2 Program Information Western Reserve Academy s English Language Institute (ELI) is for students ages for whom English is not their native language. The program is designed for students who have been admitted to an American independent school and want to utilize their summer to get ready, and for students who are considering applying to U.S. independent schools in the future and want to improve their language skills. It serves intermediate and advanced English as a Second Language students students who have studied English for two to three years. ELI embodies WRA s mission to offer a transformational experience where students strive for excellence, live with integrity and act with compassion. Curriculum Western Reserve Academy is a dynamic and supportive coed boarding school for students in grades We have been committed to excellence, integrity and compassion since I could really see and hear a huge difference in her English speaking abilitites. - parent of ELI graduate ELI provides a thorough education of the English language and advanced understanding and experience of American culture. Key areas of emphasis include: Advanced vocabulary building and reading comprehension Writing and reading development including writing research papers and lab reports Testing and study skills including how to use a graphing calculator American social skills including how to make friends, ask for help and find leadership opportunities Conversational English Independent school preparation including TOEFL prep and how to behave in a classroom Program participants experience American boarding school life by engaging in a wide variety of activities, both inside and outside of the classroom.

3 The WRA Difference Preparation for Independent School Western Reserve Academy is proud to host a uniquely designed and crafted program for English as a Second Language students. ELI is very supportive and very equipped to prepare students for what lies ahead in their academic pursuits at American independent schools. WEEKLY ACADEMIC WORKSHOPS Each week, ELI students attend sessions to help them acclimate to the demands of different subject areas. Students will learn how to write research papers, learn classroom norms, how to seek leadership opportunities, organize lab reports, and other study skills necessary to succeed at independent high schools in the United States. In each laboratory experiment, students will physically manipulate equipment and materials in order to make relevant observations and collect data. The student will then use the collected data to form conclusions, verify hypotheses, communicate results, as well as writing a preliminary lab report. Upon completion of the summer program students should be able to think independently and critically about chemistry issues and to make predictions based on observations in a laboratory setting. LIFE AS AN AMERICAN STUDENT Every week, students participate in weekly seminars designed to help introduce life as a high school student in the United States. These seminars are led by WRA graduates, current college students and faculty, who have experienced these practicums firsthand. Upon their completion of their time at ELI, our students leave with the experience and familiarity with American culture to feel acclimated and prepared for life as a student in the United States. 4 Healthcare WRA has a fully equipped health center located on campus. The school s physician has office hours throughout the week and a registered nurse is on call. Program participants always have full access to healthcare professionals. In the event of an emergency, local hospitals are very close to campus. The safety and well-being of all students is always our top priority. Tuition Information The all-inclusive cost for the four-week program is $7,800. This amount covers tuition, room and board, textbooks, transportation between the airport and campus, all trips and activities, student health insurance, and bed linens and towels. Students need only to bring personal spending money. Application Process Students are encouraged to apply early, as space is limited. A non-refundable application fee of $100 is due with each application. The English Language Institute Admission Committee will review and decide on each application as it is received. Within two weeks of official notification of acceptance, a non-refundable deposit of $2,000 is required to hold a student s place in the program. The remainder of the tuition payment is due no later than June 16, 2017.
