daily their student s progress and grades. Parents will still be responsible for making sure the student completes all schoolwork on schedule. The CORRESPONDENCE PROGRAM is for families who want more assistance from the staff at Daniel 1 but prefer a workbook format instead of a computer. Students on this program will receive packages containing one unit of each subject that the student is taking in the form of workbooks. Each package contains enough schoolwork for three weeks. Students and parents will need to grade the daily work and quizzes. Upon completing all the work in the unit, the student returns that package to D1A and receives the next unit package. Staff at D1A will grade the unit tests. Parents will be provided a yearly schedule showing when each unit should be completed but will need to help the student schedule daily work in order to finish a unit in three weeks. Parents will still be responsible for making sure the student completes all schoolwork and returns it to D1A on schedule. Payment Options 1 Payment of full tuition $ 1200 ($200 discount) You may choose to pay for the whole year at the time of registration by cash, check, money order or credit card. Payment Plan $700 down with enrollment and then $700 due January 6 Tuition for 2nd Semester only $ 700 with enrollment (No payment plan.) Part-time Fee ( $300 per subject) - Available for students wanting only 1 or 2 subjects

4 MISC INFORMATION & POLICIES 4 CONFIRMATION PACKET WILL ARRIVE BY MAIL Containing ID cards for students and teacher Once your student s application has been completely processed, you will receive a confirmation packet containing the following: a Teacher I.D. card and a Student I.D. card - These cards are helpful anytime you need to prove your student is enrolled with Daniel 1 for the current year. Any students who will be out in public during the day should carry their I.D. card to show if questioned about not being in school. Teacher I.D. cards can be shown at some stores to receive a teacher discount. Please do not throw them away. There is a $5.00 fee to replace lost cards. D1A Information Sheets This could include copies of school calendar and semester grade report form. Please put this in a safe place where you can refer to it throughout the year. High School Information Sheet (if you enroll a student in grades 9-12) This will contain information on reporting high school credits and on D1A s requirements for graduation. Please put this in a safe place where you can refer to it throughout the year. Graduation Information (if you enroll a graduating senior) - This will contain information about the senior year including deadlines and applications for graduation. Keep these forms and return at the appropriate time. CHANGE OF ADDRESS OR PHONE If during the school year your address or phone number changes, it is your responsibility to notify Daniel 1 of the change. WITHDRAWING DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR HOMESCHOOL STUDENT To withdraw your student from D1A during the school year, you must fill out a Withdrawal Request Form, (available at D1A or on website), complete a Semester Report Form with grades earned up to the point of withdrawing, and turn both forms into Daniel 1. We will not release records unless all accounts are settled and semester reports have been turned in. All fees are non-refundable. CORRESPONDENCE & ONLINE STUDENT To withdraw during the school year, you must fill out a Withdrawal Request Form, (available at D1A or on website), and turn it in along with any borrowed materials. You will have to pay any outstanding obligations before we will release records to another school. All fees are non-refundable. KEEPING UPDATED We maintain a website to keep our members informed of upcoming deadlines and events. A school calendar is posted on the website also. It is the responsibility of parents to use the website to stay informed. If you do not receive your confirmation letter and I.D. cards within 2 weeks of registering, please call and notify the school. Otherwise we will assume you received it. STAYING INFORMED OF D1A EVENTS...IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY FOUR WAYS TO STAY INFORMED 1. Visit our website on a regular basis. - We update it often plus the school calendar is posted there from the beginning of the school year. 2. Keep the school calendar on your refrigerator - You will receive a copy in the confirmation packet that will be mailed after you enroll. 3. Sign up for reminders. - By giving us an address on the enrollment page, you will be signing up for reminders. These are sent out only a few times a year.

