International Programs The International Programs Office provides unique learning opportunities and programs aimed at addressing complex issues international students face in university transition, language learning and cultural immersion. Ranging from short-term summer programs to full year conditional admission programs, the International Programs provides high quality enrichment, transition, and preparatory programs to prepare international students for success. The IEP is available for students of all English levels, and provides customized educational, social, and cross-cultural experiences where students from over 30 countries develop a sense of belonging to a global community while improving their English language skills. Immersed in an English language environment at Canada s premier university, students leave the program with a valuable global experience which will help them achieve their professional and educational goals. 5 INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH PROGRAM (18+) Morning Courses Afternoon Courses General English Course (GEC) Speaking & Pronunciation Course (SPC) Minimum Level Required: None Levels Offered: All levels Classes: 10 hours/week Minimum Level Required: None Levels Offered: All levels GEC offers daily classes led by fully-accredited English teachers that develop all aspects of students English abilities, including: speaking, listening, writing, reading and vocabulary. The aim of the course is to help students improve their confidence, fluency, and grammatical accuracy through a variety of communicative activities, such as collaborative projects, discussions, and presentations. Students are encouraged throughout the course to share their opinions and cultural experiences. SPC uses a wide variety of classroom activities to improve each student s ability to communicate orally in English. Classes specifically concentrate on developing pronunciation, listening, and conversation skills. Students also practice delivering oral presentations and participating in group discussions. English for Global Business 1 (EGB1) TOEFL ibt Preparation Course (TPC) Business Experience: Not required EGB1 is designed for students who wish to become more comfortable using English at work, or who are planning on a business career. Classes will help students develop fluency and confidence in everyday business English including: introductions, telephone and face-to-face conversations, participating in meetings, making presentations, writing effective s, and intercultural business communication. English for Global Business 2 (EGB2) Business Experience: Minimum 1 year business experience EGB2 is aimed at students who already use English at work, but who wish to develop their language skills to handle higher-level communication such as leading meetings, writing memos, negotiating, and promoting intercultural client relationships. Academic English Course (AEC) Levels Offered: Intermediate, High TPC is designed for intermediate and advanced students who plan to study in an English-speaking country and want to prepare for the TOEFL ibt during their stay at the University of Toronto. Throughout the course, students learn test taking strategies and develop the skills necessary for success on the TOEFL ibt. At the end of the course, students take the TOEFL ibt Complete Practice Test and receive their practice test scores. IELTS Preparation Course (IPC) IPC, like TPC, focuses on developing the skills that are essential for success on the IELTS Academic Test while also preparing students for communication demands at an English language university. Students focus on a variety of critical reading, discussion, essay writing, and academic listening skills. Practice tests are used throughout the program. University Seminar Classes: 6 hours/week CULTURAL ACTIVITIES A variety of evening events and weekend excursions are organized by International English Programs staff. From Toronto s many distinguished art galleries and museums, to its fashionable shopping districts and eclectic nightlife, the city s diversity makes Toronto an ideal destination for international visitors. Students can attend world-class theatrical and musical performances, explore Toronto s vibrant ethnic neighbourhoods, and experience some of Toronto s most popular attractions including a professional baseball game at the Rogers Centre, an unforgettable boat ride to the base of Niagara Falls, a trip to one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World the CN Tower, or discover some highlights of French Canada. Students will have the opportunity to sign up for activities prior to their arrival at the programs. There will also be pay-as-you-go activities available during the program. Each student is offered a comfortable and air-conditioned room with high-speed internet access. Living in residence provides students with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in a global community by living with their classmates from around the world and practice speaking English. FOOD Students are given the option to purchase a meal plan at their residence that best suits their individual needs. Toronto also has a dynamic and diverse culinary scene that reflects our multicultural community. AEC is designed for students who would like to develop the essential skills for success at an English medium of instruction university and study in a challenging environment. Students focus on developing critical reading, oral presentation, seminar discussion, note taking, essay writing, and research skills through a combination of classroom learning and individual research. Students should also expect to complete reading and writing assignments outside of class time. The University Seminar is designed for students who are interested in trying out a university course in English. This year s University Seminar is Contemporary Issues and Popular Culture. The course investigates how popular culture, notably film, television, and online media, can influence our understanding of social and political issues such as national/civic identity, ethnicity/race and gender/sexuality, through interactive lectures, class discussions and critical readings. 