Cities that are sustainable and just make it possible for everyone to have clean air and water, reliable and non-polluting transportation, jobs with wages to improve quality of life, open spaces, and affordable healthy food, all while reducing the city's ecological footprint. SOCI 3833 Killing of African Americans (Noel Cazenave): is course examines highly racialized police and vigilante violence as one of many racial control systems and mechanisms that have been used to subordinate and contain African Americans and other racially oppressed people throughout American history. ECON 2431 Economics of Taxation and Government Spending (Steve Ross): is course focuses on the structure of government public spending and revenue raising programs. Considers health, retirement, anti-poverty, education, as well as different tax systems such as the private and corporate income taxes. e course begins by covering the basic economic concepts and tools that are used to consider public policy questions and follows this core material with detailed analysis of a series of important public policy topics. URBN 3998.H71 / PP 5397.H72 - Children in the City (Edith Barrett): Growing up in the city has its challenges and its rewards. Children need safe places to play, quality schools, access to healthy and affordable food, as well as protection from the dangers of urban living. In this seminar-style course, we will address the unique experience of an urban childhood, from birth through the teenage years, and explore the public policies that affect their lives. Students may be engaged in a community-based project around the themes of the course. Storrs Campus GEOG Race, Sex, Space, and Place (Dasgupta) RELATED COURSE: Focuses on cities, sexualities, and race relations through a study of racial segregation in American cities; emergence of gay neighborhoods; globalization; migration; and human rights.
