2 Kaleidoscope Academy Handbook Please note that Kaleidoscope Academy is a community education ministry of First Presbyterian Church. In this handbook you will come to understand our mission, as well as receive helpful information about calendars, policies, and procedures. While this is a Christian ministry, instructors giving music lessons in the public schools will honor the same standards for public education as our schools and public school teachers, and respect the importance of separation of church and state. Kaleidoscope Academy is staffed by Christian instructors, qualified and competent in their individual areas of expertise. Kaleidoscope Academy provides an environment where Christ is honored and students are challenged to develop their God-given talents for the glory and service of God. It is our goal to: provide high-quality instruction Kaleidoscope Academy provides high-quality instruction in many areas, with private and group lessons available to children, youth, and adults. provide a spiritual environment for the student Kaleidoscope instructors are Christians from various faith communities, who work to help develop a student s skills, build self-esteem, and experience positive interaction with others. affirm the image of God and others Kaleidoscope Academy reflects to students the understanding that they are created in the image of God and that their gifts and abilities are to be used for the glory of God. build connections between faith and life Kaleidoscope Academy creates an environment in which learners are encouraged to explore the subject through the lens of faith and space where natural conversations can occur that link faith with life as they learn and use their gifts and skills. reclaim the church s role as a center for arts and learning Kaleidoscope Academy fosters exploration of arts and learning with the hope of inspiring the next generation of leaders in areas such as church music and liturgical arts, as well as serving as a hub for community learning in a wide array of subjects. extend the educational ministry of First Presbyterian Church of Snohomish Consistent with over 137 years of bringing Christian education to the people of Snohomish County, Kaleidoscope Academy expands other areas of educational ministry to children, youth, and adults.

4 Kaleidoscope Academy Locations With the exception of Group Lessons taught in area schools, Lessons and Classes will be taught on First Presbyterian Church of Snohomish campus. Tuition and Fees Please note: Students are considered to be registered for the full academic year. Payments are arranged by unit. Private Music Lessons: 30 Minute Private Lessons per week: $25 per lesson 60 Minute Private Lessons per week: $50 per lesson Group Lessons: 45 Minute Group Lessons per week: $7.50 per lesson (class size minimums will be applied) Payment Options: Registration is to be completed online through Kaleidoscope Academy s website: Payment is accepted online by debit/ credit card or by check made payable to FPCS (mark Kaleidoscope in the memo line.) Payment confirms your registration and holds your place in the class or lesson. Lessons are to be paid for in-full at least one day prior to the lesson. Mid-term registration is allowed for group lessons only with the approval of the instructor.

5 Kaleidoscope Academy Calendar For Private Lessons Fall 12-week Unit September 3 November 25 Holiday Festival of Music on November 23, 2-5PM Winter 12-week Unit December 1- March 7 (note: Monday group classes will be 10 weeks long) Spring 12-week Unit March 9 June 8 (note: Monday group classes will have fewer weeks) Spring Recital on June 7, 2-5 PM Summer Units Private Lessons will be offered a la carte style, by selecting only the days and times students & teachers will be available. Schedule for Group Lessons at Kaleidoscope will vary. Group Lessons in Select Snohomish Schools Group lessons will be offered at select Snohomish schools before or after school. Classes will not be held during school closures. Fall Unit September 29 December 19* (Note: Tuesday and Wednesday classes will have 13 weeks of class) Holiday Festival of Music on November 23, 2-5PM Winter Unit January 5-April 1 (April 1 AM classes only) Spring Unit March 9 June 5 Spring Recital on June 7, 2-5 PM At least one concert will be scheduled in cooperation with the individual school (date to be determined.)

6 Breaks and Holiday Schedule *Instructors will reschedule private lessons that occur on the following dates as needed: Thanksgiving Break: November no lessons/classes scheduled Christmas Break: December 20 - January 4- no lessons/classes scheduled *Martin Luther King Jr. Day: January 19 - reschedule with teacher *Presidents Day: February 16 - reschedule with teacher *Holy Week: March 30 - April 3 *lessons/classes after 5:30 PM will be rescheduled with teacher Spring Break: April 4 - April 12 - no lessons/classes scheduled *Memorial Day: May 25 - reschedule with teacher *Independence Day July 4 - reschedule with teacher Inclement weather: Kaleidoscope Academy will follow the Snohomish School District s decision for starting late or closing. Procedure for Registration: Complete the online registration form and either pay online (a new registration form will be required each September). Upon receipt of an confirmation, you will be able to pay online following the online link provided in your confirmation. Read the Kaleidoscope Academy Handbook New Students: Sign and bring to your first lesson/class the last two pages (Student/Parent Agreement and Medical Release) found at the end of this handbook.

