Discussions focus on the potential influences of learner characteristics and other factors to enhance online learning. Also, it will address potential issues about supporting student learning in virtual work spaces using a Learning Management System (LMS) (e.g. Moodle) and designing similar online learning environments. 2 CHILD-REARING PRACTICES OF CEU STUDENTS FAMILIES AND THEIR IMPLICATIONS TO VALUES FORMATION: BASES FOR CURRICULUM ENHANCEMENT Dr. Teresita G. Carey, Dr. Aida S. Villanueva, Dr. Maria Lourdes R. Baello, Dr. Milagros L. Borabo, Dr. Lolita D. Pablo, Ms. Tessie A. Ramirez, Dr. Imelda C. Nery, Dr. Teresa D. Ramirez This paper discusses a recent study on child-rearing practices of CEU students families to determine their implications to values formation and to use them as bases for curriculum enhancement. To realize the purpose of the study, the researchers prepared questionnaires which comprise parent-respondents birthplace/place of residence, religion, civil status, work experience and the size of their family, as they may have an effect on their child-rearing practice. The other components of the first set of questionnaire identifies the various child-rearing practices among the respondents in terms of setting and family structure while the second set determines the values of children, analyzed in relation to the perceptions of the parents. Copies of the questionnaire were distributed to 381 students who came from Region 1-12 as well as from CAR, NCR, and ARMM. The study tried to find out the rearing practices of the parents that help develop their children s values, which in turn, will be used as bases for curriculum enhancement. The results show that, in general, the children of the parent-respondents manifest the values perceived by their parents and drawn from their child-rearing practices. Page 2 of 6

3 UTILIZATION OF SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES OF GOVERNMENT AGENCIES FOR DISASTER PREPAREDNESS AND MANAGEMENT Ma. Stephanie Joy A. Cortado (Faculty) It is a study on how the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC); Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA); and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) utilized Facebook and Twitter, how their posts and tweets were classified, what replies they had to comments/suggestions from their subscribers and the problems they encountered in preparing for and managing disasters. This qualitative research employed content analysis and interview. A total of 5,430 posts and 862 tweets of these agencies were analyzed from the periods September 2012-August 2013 and September 18-24, 2013, respectively. Questions were formulated and experts were interviewed as well. The results revealed that these agencies have utilized Facebook and Twitter to easily connect with netizens and disseminate information about rainfall advisories, flood, typhoon and traffic updates although replies to subscribers concerns were not seen as an important feedback mechanism. The use of English, jargons, scientific terms, URLs, PDF files, images with illegible texts and without captions, their late updates and failure to reply were the problems encountered. 4 A TRACER STUDY OF MASS COMMUNICATION GRADUATES OF CENTRO ESCOLAR UNIVERSITY FROM SCHOOL YEARS Christopher Jay M. Cortado, Ph.D. (Faculty) This study traced the Mass Communication graduates of Centro Escolar University in terms of their employment. The graduates, both Broadcast and Journalism majors, belonged to the batches. Questionnaires were sent using two modes: and Facebook. addresses were obtained from typing the names of the graduates on the search engine of Facebook. If the information was available, the questionnaire with the cover letter was sent to them. On the other hand, the free surveymonkey application was used on Facebook to eventually make the questionnaire more public with its popularity nowadays. A total of one hundred fifty (150) graduates responded to the tracer study which was conducted from May 2009-April The results of the study may not provide a general scenario but they surely provided a glimpse of where the Mass Communication graduates are at present. The data reveal that a considerable number of the surveyed respondents are practitioners in media fields. This concretizes the notion that Communication Arts interface with all professions. A total of 2,800 students from the three campuses (Malolos, Mendiola, Makati) of Centro Escolar University (CEU) were chosen randomly as samples used to establish the local norms of the said test. Three types of local norms were constructed: university, year level, and program types (science and non-science). Percentile ranks along with Z-scores were computed from which the norms are most commonly computed. T-test of independent means and ANOVA were employed to determine if there is significant difference in the means of program type, high school type, gender, year levels, campus location, and socio-economic statuses (SES) as some factors to consider in constructing local norms. It is found that only program types and year levels have significant difference in their means. Hence, separate local norms were established for these two factors along with university norms. Six verbal interpretations were used for score interpretation, such as: unreflective thinker, challenged thinker, beginning thinker, practicing thinker, advanced thinker, and master thinker. These were based on the stages of critical thinking development formulated by Paul and Elder. Specifically, it also sought to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the community program for the elderly in terms of being offered by the CEU-SELAMS; the perceptions of the different respondents on the strengths and weaknesses of the SELAMS-COP activities; the impact of the Community Outreach Program for the elderly in terms of their personal values, socio-cultural values, spiritual values, and services; and the enhanced program for the elderly which may be implemented by SELAMS. The study used the following data-gathering instruments; in-depth interview which focused on the strengths and weaknesses of the services offered by the SELAMS volunteers were shared and discussed; and observation of the behavior, involvement, and practices of the elderly in relation to the services offered by the SELAMS COP volunteers. The results of the study revealed that the SELAMS-COP activities had a great impact on the enhancement of the personal, spiritual, and socio-cultural and services values of the elderly of Lualhati ng Maynila. As a recommendation to improve the implementation of the SELAMS Community Outreach Program, integrated outreach program expressed in a flow of communications and coordination between and among the COP volunteers, starting from the School, Dean to Faculty and Student Volunteers, including the specific activities conducted by SELAMS volunteers with well-defined job description of all SELAMS-COP volunteers had been crafted as a result of the impact study.
