2 STAFF Coordinator Keynote speakers Yvonne Denier Philosopher and Ethicist, Centre for Biomedical Ethics and Law, KU Leuven and Zorgnet-Icuro (Care Network Flanders, Belgium) Prof. Dr. Greg Bognar Greg Bognar is a senior lecturer in Practical Philosophy at Stockholm University and a senior researcher at the Stockholm Centre for healthcare Ethics. His research is in normative and applied ethics, especially bioethics and what is known as politics, philosophy and economics. In his writings, he often ends up defending prioritarianism. He is co-author (with Iwao Hirose) of the book The Ethics of Health Care Rationing: An Introduction (2014) Prof. Dr. Em. Ruud Ter Meulen Ruud Ter Meulen is Emeritus Professor of Ethics in Medicine at the University of Bristol. He was Director and Professor in Philosophy at the Institute of Bioethics and the Universiteit Maastricht, the Netherlands, before moving to Bristol in He is editor-in-chief of the volume Rethinking Cognitive Enhancement (2017) and has published over 150 articles, chapters and books in medical ethics. He was visiting scholar at the Hastings Center in New York and at the Brocher Foundation, Switzerland, and President of the European Association of Centres for Medical Ethics (EACME). He recently published a new book Solidarity and Justice in Health and Social Care (2017). 3 CENTRE FOR BIOMEDICAL ETHICS AND LAW The Centre for Biomedical Ethics and Law (KU Leuven) consists of a number of experts in medical ethics and medical law. The Centre aspires to provide education, research and scientific and societal service in medical ethics and law. The Centre was created in 1986 and has celebrated its 30 th anniversary in 2016 ( BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES In the spring of 2018, the Centre for Biomedical Ethics and Law (KU Leuven) organizes the fourth edition of the successful intensive course Justice and Priority Setting in Health Care. This course is an excellent occasion to reflect on present and future ethical challenges regarding choices in health care within an international setting. Starting point of the course is the fact that contemporary health care systems face many challenges, which essentially boil down to the following question: How can we reconcile (1) the principle of justice and equity for all, with (2) the assignment of providing good quality care, and (3) the principle of economic sustainability? The objective of this intensive course is to analyse the key issues at stake, both from a theoretical perspective and from the perspective of applied ethical questions. FORMAT This course works from an interdisciplinary perspective. During the course, an international group of philosophers, economists, theologians, physicians, nurses, pharmacologists, psychologists, lawyers, policy makers and health care managers, will focus on the issue of justice and priority setting in health care. There will be plenty of time for lively discussions. The language of instruction will be English. PARTICIPANTS The course is of interest to participants from diverse professional backgrounds, such as medicine, philosophy, economy, sociology and theology and is open to health care workers, health care ethicists, people from the healthcare administration, health care managers, board members, policy makers, as well as to PhD students undertaking courses of study in these areas. The course is accredited for physicians. The reading materials will be distributed in advance.
