1 MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING at Lake Michigan College Revised May 2016 lakemichigancollege.edu/mri
2 Why Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) at LMC? Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Career Opportunities Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a diagnostic modality that uses high-definition, three-dimensional pictures of organs and tissues inside the body. MRI Scanners use powerful magnetic fields, radio waves, and computers to create high-resolution images of the structure and function of the body. MRI technologists are highly-trained and possess scientific and technical expertise for competent practice. They demonstrate the ability to critically think and effectively communicate with patients as well as with other medical professionals. MRI technologists operate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners, monitor patient safety and comfort, explain the MRI procedures, conduct quality control, and maintain patient records. Program Accreditation The Certificate and Associate in Applied Science MRI programs are approved by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT), 20 N. Wacker Drive, Suite 2850, Chicago, IL The JRCERT phone number is The web site is The MRI program is designed not only to foster the skills and knowledge necessary for competent practice in MRI, but also places emphasis on professional attitudes, values and behaviors that encourage the professional growth of the individual student. Clinical learning experiences are provided by affiliating hospitals, clinics, and other MRI provider facilities. Didactic learning occurs in supportive college course work delivered online. The structured curriculum is designed in accordance with the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT), the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT), the American College of Radiology (ACR), the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT), and the Michigan Radiologic and Imaging Science (MiRIS) Consortium. Qualified MRI Technologists employ their knowledge to provide medical imaging services at hospitals, physicians' offices, imaging centers, and mobile MRI imaging companies for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment of diseases. MRI Technologists can serve in other capacities such as: Departmental managers Technical advisors and application specialists Sales and service for manufacturers Educators What is so exciting about Magnetic Resonance Imaging? Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) shows extremely fine detail of human tissue without the use of ionizing radiation. The principle of Magnetic Resonance Imaging is based on measuring signals emitted from excited hydrogen nuclei in response to radio waves that have the same frequency as the nuclei themselves. The magnets used during a magnetic resonance imaging are 30,000 times stronger than the earth s magnetic field. Since the hydrogen atom is the most abundant element in the human body, the hydrogen nuclei (proton) is utilized for most medical purposes to produce MRI images. Employment Outlook MRI falls within the category of Radiologic Technologist/Technician on the USDOL website. Employment is expected to grow 21% through 2022, faster than average for all occupations. As the population grows and ages, the demand increases for diagnostic imaging. Hospitals will remain principal employer. Jobs are also available in outpatient diagnostic imaging centers Job openings will arise from the need to replace technologists who leave the occupation. Revised 05/01/2017 2

4 The MRI Application Process A student will receive an acknowledgement upon receipt of their MRI Application. All prerequisites must be completed before an applicant can be considered for the MRI program. All eligible applicants academic records are evaluated by using a numerical point system. Entry into the MRI program is competitive and based on total points. Students who are not accepted into the MRI program will be required to submit another MRI Application if they want to be reconsidered for the MRI program for the next academic year. The number of students admitted into the MRI program each year is determined by the availability of clinical sites. Students must inform Lake Michigan College of changes in address or telephone numbers. If the Health Sciences office is unable to contact a student related to placement into the MRI program, a student may have to forgo placement that year after reasonable attempts have been made to contact the student. Selection for Admission into the MRI Program All eligible students will be ranked via a point system and selected based upon a competitive process ranking them according to their GPA in the prerequisite courses: MATH 122/123, BIOL 205, PHSC 101, ENG 101, HEAL 103/READ 110 and PSYC 201. The students cumulative GPA will also be ranked using a point system. Should two individuals qualify for the same seat, the cumulative GPA listed on the transcript will determine the ranking. Upon Admittance All accepted MRI students will be informed of a program orientation, which is mandatory to attend once a student has accepted their seat in the program. The orientation date is in the spring semester prior to the summer start of the program. The orientation date will be announced in the acceptance letter.