6 PRE-UNIVERSITY PROGRAMS Advanced Academic Program Global Citizenship Program ADVANCED ACADEMIC PROGRAM The Advanced Academic Program (AAP) provides an opportunity for students to challenge themselves in an academic university setting during the summer months. Designed for high school students with a strong level of English, the Advanced Academic Program will immerse students in engaging projects and discussions using course material and activities typical of a Canadian educational institution. During this 4-week all-inclusive program, students will be immersed in an English language environment at Canada s top university, and learn about, analyze, and discuss a range of concepts related to the subject they are taking. The course will culminate with an independent research paper and academic presentation. Students have mandatory morning and afternoon courses, and will participate in cultural activities in the evening and weekend excursions. Designed for students with advanced levels of English, these innovative and forward-thinking programs provide the opportunity for students to immerse themselves at Canada s premier university and gain valuable skills and experiences. Students have the choice of attending our 4-week Advanced Academic Program (AAP), or our 3-week Global Citizenship Program (GCP). Evaluation & Certificate: At the end of the program, all students receive a personalized evaluation and those who successfully complete the course are awarded a Certificate of Course Completion from University of Toronto, New College. Please note that the AAP is an enrichment program and does not provide advanced standing or credit for university courses. Students will be fully immersed in an international community at the University of Toronto, honing their global literacies and skills that will prepare them for success in their pursuit of higher education. 7 ADVANCED ACADEMIC PROGRAM (15-18) Morning Courses World Economics Afternoon Courses Law, Ethics & Society Advanced Academic Program Global Citizenship Program In this course, students will apply fundamental economic concepts, such as scarcity, wealth, productivity, trade-offs and markets, to learn how our economic behaviour influences, and is influenced by, a globalized, interconnected world. Students will be encouraged to research and reflect upon how these concepts are understood in their own countries and to share their knowledge with their classmates. How do we decide between right and wrong? Why do we need laws? What are our rights and obligations as citizens? This course challenges students to take on some of society s toughest questions. Through case studies, group projects, guest speakers and field trips, students will learn the basic principles behind the Canadian legal system, exploring how it compares their own. Language & Literature Film & Cinema Studies What can the written word tell us about a culture? How does what we read and write influence us? Through class discussions and personal reflections, students will critically analyze a range of fiction (such as novels, short stories, or poetry), investigating its original social, cultural and historical contexts; they will then be encouraged to consider how their own cultures and life experiences affect how they interpret a text. Each student is offered a comfortable and air-conditioned room with high-speed internet access. Living in residence provides students with a unique opportunity to live with their peers and experience residence life at Canada s premier university. The dining hall at New College provides students with a comfortable dining area to enjoy the all-you-can-eat menu. This course will explore how film communicates beyond words. Topics covered include genre traditions (sci-fi, horror, documentary, etc.), production techniques, and principles of visual composition. During in-class screenings and discussions, students will analyze the many ways in which filmmakers convey stories, ideas, emotions, and biases. For their major project, they will have the opportunity to try out some of these strategies for themselves. Critical Thinking in Statistics In this course, students will learn the fundamentals of mathematical statistics and data analysis, critically examining how statistical data is collected and used to model reality. Through individual work, class discussions, and group projects, students will also apply their analytical skills to explore cognitive bias, game theory, and decision-making. CULTURAL ACTIVITIES A variety of evening events and weekend trips are organized for students by the International Programs staff. GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP PROGRAM Over the course of three weeks, students (ages 15-18) in the Global Citizenship Program (GCP) will explore different elements of global citizenship and discover their place in an interconnected world. Through a variety of teaching methods, lectures, and hands-on activities, students will develop leadership and communication skills that build a global perspective. With a greater understanding of global citizenship and the tools to act, the program will empower students to engage within their own communities and contribute to the building of a more global society. 