5 DANIEL 1 ACADEMY - HIGH SCHOOL INFORMATION Educating high school students at home involves more planning and record keeping than elementary grades. Daniel 1 Academy desires to help parents with this task. We maintain the student s permanent academic record including an official transcript of subjects, grades and credits. Graduates can choose to participate in our yearly graduation ceremony. Graduates of D1A are accepted at colleges and universities but may be required to take the GED if they score below average on college entrance exams. 2 requirements for graduating from D1A: 1. Earn the minimum number of high school credits 2. Students enrolled 2nd semester only can earn a max of 4 credits. Students cannot earn high school credits before 9th grade unless they have received permission to do so by the D1A administrators prior to beginning the school year. Call the office at the beginning of the year to ask about it. To graduate before age 17, student must have a composite score of 22 on the ACT test. Transcripts from D1A are unweighted. We do designate any courses taken as dual enrollment. TESTING REQUIREMENT FOR GRADUATION FROM DANIEL 1 Any student wishing to earn a D1A diploma must take the national ACT test and make the following scores at least once during the high school years: English - 15 / Math - 16 / Reading - 16 / Science - 17 To graduate with honors, a student must score at or above the benchmarks on the ACT test. (Honors students will be recognized at the graduation ceremony and on the transcript.) The scores for honors are: English - 18 / Math - 22 / Reading - 22 / Science - 23 A student may register for the ACT test by visiting their website at When completing the registration for the test, you must enter Daniel 1 Academy s high school code of so that they will send a copy of your student s scores to D1A. We recommend that students take the ACT the first time in 10th grade for a baseline score which can then be improved upon by studying areas with low scores and re-taking the test during the 11-12th grades. Class rank is determined by ACT scores with the Oct test of the senior year as the last one accepted for that purpose. Seniors can still take later tests for graduation purposes if needed. Any student who does not meet the testing requirement will need to contact their local adult education department to take the GED test instead.

6 What Is A High School Credit? In public schools a high school credit represents 150 hours of classroom time. For D1A homeschool students there are two ways to earn high school credits. 1. Complete a published curriculum. An example of this would be if your student is studying from an Algebra 1 textbook. When he completes the book, he has earned 1 credit in Algebra 1 regardless of the amount of time he took. Whether he completed it in 1 semester or in 3 semesters he would still receive 1 credit of Algebra Complete 150 hours of hands-on learning. Sometimes a student will study a subject that has no textbook. For example to satisfy the requirement of a credit of Fine Arts, a student may spend 20 hours singing in a choir, 70 hours performing in a play, 25 hours in an art class and 35 hours taking dance lessons. He should keep a record of the time spent doing everything and when he has completed 150 hours he will have earned 1 credit in Fine Arts. At D1A we call this credit journaling. HOW TO REPORT HIGH SCHOOL SEMESTER GRADES TO D1A How you report your student s semester grades to D1A affects how easy or difficult it is for our staff to create your student s transcript. Reporting credits correctly is not difficult. There are just a couple of important points to remember which helps make the process easy for everyone. 1. Report subjects with the specific names. For example, DO turn in a credit called either American History or World History rather than reporting just a History credit. DO turn in a credit for Biology or Physical Science instead of turning in a credit for Science. DO NOT submit the title of the textbook as the name of the subject. 2. Turn in numerical grades, not letter grades. Our staff will be averaging the grade from 1st semester with the grade from second semester to determine the final grade that goes on the transcript for the full credit. If you turn in a B first semester and then an A second semester, there is no way of averaging them. 3. Make sure you are reporting the correct amount of credit earned. Most students complete a ½ credit the first semester and then another ½ credit the second semester. Each half-credit represents completing half of the year s work. After we receive the second semester report, we add the two halves together and put 1 whole credit on the transcript along with an average of the two number grades reported for each half-credit. If your student completes a whole year s worth of a subject during one semester, then you should report the credit earned as 1 whole credit and the grade you give will be the final grade that is put on the transcript. DO NOT report ½ credit for first semester and then 1 credit for second semester when you are meaning that they completed 1 credit for the year. That makes it look like they earned 1 ½ credits instead of only 1 and it confuses us as to how to handle the number grades. 4. Keep a copy of what you turn in to D1A for your own records. Reports sent by mail sometimes get lost in the mail and even those submitted over the internet can get lost in cyberspace. We will send you a copy of the student s transcript at the beginning of each year along with the ID cards so that you can compare your records with ours and make sure everything is recorded correctly. Getting a Driver s Permit In order to apply for a driver s permit, all students must take a letter from their school proving their enrollment and satisfactory progress. To receive this letter you should call our office and request one. Homeschool students must have current grades reported to D1A so that we can verify progress. Online and Correspondence students must be on schedule with their school work. Within a week you may pick up the letter at D1A or we will mail it. High School Transcripts Parents will receive an unofficial copy of their student s transcript, free of charge, along with the confirmation letter and I.D. cards that are mailed after we receive the enrollment forms. There is a $5 charge for official copies to any other schools or organizations. You may call our office with your request or print off the Request Form from our website and return it to D1A. Allow up to 1 week for processing. Graduates will receive two official copies at the time of graduation as part of the graduation fees.
