The Family Medicine Residency Program and primary continuity clinic are based at St. Joseph Mercy Brighton, a modern 96,000 square foot multi-faceted outpatient facility which includes a novel 24 bed short stay center, outpatient surgery, an emergency department, a state-of-the art Cancer Center, lab & radiology services, physical therapy and rehabilitation, non-invasive vascular testing, and a number of specialty clinics. The SJML Family Medicine Residency Program now provides the ACGME designation of Osteopathic Recognition to eligible residents within the allopathic program. The Program Director is responsible for the leadership, organization, operation, and the general administration of the Residency Program. Responsibilities for this opportunity include (but are not limited to): Oversight and organization of the activities of the Residency Program at all clinical sites that participate in the program. This includes selecting and supervising the faculty and other program personnel. For each outside participating institution or

2 clinical site, the program director will appoint a local site director and monitor resident supervision. Recruitment and selection of Residents, in accordance with the policies and procedures established by the Graduate Medical Education Committee and the ACGME. Preparing an accurate statistical and narrative description of the program as requested by the ACGME. Preparing for on-site program reviews. Annually updating, both program and resident records, through the ACGME tracking system. Ensuring the implementation of fair policies, grievance procedures, and due process, as established by the Graduate Medical Education Committee, and in compliance with the ACGME requirements. Attending regular educational programs for the development of program directors and teaching faculty. Seeking prior approval from the ACGME for program curricular changes that may significantly alter the educational experience of the residents. Examples include: The addition or deletion of a participating institution. A change in the format of the educational program. A change in the approved resident complement. Designating other well-qualified faculty members to assist in the supervision and education of the residents. Developing the training schedule to meet the curricular requirements, including any outside rotations as necessary. Assuming responsibility for all clinical assignments and teaching staff appointments at participating institutions and clinical sites. The Program Director and the faculty are responsible for the preparation and implementation of a comprehensive, effective, and well-organized educational curriculum. The Program Director is responsible for organizing an effective annual program evaluation, with the Program Evaluation Committee. As part of this annual evaluation, the program must develop and effectively implement an annual program improvement plan. The Program Director and the faculty are responsible for evaluation of the resident's academic and clinical performance, including maintaining required documentation of evaluation. Assess compliance with residency competencies and skills-development requirements. The Program Director, with input from the Clinical Competence Committee, is responsible for making decisions to promote residents to the next level of training in the program and for decisions to graduate residents upon completion of the program. The Program Director is responsible for documenting completion of successful training and qualifications for each resident, as required by the ACGME. The Program Director shall work in cooperation with the IHA Family Medicine Division Head, to assure that Residents are assigned clinical responsibilities appropriate for their level of training and skill, are properly supervised in clinical assignments and are providing safe and effective patient care. The Program Director shall work in cooperation with the Director of Medical Education and other members of hospital administration to assure the effective, efficient, and fiscally responsible operation of the Residency Program. The

3 Program Director shall identify and advocate for required resources, including faculty, facilities, educational services or materials, and finances for optimal operation of the residency program. The Program Director shall participate on the Graduate Medical Education Committee as requested by the GME Committee Chair. The Program Director should demonstrate scholarly activity as evidenced by research, quality improvement projects, publication, educational presentations, and/ or active involvement on national academic committees. The Program Director is expected to regularly participate in residency didactics, clinical discussions, rounds, journal clubs, and research conferences in a manner that promotes a spirit of inquiry and scholarship. The Program Director will demonstrate support for residents' participation, as appropriate, in scholarly activities. Program Directors will work collaboratively with each other to optimize collaborative educational experiences. The selected Program Director must possess five years of clinical Family Medicine practice as well as two years of experience as a teaching, core-faculty member of an accredited Residency program. Additional requirements include Family medicine Board Certification, documented educational and administrative abilities to carry out the responsibilities of the role, and to achieve the goals and objectives of the program.
