The successful candidate will be a committed educator and industry leader, with a record of achievement in higher education, and evidence of significant roles within the dynamic professional environments of hospitality and tourism. New York University: An Introduction More than 175 years ago, Albert Gallatin, the distinguished statesman who served as secretary of the treasury under Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, declared his intention to establish "in this immense and fast growing city... a system of rational and practical education fitting for all and graciously opened to all." Founded in 1831, New York University is now one of the largest private universities in the United States. Of the more than 3,000 colleges and universities in America, New York University is one of only 60 member institutions of the distinguished Association of American Universities. From a student body of 158 during NYU's very first semester, enrollment has grown to more than 40,000 students attending 18 schools and colleges at five major centers in Manhattan and in sites in Africa, Asia, Europe, and South America. Today, students come from every state in the union and from 133 foreign countries. The faculty, which initially consisted of 14 professors and lecturers (among them artist and inventor Samuel F. B. Morse), now totals over 3,100 full time members whose research and teaching encompasses the humanities, the sciences, and the social sciences; the law; medicine; business; education; the fine arts, studio art, and the performing and cinematic arts; music; social work; public administration; the ancient world; and professional studies. With more than 2,500 courses offered, the University awards more than 25 different degrees. Although overall the University is large, the individual schools and colleges are small to moderate sized units each with its own traditions, programs, and faculty and there are many communities to be found within the NYU community based on interests, activities, and shared experiences. The center of NYU is its Washington Square campus in the heart of Greenwich Village. Hospitality and tourism are major global economic sectors, and the Tisch Center serves these growing and evolving industries by offering relevant, cutting edge curricula that attract bright, motivated students who seek to become leaders in their fields. Through undergraduate degrees in hotel and tourism management, graduate degrees and certificates in hospitality industry studies and tourism management, a plethora of noncredit programs, and worldrenowned conferences, the Center provides students with the tools to manage change, communicate, thrive in complex work environments, and advance the businesses of hospitality and tourism. At the Tisch Center, the City is our laboratory, the industry is our faculty, and our students are the future of the profession. The Tisch Center is named for the late Preston Robert "Bob" Tisch ( ), a pioneer and visionary recognized throughout the world for his leadership in hospitality, tourism, and sports. A dedicated advocate of New York City for years, Mr. Tisch was chairman and Co CEO of the New York Giants, and provided leadership of Loews Hotels and Loews Corporation. He served for 19 years as the chair of the New York Convention and Visitors Bureau, and was instrumental in spearheading the I Love New York campaign, which won more than 30 awards. There is no one who could serve as a more positive role model for our students. The Tisch Center for Hospitality and Tourism enjoys an international reputation for innovative undergraduate and graduate professional studies, the applied research expertise of its practitioner faculty, its deep and mutually supportive connections to the New York and global industry communities, and the quality of its programs. Its undergraduate programs attract highly qualified, traditional age students, and are unique for fully integrating liberal arts education within a rigorous, professionally focused, academic orientation. The Center s two dynamic Master of Science curricula and its two graduate certificates enjoy high standing and accommodate both full time and part time students. Additionally, its non credit professional education programs, conferences, seminars, and workshops collectively serve the universe of professionals involved in hospitality and tourism. The Tisch Center s nine full time and nearly 60 adjunct faculty members, along with a cadre of distinguished lecturers, prepare over 600 matriculated undergraduate and graduate students to become innovative and socially responsible leaders in their chosen fields. They also contribute to the continuing education of nearly 10,000 professionals each year through non credit offerings, certificate programs, invitational lecture series, and the Center s signature professional event, the annual NYU Hospitality Industry Investment Conference (entering its 37th year). The Center is known for the strength of the communities it sustains. A committed team of industry leaders provides guidance, advocacy, and philanthropic support to the work of the Center. 6 NYU School of Professional Studies, Tisch Center for Hospitality and Tourism Page 6 The Position Reporting to the Dean of NYU s School of Professional Studies, the Associate Dean will lead Tisch Center faculty and staff and draw support from the field to advance the academic mission of the Center. The Associate Dean will benefit from the collegial support and complementary academic expertise of the other units across the School and will draw on the worldwide resources of NYU s global network to carry out a vision for the Center that succeeds in increasing its profile and visibility nationally and internationally. The successful candidate will possess advanced academic and professional credentials (Ph.D., or comparable advanced terminal degree preferred), and a minimum of ten years of substantial direct professional and academic experience. S/he will be qualified to hold a faculty position at the level of clinical professor. In addition, s/he will show evidence of: conceiving academically sound and timely programs for rapidly evolving disciplines; building and sustaining synergies and collaborations within a university setting, as well as with industry partners; a vision for higher education that supports rigorous academic standards; a commitment to advancing a global agenda and building the global character of academic programs; deep interest in engaging with diverse constituencies, including faculty, staff, students at all levels, alumni, and industry partners; long standing engagement in the hospitality and/or tourism sectors and deep relationships across these industries; an ability to support and evaluate the work of a research active and industry connected academic faculty; an understanding of how to support students career development and how to engage employers from the hospitality and tourism sectors; strong administrative, management, leadership, and fundraising skills; innovation, entrepreneurship, and the ability to conceive of and implement an exciting vision, in collaboration with others; decisive, objective decision making that moves processes forward in an environment open to change and innovation; and cultural sensitivity and a deep appreciation of diversity.
