3 1.0 PREAMBLE The Faculty of Economics and Management (FEMA) of Makerere University offers a three-year degree programme leading to the award of Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA). The programme is designed to train and equip students with the skills that suit the needs of the changing business environment. The courses offered in the programme aim at equipping students with leadership and management skills to enable its graduates to competently manage modern business enterprises with better prospects. The management of modern enterprises requires specialized competences to be more effective, efficient and competitive. The BBA programme provides opportunity for students to select from four specialized areas namely; Accounting, Marketing, Finance and Taxation. 2.0 RATIONALE FOR THE PROGRAMME The increasing competition in the business sector calls for development of a human capital base equipped with managerial competences to deal with the global trends of contemporary business. Furthermore, there is a remarkable increase in the demand of entrepreneurial skills in the wake of liberalized economies, elsewhere in developing countries. This in turn has created a need for specialists who are capable of handling the emerging challenges and opportunities. The programme integrates the academic and research rigor with professional and corporate undertakings. Students are given the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of the conceptual and practical aspects of Business Administration, which can spearhead business sustainability and excellence. 3.0 PLANS (PATHWAYS) The programme offers a fulltime day and evening mode. 4.0 PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES The overall objective of the Programme is to train and equip students with adequate knowledge, skills and attitudes that enable them to: (a) Transform into managers and administrators of organizations of all sizes, sectors and types by focusing on vital areas important for the existence and growth of these organizations. (b) Acquire a holistic view of the nature of leadership and to give experience in the result of integrated and sound policy decisions. (c) Develop, consolidate and manage business processes to ensure quality organizational performance and customer satisfaction. (d) Establish businesses that meet workplace challenges and demands of the contemporary business environment. 5.0 TARGET GROUP The Programme targets the following categories of students: a) Holders of Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or its equivalent and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or its equivalent. b) Diploma holders in relevant areas of business and management from recognized institutions. 2
4 c) Persons who shall have passed Mature Age Entrance Examinations. 6.0 GENERAL REGULATIONS Makerere University regulations pertaining to application, registration, examinations and awards shall apply. 7.0 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Admission to the Programme is done in accordance with the Makerere University entry requirements for Bachelors degrees. A candidate is eligible for admission to the Programme on meeting requirements: one of the following (1) Two principal passes in either Science or Arts subjects or its equivalent at Advanced level obtained at the same sitting Essential Relevant Desirable Others Economics and one best done of the remaining A level subjects. Second best done of the remaining A level subjects General Paper, sub- maths All others The following Grades for the A-Level subjects are used in calculating the candidates points for admission in accordance with the weighting system. (a) Principal Grade A 6 B 5 C 4 D 3 E 2 (b) Subsidiary Grade 0 1 The Points to the BBA programme shall be calculated as follows: Subject Category Weight (a) Essential 3 (b) Relevant 2 (c Desirable 1 (d) Others 0.5 (2) Must pass the University Mature Age Entry Examinations of Makerere University for the Bachelor of Business Administration. (3) Must possess a second class Diploma in relevant areas of business and management from recognized institutions. 3
5 8.0 DURATION OF THE PROGRAMME The duration of the Programme is Six (6) semesters of full time study. Each academic year consists of two (2) semesters. The length of a semester is seventeen (17) weeks of which fifteen (15) weeks are for teaching and two (2) weeks for examinations. 8.1 Programme load To be eligible for the award of the Degree of Bachelor of Business Administration the candidate must obtain credit units as follows: Year I Semester I - 19 Credit Units Semester II - 20 Credit Units Year II Semester I - 20 Credit Units Semester II - 21 Credit Units Recess Semester - 5 Credit Units Year III Semester I - 19 Credit Units Semester II - 18 Credit Units Total Credit Units 8.2 Semester load The normal semester load shall be between Credit Units per semester Contact Hours A contact hour shall be equivalent to one (1) hour of lecture or two (2) hours of tutorial /practical/field work Credit or Credit unit A credit unit is one contact hour per week per semester or a series of fifteen (15) contact hours Core Course A core course is a course which is essential to a programme and gives the programme its unique features. It is offered by all students who have registered for a particular programme. A core course has to be passed by every student who takes it Elective Course An elective course is a course offered in order to broaden a programme or to allow for specialization. An elective is selected from given groups of courses at the convenience of the student Audited Course An Audited course is a course taken by a student for which, if passed, a grade is indicated on the transcript but does not constitute the computation of the final award. 9.0 ASSESSMENT AND GRADING 9.1 Assessment of Courses a. The minimum mark required to pass is 50%; this includes coursework and final examination. Each course shall be assessed on the basis of 100 marks comprising: Course work assessment 30% Final Examination 70% 4
