The business disciplines discussed include management, international business, marketing, finance, economics, accounting and business law. This course provides useful information for business majors and any others involved in owning or operating businesses. This course is also recommended for students expecting to take ACG 2021 Principles of Financial Accounting. Pre-reqs: No corequisites or prerequisites. Additional Class Information: Online class. Computer & Internet access required. 2 Measurable Course Objectives Measurable Course Objectives are outcomes students are expected to achieve by the end of the course. Explain the definition of a business and describe its risks and rewards. Define the term entrepreneurship and its importance to small business development. State the impact of economics on business. Define economic terminology: GDP, CPI, unemployment rates etc. Discuss the differences between economic forms of business ownership: capitalism, socialism and communism Differentiate between the legal forms of business: Sole proprietorship, partnerships and corporations and the role that franchising plays in business ownership. Discuss the four basic functions of management: Planning Organizing, Leading, and Controlling. Describe the role of marketing in business and methods used to satisfy customer's needs. Define and illustrate the marketing mix: product, price, place and promotion. Paraphrase the steps involved in product development and a product?s life cycle. Analyze a balance sheet and income statement and use ratios to evaluate a business?s financial performance. Describe the difference between equity and debt financing. Summarize the relative advantages and disadvantages of each. Differentiate the purpose of primary vs. secondary stock markets. Analyze and report on a Fortune 500 company?s financial performance. 2

She worked for over twenty years in the financial industry in the New York area and moved to Florida 3

4 to establish an operations center for a financial group. Kate has had several consulting assignments around the United States. Kate has worked as an adjunct professor for Seminole State College and Rollins College. She also accepts short term consulting projects for business and nonprofit organizations. Grade Scale and Evaluation Methods Course Requirements: This course has seven major components: 1) Required weekly textbook readings; 2) Required LearnSmart (Graded) 3) Required video quizzes (Graded); 4) Required weekly quizzes (Graded); 5) Required: Stock Market Report: Fortune 500 Company (Graded). Grading Scale: % A 80-89% B 70-79% C 60-69% D Below 60% F Methods of Evaluation: Stock Market Report = 40% of Grade. 4

5 Quiz Grades = 25% of Grade. Video Quiz Grades = 25% of Grade. LearnSmart Grades = 10% of Grade Description of Methods of Evaluation: NO MAKEUPS ARE ALLOWED FOR QUIZZES, VIDEO QUIZZES, STOCK MARKET REPORT AND LEARNSMART. Quizzes: A quiz will be assigned for each chapter. Quizzes can be taken up to three (3) times. The highest score for each chapter quiz will be counted towards your grade. Quizzes are comprised of 25 multiple choice questions. The lowest two (2) quiz scores will be dropped. IMPORTANT: You will have sixty (60) minutes to complete each quiz. ONCE YOU BEGIN A QUIZ YOU CANNOT STOP AND START OVER AGAIN! Stock Market Report: Each student will prepare a Stock Market Report on an individual company. Please see the sample Stock Market Reports listed online by clicking on the Modules tab and then clicking on Sample Stock Market Reports. Video Quiz: There are thirteen (13) video quizzes which may be attemped up totwo (2) times. The highest score will be counted towards your final grade. The quiz requires you to watch a short video and respond to up to five (5) questions. The lowest two (2) video quiz grades will be dropped. You have sixty(60) minutes to complete each quiz. LearnSmart: There is a LearnSmart exercise required for each chapter available through MHConnect. Forty (40) correct answers are required to complete each exercise. The lowest three (3) scores will be dropped. Class Assignments Please check the MODULES page for detailed information regarding class assignments. It is important for students to check the inbox regularly for important communication from the instructor. 7 Collegewide Student Learning Outcomes The Collegewide Student Learning Outcomes assessed and reinforced in this course include the following: Communication Critical Thinking Information Literacy Global Sociocultural Responsibility Attendance Policy The College recognizes the correlation between attendance and both student retention and achievement. Per College Policy Students are expected to attend all classes, actively participate and complete all assigned course work for all courses for which they are registered. For online classes, attendance is determined by consistently logging in and accessing the course content and completing courses in accordance with the syllabus. Simply logging in to an online class does NOT count as attendance. Students must engage in an academically-related activity. You will be withdrawn from the class if you do not complete a minimum of one (1) assignment by Wednesday, October 19, Simply logging into an online class does not count as attendance. Do this by selecting Discussions in Canvas from the menu on the lefthand side of the course page. Failure to do this will result in being dropped from the class. Academic Integrity As members of the Seminole State College of Florida community, students are expected to be honest in all of their academic coursework and activities. Academic dishonesty, such as cheating of any kind on examinations, course assignments or projects, plagiarism, misrepresentation and the unauthorized possession of examinations or other course-related materials, is prohibited. 7

8 Plagiarism is unacceptable to the college community. Academic work that is submitted by students is assumed to be the result of their own thought, research or self-expression. When students borrow ideas, wording or organization from another source, they are expected to acknowledge that fact in an appropriate manner. Plagiarism is the deliberate use and appropriation of another's work without identifying the source and trying to pass-off such work as the student's own. Any student who fails to give full credit for ideas or materials taken from another has plagiarized. Students who share their work for the purpose of cheating on class assignments or tests are subject to the same penalties as the student who commits the act of cheating. When cheating or plagiarism has occurred, instructors may take academic action that ranges from denial of credit for the assignment or a grade of "F" on a specific assignment, examination or project, to the assignment of a grade of "F" for the course. Students may also be subject to further sanctions imposed by the judicial officer, such as disciplinary probation, suspension or dismissal from the College. Withdrawal Policy A student desiring to withdraw from a course after the add/drop period should initiate withdrawal procedures with an instructor or counselor. Withdrawals are not official until the withdrawal form is completed and given to the Office of Enrollment Services and Registrar. Withdrawal deadlines are published in the official College Catalog Academic Calendar. The College Tobacco-Free Policy can be found at elearning Information To succeed in an online course, you need to be: motivated self-directed willing to work on your own Online courses are not for everyone. They are neither easier nor more difficult than on-campus courses, but they do require more dedication and selfdiscipline from the student. If you like to interact face-to-face with a professor and classmates, or if you have difficulty managing your time, this might not be the best course delivery mode for you. However, if you can read and understand technical information, follow instructions as given, and solve computer problems on your own without asking for much help, online instruction should work well for you. Good time management skills, selfdiscipline, and motivation are required to successfully complete an online course. 10

11 Canvas Learning Management System Canvas is the online learning management system at Seminole State College. If you are enrolled in an online, online/campus, hybrid, or Web-enhanced campus class, your course will be offered through Canvas. To login to Canvas visit the Seminole State Homepage and select online classes and Canvas login. You also may login directly to Canvas at Your Canvas login information is: USERNAME - Same as your MySeminoleState username PASSWORD - Same as you use to login to Seminole State computer labs. The default password is your first initial CAPITALIZED + your last initial lowercased + the last two digits of your birth year + your birth month in a two-digit format + your birthday in a two-digit format. Alternatively your password may be your first initial and last initial CAPITALIZED + the last two digits of your birth year + your birth month in a two-digit format + your birthday in a two-digit format.
