EXECUTIVE SUMMARY CRITERION I: CURRICULAR ASPECT 1.1 Curriculum Planning, Design and Development Dr.D.Y.Patil Homoeopathic Medical College and Research Centre, Pune is recognized by Central Council of Homoeopathy (CCH) and is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences(MUHS). The institution implements and follows the curriculum and syllabus as prescribed by the CCH and MUHS. The institution offers the following U.G. and P.G. programme through its 12 departments: U. G. Programme i.e. B.H.M.S. comprising of 12 subjects P.G. Programme i.e. MD (Hom.) in 3 subjects namely Homoeopathic MateriaMedica, Organon of Medicine and Repertory. Curriculum of both U.G and P.G courses is implemented effectively in the following manner: The institutionn orients the staff towards the curriculum framework and syllabus and all the departments are provided with the copies of the same. Each department lays down a teaching plan on yearly basiss based on their syllabus. The teaching faculty regularly interacts with the academic committee of the college to make both theory & clinical timetable in order to implement their departmental programme. On receiving notification from the statutory bodies regarding suggestions for CDD, the Principal of the institution notifies all the departments of the same & any changes & suggestions for change in syllabus are discussed & forwarded through the Principal to be discussed in the Board of Studies & Faculty meeting at MUHS.. The staff attends workshops of MUHS, regarding revision of syllabus & of exam pattern & gives their valuable suggestions. The Principal of the college is involved in curriculum design, development and revision of curriculum as member of Board of Studies& Faculty of Homoeopathy MUHS, Nashik and Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences The faculty members of each department based on their experience, discussion with peers and feedback from students and alumni, suggest modifications in existing curriculum periodically according to the needs of stakeholders. Innovations in Teaching Learning methods are implemented for curriculum enrichment. It ensures best academic environment and facilities to the students for hands on training and development of various skills leading to development of competent health professionals. The institute implements the curriculum to meet the needs of all stakeholders as well as the community while giving importance to areas of research in Homoeopathy. The institution integrates horizontal and vertical teaching in its curriculum. 7

9 1.2 Academic Flexibility The institution offers the following U.G. and P.G. programme through its 12 departments: U. G. Programme i.e. B.H.M.S. comprising of 12 subjects P.G. Programme i.e. MD (Hom.) in 3 subjects namely Homoeopathic Materia Medica, Organon of Medicine and Repertory. The institutionn bridges the gap between students who pass their 10+2 science and BHMS course by holding Orientation program for all students who join the first BHMS. All departments concerned with the teaching of first BHMS students conduct special orientation and introduction lectures to bridge science stream and Homoeopathic medical science. Special classess in the local language especially for outer state students & English language classes for students who are not proficient in English language. 1.3 Curriculum, Enrichment Though the institution follows the curriculum and syllabus as prescribed by the Central Council of Homoeopathy and MUHS, the curriculum is enriched by variety of enrichment/ training programmes like workshops, seminars, guest lecturers for both teaching staff and studentss The institutionn conducts various NSS activities, Medical & Health check up camp in which the students of the institution actively participate. The students of the institution take active part in Celebration of World Health Day, Women s Day, Vaccination Drive, Tree Plantation & other activities related to National Health Programmes. The department of community medicine actively facilitates students participation in all above activities to inculcate moral values in students. Other enrichment programme for students include personality development and communication skills, yoga, meditation, Basic life support 1.4 Feedback System Feedback is taken from various stakeholders like students, interns, alumni etc. on the basis of Questionnaire designed. The institutionn has committees for feedback analysis which analyzes the feedback & various inputs are incorporated by each department to enrich curriculum and teaching learning methods CRITERION II: TEACHING LEARNING AND EVALUATION 2.1 Student Enrolment and Profile The college has systematic admission process, and offers admission to UG, PG courses as per permission/affiliation by MUHS and CCH. Admission is strictly on merit basis of Maharashtra Common Entrance Test(MHCET) conducted by Directorate of Medical Education & Research(DMER), Mumbai for UG course on merit basis of Association 8

