2 COURSE SYLLABUS INFT 105 INTRODUCTION TO LITERACY INFORMATION COURSE DESCRIPTION An introduction to the information literacy skills and resources needed for academic research and lifelong learning. Students will learn to identify, assess, organize, and report information responsibly, including library print and electronic materials as well as web resources. RATIONALE This course is foundational to using information appropriately for the student s other Liberty University classes, and is one of the core competencies of general education at Liberty University. Students enrolled in online courses spend an average of two hours per week accessing the digital domain, searching for literature, and evaluating sources. The quality of learning depends on the extent to which students become effective independent information users. Information literacy ensures that student s search, access, evaluation and use of information, regardless of format, is appropriate to productive learning experiences. I. MEASURABLE LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: A. Determine the nature and extent of information needed. B. Collect or retrieve and evaluate the information that is appropriate to the academic level or discipline. C. 3 D. Access and use information legally and ethically. E. Use, individually or as a member of a group, information effective to accomplish a specific purpose. V. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS A. Course Requirements Checklist After reading the Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1. B. Information Literacy Pre-test and Post-test (2) Both tests are multiple-choice. They will measure the student s information literacy skills at the start of the class and when the class ends, to determine what the student has learned in the class. The student will earn full credit for completing each test, regardless of how many questions are answered correctly. The pre-test must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Monday of Module/Week 1 and the post-test must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Friday of Module/Week 8. C. Discussion Board forums (5) The student will complete five Discussion Board forums in Modules/Weeks 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6. Each forum will consist of a thread in which the students discuss what they have learned, what they are confused about, and what they hope to learn next. The initial threads are due by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Friday of the assigned module/week. Students must reply to at least one classmate. The reply must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Monday of the assigned module/week. D. Narrow Research Question Students will pick a broad topic question from the list of approved broad topics in Blackboard. They will narrow the broad topic in preparation for the Article and Annotated Bibliography assignments. The narrow research question must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Monday of Module/Week 2. E. Book Bibliography Students must find 5 books related to one of broad topics provided in Blackboard. The bibliography must be formatted in APA. The book bibliography is due by t 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Monday of Module/Week 5. F. Article Bibliography Students must find 5 articles related to the narrow topic question they chose in Module/Week 2. The bibliography must be formatted in APA. The article bibliography is due by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Monday of Module/Week 6. G. Interlibrary Loan Book Request Students must register their ILLiad account and submit a request for an interlibrary loan book through the ILLiad system. It is very important that students put a note in the note section that says Not Needed; For INFT 105. If Page 2 of 4

4 this note is not added, the book will be shipped to the student and the student will have to pay for return shipping. The book request submission is by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Monday of Module/Week 7. H. Annotated Bibliography The student will write an annotated bibliography in APA format, based on their narrow topic question chosen in Module/Week 2. The annotated bibliography must include one book, one scholarly article, one popular article, one website, and one source of the student s personal choice. Each reference citation must include an annotation which explains the type of source, where the source was found, and the student s search strategy. This assignment is due at 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Friday of Module/Week 8. I. Quizzes (6) The quizzes are composed of 10 multiple-choice/multiple-answer questions. Each quiz is closed notes and has a time limit of 20 minutes. The quizzes must be completed by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Monday of Modules/Weeks 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, & 7. J. Tests (4) The tests are composed of 10, 15 or 20 multiple-choice/multiple-answer questions. Each test is closed notes and has a time limit of 40 minutes. The tests must be completed by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Monday of Modules/Weeks 3, 5, & 7. The final test must be completed by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Friday of Module/Week 8. VI. COURSE GRADING AND POLICIES A. 5 Assignments that are submitted after the due date without prior approval from the instructor will receive the following deductions: 1. Late assignments submitted within one week of the due date will receive a 10% deduction. 2. Assignments submitted more than one week late will receive a 20% deduction. 3. Assignments submitted two weeks late or after the final date of the class will not be accepted. 4. Late Discussion Board threads or replies will not be accepted.
