1 SIMMONS campaign newsletter fall 2010 making education WORK. You ve never been shy about taking bold steps to prepare for the future and neither has Simmons. The Making Education Work Campaign the largest in Simmons s history is a bold investment in students who aspire to learn, lead, and make a difference in the world. WHAT S INSIDE FAQs PROGRESS TO GOAL CAMPAIGN PRIORITIES WAYS TO GIVE We invite you to learn more about this transformational moment in Simmons s history in this, the inaugural issue of The Making Education Work Campaign newsletter. The Making Education Work Campaign is a practical, powerful way for Simmons alumnae/i and friends to actively support the kind of transformative learning that enables our students to link their passions with lifelong purpose. Together, we can prepare students for service and leadership in their careers and communities. President Helen G. Drinan 75LS, 78SM
2 CAMPAIGN FAQ Making Education Work means putting the power of a Simmons education to work for current and future students and alumnae/i. We re increasing the number of scholarships available to help students achieve their education goals. And we re making bold investments in our faculty and academic programs to further enhance the value and prestige of every Simmons degree. What s the Campaign for? > New scholarships and other financial aid will help aspiring Simmons students achieve their goal of an innovative, high-quality education that prepares them for their life s work. > Strategic investments in our academic programs will support faculty/student research, internships, and other vital learning tools. Will my small gift really matter? > Yes! Small gifts collectively have an impact that s the power of community. Your gift also helps us compete for grants from corporations and foundations they always ask How many alumnae/i give? See how Simmons compares with competitors on the Alumnae/i Giving charts (right). 3 I feel the impact of my Simmons education every single day, and I know other alumnae/i feel the same way. Through the Making Education Work Campaign, we can make sure that generations of students experience the challenges and rewards of a Simmons education, just as we have done. Every step of progress toward our $85 million Campaign goal puts the dream of a Simmons education that much closer for students who aspire to learn, lead, and make a difference in the world. Campaign gifts will generate more scholarships and other financial aid. They will also enhance the vitality of our academic programs by supporting faculty and fostering innovation in classrooms and labs. Please join me and other alumnae/i and make a gift to the Campaign. 4 CAMPAIGN PRIORITY scholarships Gifts Help Students Prepare for Life s Work We re at our best when students are first. So we re asking visionary alumnae/i and friends to help aspiring Simmons students pursue their education and career goals. Gifts for scholarships, internships, and study abroad all provide direct aid and have the power to transform a student s life. Simmons Must Offer More and Larger Scholarships In recent years as much as 88% of Simmons students have required financial aid. The more than 300 scholarships established by generous alumnae/i and friends are a huge help, but demand outpaces supply. More students than ever are scrambling to pay for college due to dwindling student-loan options. Simmons scholarship awards range from $5,000 - $25,000, but some competitors can offer twice as much and lure away desirable prospective students. HOW SIMMONS COMPARES Our Competitors: Percentage of Aid Need Met Percentage % Mount Holyoke COLLEGE SMITH COLLEGE BOSTON UNIVERSITY UNIVERSITY OF NH EMMANUAL COLLEGE SIMMONS COLLEGE Source: College Board 2009 Trends in Higher Education MASS PHARM i believe that we can do more than we have ever imagined, learn more than we have ever thought, and lead more than we ever dared. dr. Charlena M. Seymour Provost and Chief Academic Officer donor PROFILE $100,000 SCHOLARSHIP GIFT PROMOTES DIVERSITY Beverly Kerness Unger 44 Wants to Help Students Make a Difference The Making Education Work Campaign s focus on scholarships couldn t be timelier, says Beverly Kerness Unger 44, explaining why she used her first major gift to Simmons to establish an endowed scholarship. I thought the time was right with the economic downturn. More than ever, a scholarship can make all the difference in the world to someone who really deserves to come to Simmons. Unger says she hopes her gift will enrich the experience of all students by adding socioeconomic, geographic, and cultural diversity to Simmons. I want this scholarship to go to someone who really couldn t have come otherwise, said Unger, The entire student body will benefit from having another point of view in the classrooms and dorms.
5 CAMPAIGN PRIORITY ACADEMICS Gifts Support Faculty, Scholarship, and Teaching Excellence Gifts from alumnae/i and friends are enhancing our already impressive academic programs. They fuel more hands-on, student/faculty collaborations on innovative research and scholarship that produces joint journal articles and conference presentations. The Campaign is also revitalizing labs and other learning spaces to foster more ah-ha! moments in which real learning takes place. donor PROFILE $2 MILLION GIFT ENHANCES NURSING PROGRAM Phyllis Nickerson Dotson 62 and George Dotson Promote Diversity, Revitalize Labs Phyllis Nickerson Dotson 62 and her husband, George, say giving is one of life s pleasures. There s constant gratification that you have given back and you have honored an institution like Simmons. The Dotsons s $2 million gift launched The Phyllis Nickerson Dotson 62 and George S. Dotson Fund for Academic Excellence, and it s having a powerful, two-fold impact on nursing education at Simmons. The Dotson Bridge and Mentoring Program helps Simmons simultaneously address the nationwide shortage of nurses and correct racial and ethnic disparities in the profession. Academic support and mentoring helps Simmons attract and retain ethnically and culturally diverse students. The Dotsons s gift has also transformed the nursing labs through a renovation that included adding advanced simulation technology and other teaching tools that help prepare our students to excel in today s technologyrich hospital rooms and other healthcare settings. When you see your money well spent, and the impact it has made, you want to give again, says Phyllis Dotson 62. i m collaborating with faculty mentors on research focused on teaching nurses about spiritual care. The simulation lab helps students try different scenarios and develop teamwork and communication skills. Maria Hedberg, RN 12HS Direct-entry master s nursing program