10 Post Graduate Homoeopathy Common Entrance Test(Asso-PGH-CET) conducted by Association of Management of Homoeopathic Medical Colleges of Maharashtra( AMHMCM)1 for PG courses. Admission Brochures and Application forms are available online on websites of the Associations or in specified centres situated all over Maharashtra. The Brochure contains all information related to Rules and Regulations for admission, Reservation of seats Open, Reserved Category& Management), Eligibility, syllabus, Exam process, Admission process and fee structure. Strict transparency is maintained during the entire admission process. Wide publicity is ensured through advertisements in newspapers, college brochure, college website, other websites such as mouth-to-mouth publicity by Alumni of the college, notification to DMER etc. Strategies adopted to increase / improve access for studentss belonging to special categories: The institutionn has a student centric approach. Admission of different quotas like women s quota, sport s quota, minority quota is done strictly as per the guidelines of DMER. Admission based on merit Our college has many facilities such as hostel facility available for women, various committees such as Anti-ragging, Grievance redressal committees etc, Ramps along with 2 automatic lifts for disabled, excellent infrastructure, experienced and qualified staff etc, all of such features contributing to quality education, security of students, and overall personality development of students. All such positive aspects attract students from all over the country. College ensures quality education, security of women, hostel, mentorship & opportunities for overall professional & personality development of students. Thesee attract students from all over the country. 2.2 Catering to Student Diversity Differential requirements of students are identified during:, Orientation cum induction program, Day-to-Day interaction, Examinations. Student diversity is significantly observed which gives rise to multiple issues such as language problem, Adaptation problems, change in culture, socio-economicc background, Academic problems, Health related problems such as nutrition deficiencies. All these issues are dealt by implementation of various strategies such as remedial coaching, tutorials, setting up Language Lab, Computer Lab, Mentor- Mentee system, appointing a counselor to look after various mental health issues, and slow learners. Fast learners are encouraged to deliver seminars and submit assignments Conducting Extra lectures, tutorials, assignments, revision sessions, small group discussions, for students gives a boost up to their morale and improves their academic performance. Extension activities such Seminars, workshops, special lectures on 9

11 personality development are arranged to inculcate a positive attitude in students. Celebration of important days like Independence Day, Republic Day, Teacher s Day, World Health Day, World Homoeopathy Day etc. also helps in arousing awareness between students towards social welfare. Students actively participate in promotional activities like blood donation camps, tree plantation, rallies for social cause. The institutionn has adopted the principles of life style modification for students. Importance of Yoga is stressed upon and students are encouraged to undertake yoga classes daily. For this, collaboration has been made with Dr. D.Y. Patil College of Ayurveda, Pune to involve our students in practice of yoga. Motivational talks, special lectures are arranged for the students involving external experts to boost up their moral and ethical values. Values for becoming excellent doctors for the service of the society like compassion, love, respect are stressed upon. Special classes like Art of Living are arranged for students to inculcate a true essence of compassion and belief. 2.3 Teaching-Learning Process The institution has as a well-articulated vision and mission statement, well defined goals and objectives, which are displayed on the website as well as in the college brochure and handbook, which is given to each and every student. Planning and organizing the teaching-learning and evaluation schedules by - Academic Calendar, Master Plan, Teaching Plan, Rotation Plan, Time Table etc. The implementation of the process is discussed in the intradepartmental and interdepartmental meetings. The schedule and methodology of the teaching-learning process and details of timetable, teacher in-charge are made known to all the students at the start of the academic session (notice board) and also by the class teachers in their introductory classes. The Institute has adopted student-centric approach which is reflected following teaching methodologies: Use of museums with specimens, models and description catalogues, computer assisted learning, ward rounds, bed side learning,group discussion, clinics case study, micro teaching, integrated teaching, clinical meetings, quiz, PBL, OSCE, project based learning, guest lectures, seminars, e-learning etc. The college has also taken various steps to ensure progress of teaching methodology from a traditional to a e-learning one by initiating steps such as furnishing each department in college with PC and LCD, and internet connection through WiFi and broadband, collection of videos and educational CDs Homoeopathic software are already made available for teachers and students, The institute also strives to ensure development and nurture of 10

