1 PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Pre-Collegiate Programs at the University of Colorado Denver, are academic enrichment and support programs designed to motivate first-generation college bound students (neither of whose natural or adoptive parent(s) received a baccalaureate degree) to graduate from high school successfully, complete a college preparatory curriculum, and pursue a college education. The Downtown Campus Program The Pre-Collegiate Development Program (PCDP) will offer students, in grades 9 through 11, the opportunity to engage in a wide range of pre-college activities throughout the academic year. The academic year component will offer monthly Saturday Academies consisting of the college process access, college entrance examination preparation, study skills workshops, and career orientation workshops. The Anschutz Medical Campus Program The Pre-Collegiate Health Careers Program (PCHCP) will offer students, in grades 10 through 11, the opportunity to engage in a wide range of pre-college activities throughout the academic year. The academic year component will offer monthly Saturday Academies consisting of health career workshops, college entrance examination preparation, study skills workshops, class selection, tutoring and a variety of cultural enrichment experiences. In addition, sophomores will participate in a two-week summer academic session on campus from June 16 through June 27, The Downtown Campus session will consist of college preparation seminar, ethnic literature, ACT English prep, ACT math prep, and computer skills. The Anschutz Campus session will consist of college preparation seminar, health career options, Leadership, and Pharmacy. Juniors will participate in a five-week summer academic session to be held on the respective campus (Downtown or Anschutz Campus), June 16 through July 18, This session will consist of accelerated high school classes such as mathematics and sciences, a senior seminar, and a three-credit college English course. Note: Summer session consists of all-day activities, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. five days per week, for two and five weeks respectively. The Pre-Collegiate Programs have been established to provide assistance to students throughout their high school years, so that they will be adequately prepared to enter the college of their choice when they graduate. Therefore, students selected to participate in the Program will be expected to remain active participants throughout their high school years. SERVICES AND ACTIVITIES: Monthly Saturday Academies: On one Saturday of each month, students will participate in academies held on their respective campuses. These academies will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and all students will be required to attend. Round trip RTD bus fare and lunch will be provided to participants by the Program. Eligibility - The student selection criteria are as follows: Students MUST: 1) attend a target high school; 2) be a first-generation college bound student (neither of whose natural or adoptive parent(s) received a baccalaureate degree); and
2 3) have a minimum of a 2.5 Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) for the Downtown Program and a 3.0 GPA for the Anschutz Medical Program. Freshmen who have not yet acquired a GPA, but meet the other criteria are encouraged to apply. In addition, the student MUST also meet one or more of the following requirements: 1) be a member of a one parent family; 2) be the eldest in the family; or 3) have a desire to continue her/his education beyond high school after graduation. B. Participant Responsibilities The Pre-Collegiate Programs are committed to providing their students every opportunity to develop their academic skills, succeed in high school, and gain entrance into an institution of higher education. However, students will gain the benefit from their experiences and fulfill their educational potential only to the extent that they commit themselves to the goals of the Programs and actively participate in its activities. Therefore, the Programs will expect their participants to: 1) commit themselves to active participation in the Programs for the duration of their high school years; 2) attend and involve themselves fully in all program-sponsored activities (10 th and 11 th graders, includes the two-week and five-week summer program on campus); 3) follow a college preparatory curriculum as prescribed by the Programs staff and high school counselor; and 4) cooperate with the Programs staff in all program-related matters. C. Application Procedures Students desiring to participate in one of the Programs are asked to apply through their high school liaison. The high school liaison must submit the following materials/credentials for each student applicant: 1) Pre-Collegiate General Information Application Form; 2) Pre-Collegiate Counselor Recommendation Form; 3) Two Teacher Recommendation Form from academic teachers such as mathematics, sciences, English, social studies, or foreign language; 4) An unofficial copy of the student's high school transcript; and ADDITIONAL INFORMATION CAN BE OBTAINED BY CONTACTING ONE OF THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMS: PCDP Pre-Collegiate Development Program University of Colorado Denver Attention: Greg Lee, Associate Director Campus Box 147, P.O.
