Swimming instilled an ethic of hard work for the sake of self-growth at physical, emotional, and professional levels. It helped me gain confidence to make the decision of taking a semester off from school to work for a non profit environmental conservation corps and earn Americorps hours. Knowing that I am my own engine allowed me to independently pursue this experience both financially and logistically. I am someone who thrives on the moral that a pursuit, personal and/or professional, should be powered by genuine passion. This is why I felt I needed to take a break from school, because I did not have a solid image or goal at the end of my studies. So I had to experience working in the conservation field to instill a new sense of purpose when I returned to school. Merits do hold value, but hard work and devotion to yourself and the causes you believe in I think produces the most successful and amazing outcomes.

I work on B cell immunity, specifically. To simplify it as much as possible, we are studying B cell selection and differentiation in germinal centers and characterizing subsets of memory B cells. Swimming has helped get me to where I am today because it really kept me focused and in shape while in college. It was a huge in building time management and building a network of friends who now reside all over the country. Had it not been for swimming, I probably wouldn't have ended up at the school I did. The people I met through LEHY, and my later swimming career, guided both my college choices as well as career decisions.
