1 NEP/15 Educational Psychology Fall 2016 Message from the President p. 2 Executive Committee Meeting Highlights p. 5 Calls for 2017 APA Convention p. 6 Award Announcements p. 7 A Look Back at the 2016 APA Convention p. 10 Edited by David Morris

2 2 Message from the President This message as President of APA Division 15 gives me an opportunity to reflect on our rich past, recent directions and challenges, and how we might maximize our impact on the field moving forward. To this effect, I ve recently spent some time in NEP s archive, reading many of my predecessors messages, minutes, and interviews. Interestingly, these entries in tandem with the Handbook of Educational Psychology provide an informative context for much of the work I am doing today. First, however, I want to thank 2016 Co-Chairs, Michelle Buehl and Helenrose Fives, and our Past President, Nancy Perry, for a successful Division 15 Program at the APA Convention in Denver. The event was well attended and included many engaging sessions. In the summer issue of NEP, I introduced my presidential theme, W.E.L.C.O.M.E. This theme is reflected in the call for convention proposals from Pui-Wa Lei and Kay Wijekumar, our 2017 program co-chairs: Welcoming and Advancing Research in Educational Psychology: Impacting Learners, Teachers, and Schools. As you consider outlets for your research this year, please note that convention submissions are welcome that relate to this theme and other topics in educational psychology. Additionally, in order to provide Division 15 with more program hours and outreach, our program co-chairs have been working closely with other divisions in advance of the recent collaborative proposal deadline. And a collaborative proposal initiated by these cochairs integrates themes of my presidency with those of our recent past presidents: Terri Thorkildsen ( Achieving More With Others ), Karen Harris ( Impacting Education Pre-K to Gray ), and Nancy Perry ( Productive Partnerships ). The proposed symposium, involving scholars from Divisions 15, 16, and 20, focuses on fostering cognitive resilience through lifelong strategic reading, writing, and living. Submitted also were two other symposia initiated in the Division, along with 10 other collaborative proposals. Important Division 15 deadlines related to the 2017 APA Annual Convention in Washington, D.C., August 3-6 (Thursday Sunday) include: December 1, 2016 (5:00 p.m. ET): member/ non-member submissions (submitted online via the APA Call for Convention Proposals website) December 15, 2016 (11:59 p.m. ET): submissions for Graduate Student Poster Awards March 17, 2017 (5:00 p.m. ET): submissions for the International Student Research Award In reading past NEP issues and reflecting on my own experience with Division 15 across over 40 years, I am impressed by our steady stream of dedicated volunteers. We currently have 17 active committees, plus a group of APA representatives, monitors, and liaisons. These committee members perform important tasks, such as nominating new fellows (deadline: December 1, 2016, 11:59 p.m. ET) selecting award winners, monitoring long-term investments, planning webinars, recruiting members, crafting publications, engaging in international outreach, and mentoring graduate students and early career faculty (deadline for Early Career Research Grants: June 2, 2017, 11:59 p.m. ET). To provide structure to these efforts, the Executive Committee elected by you works hard to develop budgets, policy, and planning for the future. Per a recent member vote for change of our Bylaws, next spring we will start a 4-year presidential line instead of the current 3-year presidential line (president-elect, president, past-president). In doing so, we will reduce one of three members-at-large to maintain our current budget. As such, the Spring 2017 ballot will include votes for a

