AUIS MUM 7 REASONS TO STUDY INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE AUIS MUM A FOUR YEAR MD-MS PROGRAM OFFERED CONCURRENTLY BY TWO UNIVERSITIES American University of Integrative Sciences St. Maarten School of Medicine in collaboration with Maharishi University of Management and

MD and MS A four year program offered concurrently by two universities. v American University of Integrative Sciences St. Maarten School of Medicine (AUIS) is pleased to announce an innovative and exciting new collaboration with Maharishi University of Management (MUM) which includes a concurrent Masters Degree level class with a subcurriculum in Integrative Medicine. Students in this program will earn a dual degree during the four-year program: a conventional MD with a concurrent MS in Integrative Medicine. The combination of Integrative Medicine explores all areas of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) including Ayurveda. Evidence-based health interventions are taught in conjunction with methods for improving health and health care. Focus is placed on techniques approved by the NCCIH. NCCIH is the Federal Government s lead agency for scientific research on complementary and integrative health approaches. 2 3

YOU DON T have to pick between conventional and alternative medicine. 1. COMBINE THE BEST OF BOTH APPROACHES TO MEDICINE AND HEALTH The great advantage of integrative medicine is that you don t have to pick between conventional and alternative medicine. Integrative medicine seeks to combine the best practices of conventional medicine along with traditional, natural and preventive modalities to help patients achieve optimal health and wellness. This will allow you, as an integrative medicine physician, to facilitate your patient s innate healing response to restore their mind/body/spirit to its natural state of wellness, with the least harmful side effects. This will make you a more effective and sought-after doctor. 2. PRACTICE PREVENTION You will learn not only how to treat disease, but how to prevent it. Typically medical students are trained to treat disease once it has manifested, to put out fires and treat the patient only after they become sick. As an integrative medicine doctor, you will be looking at the body s systems as a whole and be skilled in identifying the underlying root causes of the imbalance, often before that leads to disease or even symptoms. 3. FOCUS ON THE WHOLE PERSON Human beings are more than just the physical body. Integrative Medicine is scientific, and sophisticated. It takes the whole person into account, diagnosing and treating the patient s state of mind, spirit, body, diet, lifestyle, environment, and more. This more thorough approach to medicine is comprehensive and tailored uniquely to each individual, creating wellness at a deeply restorative level for the patient in every aspect of life. The AUIS/MUM approach is prevention-oriented. It combines modern medical, diagnostic and treatment methods with evidence-based, approved integrative techniques. 4 5

4. STAND OUT WHEN APPLYING FOR RESIDENCIES By adding the MS in Integrative Medicine to your MD credentials, you will be an exceptional applicant for your medical residency. With the added knowledge and skills, you ll have something more to offer your future patients that most MD graduates will not have. Many academic and private hospitals are exploring ways to incorporate natural health modalities into their existing protocols for chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, chronic pain, and stress-related disorders. In fact, a recent McKinsey & Company survey found that 41% of patients look for hospitals that offer complementary and alternative medicine programs as part of their leading edge medical care. In response, residences are searching for uniquely qualified medical graduates to staff their hospitals and clinics to help them meet their patients evolving needs for total health care. As a physician skilled in traditional and integrative medicine, you will be in demand by offering preventive, personalized plans for patient health. Prevention is the medicine of the future. 5. PARTNER WITH YOUR PATIENT The doctor-patient relationship is a key component of integrative medicine. This special bond is satisfying for both the doctor and the patient. Patients are increasingly interested in self-care becoming empowered to take responsibility for their actions and make and/or keep themselves healthy. To be a successful doctor who offers more, you have to be able to keep your patients healthy and self-sufficient, rather than just fix them when they aren t. With this MD MS dual degree program, you and your patients will be able make the best choices on what is most effective and useful for them. 41% OF PATIENTS look for hospitals that have complementary and alternative medicine offerings. 6 7

6. BE IN DEMAND There is a growing demand for integrative medicine physicians. According to the American Hospital Association, hospitals in the US offering integrative approaches doubled from only 8.6% in 1998 to 20% in Currently, more than one third of US hospitals now offer integrative health care services. According to US News: As the American healthcare system grows progressively stressed and truly patient-centered care becomes increasingly difficult to find, more people than ever before are looking for alternatives to the conventional healthcare model. As the American Healthcare system grows progressively stressed and truly patientcentered care becomes increasingly difficult to find, more people than ever before are looking for alternatives to the conventional healthcare model -US News 7. LEARN SELF-CARE PRACTICES The MD MS track provides an opportunity for students to personally practice what they learn. This unique educational program incorporates a wellness and stress reduction program, allowing our future doctors to practice what they preach, and be a model for their patients. 8 9

MESSAGE FROM AUIS PRESIDENT The versatile and modern MD course curriculum is offered by highly qualified and experienced medical educators and is supported by talented and approachable staff. The program gives our students a solid education in modern medicine reinforced with complementary and integrative approaches, with a focus on preventive rather than reactive patient care. The combination of the MD and MS offers students added visibility and a better candidacy when applying for Medical Residency Match. DR. RENU AGNIHOTRI To study medicine is more than just a career choice. It is an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of people. The American University of Integrative Sciences, St. Maarten School of Medicine, (AUIS) offers a four-year MD program with a unique Integrative Medicine sub-curriculum. AUIS has partnered with Maharishi University of Management, a regionally accredited US university and a leader in Integrative Medicine (IM), to offer this cutting edge coursework. This unique affiliation allows our students to graduate with both MD and MS in Integrative Medicine degrees. The Integrative Medicine sub-curriculum includes instruction and experiential learning of evidence-based complementary and integrative approaches to patient-centric medical care and preventative health services. The Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield Iowa (USA) offers a Bachelor of Science in Pre-Medical Studies. The AUIS-MUM partnership offers a 7-year High School to Residency program for talented high school graduates. International applicants are encouraged to apply. Our students study medicine in a non-traditional environment with a special focus on community service, evidence-based integrative strategies, and the business of medicine. This approach is reinforced by the 11:1 ratio of students to professor. The ASSIST program insures that students have the academic support needed to be successful in their studies. AUIS is well known for its Clinical Clerkship program which boasts 60+ hospital affiliations in 20 states, Canada, and globally. There is NO waiting period to begin clerkships upon receipt of a passing score on the USMLE Step I. Many students transfer to AUIS due to the reputation of the Clinical Department. As an AUIS graduate you will be part of the future of medicine by combining allopathic and integrative medicine using state-of-art technology while in school as preparation for use in your practices. Prevention is the future of medicine. AUIS graduates are on the cutting edge. Welcome, Future Doctors! As AUIS graduates, YOU are the future of medicine!

MESSAGE FROM THE MUM DEAN There are many compelling reasons to become an Integrative Medicine physician. More than ever, patients today and in the future will demand a personalized, preventive, and holistic approach to their medical care that minimizes harmful side effects and maximizes mind and body health while curing disease. DR. ROBERT SCHNEIDER, MD, FACC Dr. Robert Schneider is an internationally renowned physician-researchereducator and leader in evidence-based integrative medicine.