8 GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP PROGRAM (15-18) 1EXPLORE During the first week of the program, students will explore the various social structures and current issues of our global community and challenge their knowledge and understanding of what global citizenship means. Governance Structures and Systems Resources, History, and Power Human Rights Media Literacy Current Global Issues 2DEVELOP During the second week of the program, students will develop their own sense of identity and refine the necessary skills crucial for working with others within a diverse international community. Personal Identity Values and Responsibility Diversity and Respect Privilege and Inequality Communication and Interconnectedness 3BUILD During the final week of the program, students will design group projects, building on the knowledge and skills cultivated in the first two weeks. This project challenges students to find a way to ethically and responsibly engage in our global community to change the world. Shared Beliefs and Vision Challenges to Organization Ethical Decision Making Social Justice Making a Change CLASSES & WORKSHOPS Students will attend both Communication Classes and Global Citizenship Workshops. During the Communication Class, University of Toronto instructors will work with students to build on media literacy, critical thinking, and communication skills, allowing students to expand their communication abilities through one-onone and group interactions. These skills will be put into practice during afternoon Global Citizenship Workshops, where students can explore new ways of thinking and challenge their views of the world. Trained facilitators who are upper-year undergraduate or graduate students will lead the Global Citizenship Workshops, offering students the opportunity to discuss and learn about global citizenship through interactive and reflective learning experiences. Together with a team of students from all over the world, GCP students will work collaboratively on a Global Challenge throughout the three weeks, culminating in a final project where they will use their critical thinking and communication skills learned during the program to create a potential solution to a real-world problem. Advance your English at Canada s premier university The Youth International English Program (Youth IEP) offers different courses of study designed to meet the educational goals of a wide variety of youth students. The Youth IEP is a summer camp suitable for students (ages 12-18) of all English ability levels, from beginner to advanced, that provides customized educational, social, and cross-cultural experiences that develop students English ability and sense of belonging to a global community. Immersed in an English language environment at Canada s premier university, students are given the opportunity to develop friendships with students from over 30 countries. The friendships that are made during the program will help students become future global citizens while enjoying all that Toronto has to offer during the summer months. 10 YOUTH INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH PROGRAM (12-18) Morning Courses (Mandatory) Afternoon Courses (Optional) General English Course (GEC) Extended English Course (EEC) Age: 12-14, Course Length: 3 or 4 weeks Levels Offered: All levels Age: 12-14, Course Length: 3 or 4 weeks Levels Offered: All levels GEC offers daily classes led by fully-accredited English language teachers that develop all aspects of students English abilities, including speaking, listening, writing, reading, and vocabulary. The aim of the course is to help students improve their confidence, fluency, and grammatical accuracy through a variety of communicative activities, such as collaborative projects, discussions, and presentations. Students are encouraged throughout the course to share their opinions and cultural experiences. The EEC is designed to expand upon and enhance the content covered in the morning GEC, through engaging communicative activities with an emphasis on hands-on group projects. Students will also be required to complete written work, such as creative writing, blogs, or articles for the IEP newsletter. Academic Preparation Course (APC) Age: APC challenges students to develop their English in an academic setting. With a particular focus on writing, critical reading, and oral presentation skills, it is especially appropriate for motivated students who are considering applying to an English-language university. Students should arrive ready to participate in class discussions and debates, to work individually and in groups, and to learn from one another. IELTS Preparation Course (IPC) Age: Length: 4 weeks IPC focuses on developing the skills that are essential for success on the IELTS Academic Test while also preparing students for the communication demands at an English language university. Students focus on a variety of critical reading, discussion, essay writing, and academic listening skills. Practice tests are used throughout the program. TOEFL ibt Preparation Course (TPC) Age: Length: 4 weeks ACCOMMODATION & FOOD As a residential program, living in residence is mandatory for all Youth IEP students. Students will live in the safe and secure environment of the University of Toronto s downtown residences, which are walking distance from most of Toronto s major tourist attractions. Each student is offered a comfortable and air-conditioned room with high-speed internet access. Living in residence provides students with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in a global community by living with classmates from around the world. Living in residence provides students with many opportunities to use English and gain confidence speaking with other students from around the world. Students will be supervised by program counsellors, who live in residence with the students and are also responsible for leading and supervising the cultural activities. During their stay in residence, students will have access to the New College dining hall, which provides students with a comfortable dining area to enjoy the all-you-can-eat menu. CULTURAL ACTIVITIES A variety of afternoon activities, evening events, and weekend excursions are organized by International Programs staff for all students participating in the Youth International English Program. These activities and events offer opportunities for students to explore Toronto s vibrant ethnic neighbourhoods, shop in the city s trendiest areas, and experience some of Toronto s most popular events including a professional baseball game at the Rogers Centre, an unforgettable boat ride to the base of Niagara Falls, and a trip to one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World the CN Tower.