3 3 vice-president, president-elect, secretary, and treasurer. Nominations (including selfnominations) for these positions can be sent to Nancy Perry, the chair of the nominations committee, by January 29, 2017, 11:59 p.m. ET. Please also see the call on page four to nominate co-editors for the fourth edition of the Handbook of Educational Psychology. In the last five years, we have seen growth in membership (now about 2000 members), growth in the number of our committees (and resultant scope of our outreach and activities), new initatives by Wade George, and changes to 3-year treasurer and 4-year presidential lines. Our financial stability and membership trends are positive and envied by many other divisions many of which have not been able to successfully duplicate our growth. Foresight from past Division 15 leaders using surveys and discussions about increasing the value of membership and resultant actions have helped us achieve these results. This year, new communication efforts will work toward launching podcasts for outreach, professional development, and possible supplements to members teaching resources. Furthermore, our initial webinars in 2015 and 2016 were successful (see Division 15 s video archive for recordings), and the Webinar Committee has plans for two webinars in the near future. Also, look for our new outreach with Educational Psychology Ambassadors. This effort will be launched and mentored in a collaboration between Wade George, the Membership Committee, the Graduate Student Affairs Committee, and the Committee on the Development of Early Career Educational Psychologists. Due to recent and upcoming changes in the 4-year presidential line, I see my most important role as president as supporting and maintaining our vibrant range of committees. I was thrilled by the acceptance of volunteers from all career stages in my recent outreach, as well as the work already underway for the year ahead. The new committee chairs were announced in my message in the Summer 2016 NEP, but Dr. Serena Shim has since filled a recent need for a new chair of the Membership Committee. Wade George is collaborating with the Membership Committee on outreach opportunities for graduate students and early career members alike. I am enthusiastic and optimistic about the continued viability and growth of Division 15. The mix of members, from graduate students to researchers late in their careers, strengthens Division 15 s joint committee work and collaborative research. As always, a jewel and benefit of Division 15 is our proprietary journal, Educational Psychologist. This journal is a wonderful outlet for reviews of research, scholarly essays, critiques, and theoretical or conceptual work to promote all aspects of educational psychology (rather than questions, methods, and findings from one or two empirical studies). The current editor, Kathryn Wentzel, reports that Educational Psychologist ranks first out of 230 journals in "Education & Educational Research," and the Thomson Reuters Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Journal Citation Report for 2015 ranks Educational Psychologist first out of 57 journals in Psychology, Educational (Social Science) with the 2015 two-year impact factor of As such, we would all do well to encourage colleagues and graduate students to read and write for the Division s journal. For outreach, also consider writing a piece for our Psychology Today blog. To conclude, I am enthusiastic and optimistic about the continued viability and growth of Division 15. Members vary in focus regarding human learning and understanding; policy, practice, and research; and methods of inquiry or measurement; but all are welcome. We have little of importance to say unless we have a strong research base, and thus, I see its overarching priority. However, we should not

4 4 overlook certain areas of research in educational psychology (skipping, perhaps, further work with Thorndike s puzzle box for cats). Also, members can vary in focus, professional passions, and methods over the course of their careers. The mix of members, from graduate students to researchers late in their careers, strengthens Division 15 s joint committee work and collaborative research. Bonnie J. F. Meyer APA Division 15 President The Publications Committee of Division 15 is seeking nominations for editors for the fourth edition of the Division s Handbook of Educational Psychology. Although there are several educational psychology handbooks available, the Division 15 Handbook has long been considered the go to handbook in the field of educational psychology. We are seeking nominations (including self-nominations) to serve as editors for the next edition. We seek applications both from individual scholars, as well as teams. Responsibilities of the editors include the following: Appointing an advisory board, and consulting with the board on potential chapters for the fourth edition. Establishing a timeline for production of the Handbook. Inviting leading scholars in the field to contribute chapters. Obtaining critical developmental reviews for each chapter. Providing extensive feedback to authors on initial drafts. Providing subsequent feedback as authors produce final products. Working closely with the publisher on production. The Handbook will probably be published in As in the past, the Division seeks to appoint the editors soon, so that they can have time at the front end to assess developments in the field, and to seek appropriate chapters. Potential editors are encouraged to submit a letter of interest and a CV to: Eric Anderman, Chair of Division 15 Publications Committee, at anderman.1@osu.edu. Review of applications will begin on January 1, The new editor(s) will be appointed from 2017 through the publication of the 4th edition.