7 General Policies and Procedures Safety All instructors have passed criminal background checks, and will be trained in the child safety procedures established at First Presbyterian Church of Snohomish. All lessons will be taught in rooms that either have a window in the door, or an open door. Children under 12 are never to be left alone to wait for transportation, or allowed to wander the campus without supervision. Entrance to the Building All students are asked to enter and leave through the main entrance of the building near the reception desk / office. At First Presbyterian Church, students of all ages will be asked to check in and out of the building at the reception desk. Students at Snohomish schools will follow school designated procedures for entering and leaving the building before or after school hours. Transportation for lessons held at First Presbyterian Church Students under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a parent or designated guardian to and from the classroom where their lessons take place. An indoor waiting area is provided at First Presbyterian Church and parents or guardians are encouraged to remain in the building during the lesson. Some instructors may also require parents to observe the lesson to maximize the benefit of the lesson, and for parents to understand expectations and assignments. Pick Up Parents or designated guardians are expected to be on site and prepared to pick up the student by the end of the lesson, out of respect for the instructor s schedule and the student(s) whose lesson follows. Instructors will only release a student under the age of 12 to those persons designated on the student s registration form, or if necessary, delegate this responsibility to Kaleidoscope Academy staff or school staff. At First Presbyterian Church, students over the age of 12 will be released to a public waiting area, which may be unsupervised, and are to be checked out of the building by persons designated on the registration. Students taking classes in Snohomish Schools will either be released by the Kaleidoscope instructor to walk to their classroom, or to a parent or designated driver indicated on the registration form. Parents picking up a student after school are asked to park, meet the instructor at the school entrance and check out the student with their signature.

8 Instruction Students of music are highly encouraged to commit to an entire year of participation, but are only financially obligated to one unit at a time. All Private Lessons (including ones being made up) will be taught by the Kaleidoscope Instructors on the First Presbyterian Church of Snohomish campus. Teachers will be prompt in starting and ending classes and lessons. Classes and lessons will not be extended due to a student s tardiness. Each student will be encouraged to participate in recital and/or concert opportunities if the instructor considers this appropriate. Financial Obligations No refunds will be issued for unused lessons or classes. A $25 fee will be charged for all returned checks. Attendance policy We consider your private and group class and lesson time as a standing appointment. Regular attendance is expected of all students. Making up lessons and classes: If a lesson is missed and meets the requirements below, then a makeup lesson can be rescheduled. Kaleidoscope Academy holiday Inclement weather closure (in accordance with the Snohomish School District) Teacher needing to cancel Medical or Family emergency (private lessons only) Notifying the instructor at least 24 hours in advance of the scheduled lesson (private lessons only) All instructor-initiated absences and cancellations will be made up. If it is necessary for an instructor to miss a lesson, students will be notified as far in advance as possible. Lessons will be rescheduled at a mutually convenient time. When a private lesson student misses a lesson The instructor will attempt to schedule one make-up lesson per private lesson student per unit - however, this will entirely depend on the instructor s availability and the building/room availability.

9 A 24-hour notice to the instructor is preferable. If a private lesson student wakes up ill on the morning of a lesson, the instructor should be called directly before 9 AM Note: because messages cannot always be relayed through the church office, the instructor s cell phone number will be provided. Refund policy Each student makes a commitment to complete the unit for which he or she has registered. No adjustment of charges or refunds will be made in the case of withdrawal after lessons have begun. A student should not register for lessons if he/she believes that there may be any reason for withdrawal later in the term. The inability to find time for practice, change in the desire to learn, or changes in the student schedule are not acceptable reasons for withdrawal. Special circumstances, such as medical emergencies or a permanent move from the area, may be eligible for consideration. Dress Code We require all students to dress neatly and modestly for their lessons, in congruence with Snohomish School District standards. Special dress instructions may be given for recitals, concerts, worship services, and/or special performances. Please complete the forms on the last two pages of this handbook for each student and bring with you to your first lesson.

10 Kaleidoscope Academy Student/Parent Agreement Please note: if you are reading this electronically, please print and bring this form to the first lesson/class. As part of this agreement, Kaleidoscope Academy will: * provide excellence in instruction * begin and end lessons and classes on time * strive for open communication between instructors, students, and parents * seek to be a positive influence in the life of the student As part of this agreement we as students and parents will: * be prompt and prepared for each lesson or class * maintain a regular practice schedule * follow the makeup policies as outlined in this handbook * be prompt in making payments in accordance with the policies set forth in this handbook * commit to studying for the entire unit for which the student is registered * participate in in the term events, recitals, or concerts ( if applicable) as outlined in this handbook * show respect to the Kaleidoscope Academy faculty, other students, and the church and school facilities * adhere to all policies as stated in this handbook Group Classes/Lessons By signing below, I acknowledge that I have read the Kaleidoscope Academy handbook and I confirm my understanding of my financial responsibilities to pay for the entire unit of group lessons, Private Lessons By signing below, I acknowledge that I have read the Kaleidoscope Academy handbook and I confirm my understanding of my financial responsibilities to pay for the remainder of the unit once private lessons have begun Student signature: Date: Parent/guardian signature: Date: (if student is under 18)

11 Kaleidoscope Academy Release Form Please note: if you are reading this electronically, please print, complete, and bring this form to the first lesson I have registered the following student (or myself) for a course of instruction through the Kaleidoscope Academy. Name of student: In the event of illness and/or injury for the above named student, I authorize the faculty instructor, school personnel, Academy Director, or office staff of First Presbyterian Church of Snohomish to consent to emergency medical treatment of the above named student and to execute any documents in my name, place and stead, to accomplish this purpose. The administrators of Kaleidoscope Academy shall make all reasonable efforts to inform the emergency contact person named below, to report an illness or injury, and obtain information relative to the care and treatment of the above named student. I release my right to hold accountable First Presbyterian Church of Snohomish, Kaleidoscope Academy, and the Kaleidoscope Academy personnel for any accidental occurrence. The instructor or coordinator has permission to administer the following: Special medication (EpiPen, etc.): Note: Emergency contact information, insurance provider, policy number, preferred physician, info. were all specified at time of online registration, a copy of which will be attached to this document and kept on file for emergency use.