6 b. Course work assessment shall consist of at least one (1) Test and one (1) Homework/Take-home Assignment presentations, OR Two (2) Tests. c. Field Attachment Project There shall be a research methodology course and a Field Attachment report. Students shall be attached to organizations in the field during their Recess Semester of 2 nd year. They write a field attachment report shall be submitted at the beginning of semester I of the 3 rd year. Assessment shall be based on the conventional University format of research report and shall be marked out of 100%. A Excellent: Thorough knowledge of concepts and/or techniques together with a high degree of skill and/or some elements of originality in satisfying the requirements of an Assignment or course. f. B+ Very Good: Thorough knowledge of concepts and/or techniques together with fairly high degree of skills in the use of those concepts/techniques in satisfying the requirements of an Assignment or course. g. B Good: Good level of knowledge of concepts and/or techniques together with considerable in using them to satisfy the requirements of an Assignment or course. h. C+ Fairly Good 5

C Fair: Acceptable level of knowledge of concepts and/or techniques together with some in using them to satisfy the requirements of an Assignment or course. j. D+ Pass: Slightly better than minimum knowledge of required concepts and/or techniques together with some ability to use them in satisfying the requirements of an Assignment or course. k. D Marginal Pass: Minimum knowledge of concepts and/or techniques needed to satisfy the requirements of an Assignment or course. l. E Marginal Fail: m. F Fail: 9.2 The course pass grade point per course is 2.0, that is 50% 9.3 Progression Progression of a student shall be classified as Normal or Probationary Normal progression: Normal Progression shall occur when a student has passed all the specified Core Courses and obtained the CGPA of 2.0 or above Probationary Progression (i) Probation is based on the CGPA: A student will be placed on probationary progress when he/she obtains a CGPA of less than 2.0 (ii) Probation on failing a Core Course A student who fails a Course shall be placed on probation Certificate of Due Performance A student who does not have coursework marks shall be denied Certificate of Due Performance and will not be allowed to sit the University Examinations. 9.4 Discontinuation When a student accumulates three consecutive probations based on the CGPAs of less than 2.0 or failing a Core Course (s), three times, he/she shall be discontinued. 6
8 9.5 Withdrawal from the Programme/Course(s) A registered student may choose to withdraw from a Programme/Course(s) for various reasons. A student could withdraw from a Programme/Course(s) not later than three weeks after the commencement of the Programme/Course(s) and shall be allowed a maximum of two (2) withdrawals in an Academic Programme and each withdrawal shall be a maximum of one academic year only. 9.6 Retaking a Course (a) A student may re-take any course when it is offered again in order to: - i. Pass it if she/he had failed it before ii. Improve the grade ( with permission) if the first pass grade was low (b) While retaking a course, the student shall:- i. Attend all the prescribed lectures/tutorials/practicals/fieldwork in the Course or Courses. ii. Retake both the coursework and the examination. Whenever a course(s) has been retaken, the academic transcript shall indicate so accordingly. iii. A student shall not be allowed to accumulate more than (5) Retake Courses at a time AWARD AND CLASSIFICATION On successful completion of the Programme candidates shall be awarded a degree of Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) Classification of the Degree The Degree shall be classified according to the CGPA as follows: CLASS CGPA First Class Second Class Upper Division Second Class Lower division Pass Obtaining the cumulative point Average (CGPA) shall involve; a. Multiplying the Grade Point Average (GPA) obtained in each course by the credit units assigned to the course to arrive at the weighted score for the course. b. Adding together the weighted scores for all the courses taken up to that time. c. Dividing the total weighted score by the total number of credit units taken up to that time RESOURCES 11.1 Staffing The Programme is managed and administered by qualified and staff from the Faculty of Economics and Management. The faculty also engages staff from other academic units in the university and elsewhere, in form of guest speakers and visiting lecturers. 7
9 11.2 Facilities The Programme largely depends on the already existing infrastructure and scholastic materials available at the University. The University Library and other institutional and academic Libraries within and outside the university are also used Space Lecture rooms and office space in the Faculty of Economics and Management is utilized Funding Tuition fees and other charges are determined by the university council QUALITY ASSURANCE The student Examinations and results are executed in time, and feed back communicated to the students. Regular meetings are conducted to get feed back from students on the progress and management of the programme. Students representatives have regular interface with the course coordinators, heads of departments and the Dean of the Faculty on all issues relating to the programme. The students representatives are members of the faculty board, where they share and get feed back on all matters pertaining to the course PROGRAMME STRUCTURE: Details of the Programme structure are specified below where CH, and CU represent Contact Hours and Credit Units respectively, 1 Credit Unit is equivalent to 1 Contact Hour. LH for lecture hours, TH for tutorials, PH for practical. 8