12 scientific temperament by organization of research methodology workshops, seminars, workshops and conferences on recent advances and lectures by experts. Students are also encouraged to take up various research projects. 2.4 Teacher Quality One of the strong pillars of the institution is the quality of teaching imparted to the students in the institute. The teaching faculty is the backbone of any academic institute. The teaching faculty selected must fulfill all the norms and the minimum qualification for teaching as laid down by CCH and MUHS which is M.D (Hom.). For ensuring development of Faculty, the institution has established its own Faculty Development Cell called as Homoeopathic Education Technical Unit (HETU) to train the faculty on medical educational technologies. The Faculty Development Cell of the institute organizes and encourages all the faculty to attend seminars, guest lectures, workshops, conferences, exhibitions, orientation programms, training workshops, research workshops at college/ State/ University/ National level. Teachers are encouraged to attend MET that is training program on medical educational technologies, which is organized by MUHS. The institution promotes inter-institutional collaborations to encourage the faculty to undertake research projects. The institutionn also encourages the faculty to visit other institutions for teaching, attending seminar, conferences, workshops, and undertaking research projects. Also it invites senior eminent faculty from other institutes to give seminars, special lectures to the students. The institutionn has a well-defined career advancement policy for its staff, wherein promotion opportunities are given as per the guidelines laid down by CCH and MUHS based upon the teaching experience and performance, recognition as P.G guides as per the guideline laid down by CCH and MUHS, appointment as Principal Investigator for major inter-institutional collaborative projects etc. The attrition rate amongst the faculty is quite insignificant. The institution promotes and encourages a healthy environment where the faculty feels at ease. The institutionn takes regular feedback of the faculty on the curriculum, teaching learning process, infrastructure, facilities provided to them etc. Incentives are given to the faculty on performance basis. Incentives like on-duty leave etc. are given to faculty for attending seminars, workshops, conferences etc. 2.5 Evaluation Process and Reforms The institution makes sure that all the stakeholders are made aware of the evaluation processes from time to time. At the time of admission, college 11

13 brochure is given to each and every student which contains all the details of the program and the evaluation process. Regular feedback is taken from students, teachers and parents which helps in assessing the evaluation process from time to time. The teaching faculty as well as the administrative staff is made aware of any changes in the evaluation process through circulars. The evaluation process and the outcomes are showcased on the notice board The evaluation process is basically of two types: Summative assessment Summative Assessment is in form of MUHS Examinations. Collegee strictly follows the rules and regulations laid down by MUHS, for conducting Theory, Practical and Viva Voce. Formative assessment The formative assessment examinations are considered to be a stepping stone to appear for summative examinations: Thoughh MUHS has discontinued internal examinations for BHMS course, the college has adopted it as a means of continuous student assessment Formative assessment is in form of internal examinations comprising of Theory, Practicals, Viva Voce, etc are conducted by the college. Increasing objectivity in formative assessments. OSCE, Structures and Semi structured viva is introduced Student Performance and Learning Outcomes The institution has its own well-articulated vision and mission statement as well as well-defined Goals and Objectives which reflects its Graduate Attributes. The students are made aware of their moral and social responsibilities towards community as Homoeopathic Doctors through orientation cum induction programs, special lectures, value added lectures etc. College also organizes special lectures, seminars on personality development, and development of Life skills. The examination results are consistently good which reflects the success of various strategies implemented by college. The final results in UG examinations range from %, with an average of 94.84% CRITERION III: RESEARCH, CONSULTANCY AND EXTENSION 3.1 Promotion of Research There is an Institutional Research Committee (IRC) whichh monitors and addresses issues related to research and is responsible to implement policies formulated regarding research. IRC identifies research thrust areas, encourages staff and students to submit project proposals to external agencies to seek funding 12

14 Monitoring by IRC has resulted in the following impact: Workshops on research methodology was conductedd in April2015 Increasee of publications from 2012 Undertaking self-funded projects at departmental level using facilities of institution The college has well established Ethics Committee to ensure that the research projects are carried out in accordance with ICMR and ICH/GCP and CCRH/AYUSH guidelines as well as local regulatory requirements. Multidisciplinary/ interdisciplinary/ transdisciplinary research is promoted within the institution and with other institutions 3.2 Resource Mobilization for Research The institutionn has 6 completed minor projects and 4 institutional projects which are self-funded. ongoing inter- 3.3 Research Facilities The institutionn has laboratories in departments of Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacy and Pathology that can be used for research purpose. There is adequate clinical material in the hospital for undertaking research projects The institutionn has collaboration with Dr.D.Y.Patil Vidyapeeth (DPU) to use research facilities and laboratories in its constituent colleges for undertaking research. Library and IT resources of the institute is made available for research. 3.4 Research Publications and Awards The teaching staff has published various papers, articles in national and international journals as well as on websites. The details are as follows: Number of papers published in peer reviewed journals (national / international) - 34 Monographs-01 Books with ISBN with details of publishers articles of teaching staff are published in journals that are listed on international databases. The institution has policies to check plagiarism. Shodh Ganga software is there in DPU to check for plagiarism. MUHS has policies to check plagiarism as well. 3.5 Consultancy Institute offers honorary and reciprocatory consultancy to other institutes The information of available expertise is publicized on college website and in Brochures, Handouts, Banners. Word of mouth publicity is given. The institute conducts Health check up camps free of cost and provides consultancy services on honorary basis 13

15 3.6 Extension Activities and Institutional Social Responsibility (ISR) The institutionn is committed to realize its social responsibility through meaningful and purposeful extension and outreach activities. The curriculum is implemented in such a way that it sensitizes faculty and students for their institutional and social responsibilities. The extensionn programmes achieve goals and objectives such as systematic training of students and systematic extension activities with reference to health care and community development. The extensionn activities include: Health awareness and sensitization programmes, participation in National Health Programmes, Blood donation camps, Homoeopathic medical camps, celebration of all national days of importance which are organized by the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit and the Department of Community Medicine of the college. Recently the department of community medicine has performed the extension activity Swachh Bharath and SwasthBharathh according to guidelines from AYUSH, the college has adopted five colonies for this activity and arranges lectures, health checkups camps for the same. The college organizes special OPD s and health check up camps for women during women s week. Special lectures are arranged on diet, prevention of obesity, osteoarthritis in women. 3.7 Collaborations The college has academic linkages with institutes of repute regarding sharing of their knowledge, laboratory and research facilities and other resources. Due to these collaborations the faculty and students have benefitted in their academicc activities in terms of research projects, knowledge and technical expertise. CRITERION IV: INFRASTRUCTURE AND LEARNING RESOURCES 4.1 Physical Facilities: Dr. D.Y. Patil Homoeopathic Medical College & Research Centre, Pune has its spacious campus of 2 acres at Pune in the PimpriChinchwad Corporation. The institutionn has a state-of-art infrastructure fulfilling all the minimum standard requirements set down by CCH. All the departments are meeting the norms laid down in the MSR by CCH. Departments of Anatomy, Physiology, Homoeopathic Pharmacy and Pathology have got a spacious well- ventilated student s laboratories which are well-equipped with all the instruments and appliances as laid down in the MSR by CCH. Facilities like ramp, special parking area, wheel chairs, stretchers, elevator are present for physically challenged students and patients. 14

16 4.2 Clinical / Laboratory Learning Resources: Number of specialty services: 6 Clinical Departments. Memorandum of understanding with Dr D Y Patil Hospital and Research Centre, Pimpri regarding utilization of ICU and operation theatre for learning purposes. Number of beds: 43 3 OPD s as per norms plus 1 Screening OPD, displaying the names of respective faculties are functioning Number of beds in ICU / ICCU / PICU / NICU, etc: 2 Number of operation theatres: 2 for demonstration Number of Diagnostic Service Departments: 1 (Radiology dept.) Clinical Laboratories: 1 Effective system for disposal of Bio-hazardous waste. The hospital has laid down its own good clinical practice guidelines and SOP s which are clearly depicted outside the OPD s and IPD s. The hospital staff is trained periodically regarding the SOP s carried out in the hospital. Safety Measures are displayed in the relevant areas like silence zone, no smoking etc.. Regular feedback is taken from patients and improvements are incorporated. All registration of patients is done online to avoid wastage of time and long queue at the registration counter. 4.3 Library as Learning Resource: Total area of the library (in Sq. fts.) Wide variety of books on Homoeopathy, Allopathy, Yoga and other allied Medical Sciences.Variety of Journals/Magazines on Homoeopathy and e- Journals. whichh are as follows: - Books (UG)+ 338 (PG)= Total-4792, Back volumes- 1193, Journals 15, Non Print CDs- 64 The Institute has developed OPAC, ERP Library management System. 4.4 IT Infrastructure: The institution has well established IT department with comprehensive IT policies. The institutional IT policy is developed along with implementation of e- governance in all areas of Dr.D.Y. Patil Homoeopathic Medical College administration. 15

17 The institute provides dedicated computer facility to each and every student and faculty. All the systems in LAN with Internet facility are fully implemented with the help of Centralized Data Centre Dr. D. Y. PatilVidyaPratishthan Society has constituted an IT cell & Software Development Center to take care of hardware and internet connectivity along with software installation, creation of new software and their maintenance. Wi-Fi enabled campus with high speed internet connectivity. The plan of the IT cell is for continuous up-gradation of ICT at regular intervals with the latest available technology. Some of the strategies are: Up-gradation of e-learning resources, internet and Wi-Fi facilities, CCTV for supervision and monitoring, videoconferencing, software for various academic, clinical and research programs etc. The institution has 57 computers, 3 LCD s 4.5 Maintenance of campus facilities: The mother institution Dr. D.Y. PatilVidyaPratishthan Society, Pune has a maintenance cell with designated personnel and officials for carrying out and overseeing the maintenance of buildings, class-rooms, laboratories and other campus facilities Maintenance of computers, printers, software, hardware, and internet connectivity is done through central IT department. Annual maintenance contracts for bio-medical equipment, computers and other gadgets are in place.adequate budget provisions have been made for maintenance. CRITERION V: STUDENT SUPPORT & PROGRESSION 5.1 Student Mentoring and Support The institution has established number of committees for student support like Student s Council, Anti Ragging, Mentorship, Parent- Teacher association, Grievance Redressal, Alumni Association, Academic Committee, Library etc. Apart from class room interactions, the following provisions are available for academic mentoring: Mentor- Mentee system, small group discussions, quizzes. Debates, seminars, symposiums, Bedside clinics & clinical postings, internal examination, tutorial, assignment, camps, pharmacy visits, seminar conferences are organized on periodical basis Encouragement to fast learners E-learning resources are available for students. The scholarships including social welfare scholarship are available for SC/ST/OBC students as per the guidelines of Govt. of Maharashtra. Drop- out rate of the institute is almost nil. Student diversity of the institute speaks volumes of the facilities provided by the college for their betterment and progression. Most of our students have their own private homoeopathic practice. Remaining students are well placed in other private institutions of repute. 5.3 Student Participation and Activities The institute promotes and encourages students to participate in sports and cultural events and other extra-curricular activities. Following incentives are given to students who participate in sports and cultural events and other extra-curricular activities: Incentives are given in the form of special leaves. Providing infrastructure support. Appropriate weightage in internal examinations. Mentoring and training support. Felicitation of prize winners at Annual social function Our college team has also participated in varieties of events like inter- organized collegiate quiz competition, debate, drama singing competitions by the University as well as other colleges. Our students also participate in NSS as well as other extension activities of the college like medical health check-up camps, blood donation camps, health awareness camps, tree plantation activity, celebration of all National days of importance etc. 18

20 CRITERION VI: GOVERNANCE, LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT 6.1 Institutional Vision and Leadership The vision &mission statement of the college clearly highlights the budding Homoeopaths to carry forward their mission of curing the sick dedicatedly &shoulder responsibilities and ability to cope with challenges and problems and bring about Holistic health in the community. The institute strives for achieving excellence through its well formulated goals & objectives to achieve the same. The institution also promotes a culture of participative management. 6.2 Strategy Development and Deployment The institution strives to achieve continuous growth in every aspect. It has fulfilled the minimum standard requirement set forth by AYUSH, CCH and MUHS. The institution has framed its own vision and mission and efforts are made by every member of the institution to achieve them. The institution aims at bringing about Holistic health in the community with spread of Homoeopathy. The institutionn has implemented advanced methods in teaching & learning. Access to E-library, use of audio-visual aids, PPT presentations, problem based learning have facilitated easy understanding among the students. They are encouraged to enact roles and perform plays to inculcate interest in active learning. The institutionn is the centre for R&D. The faculty is encouraged to work on new research projects in the relevant thrust areas. Both Institutional and Collaborative projects are undertaken by the faculty members of different department. Studies are conducted to formulate protocol to deal with epidemics. Research Methodology workshop has been arranged for the faculty and PG students to build the scientific attitude towards research. The faculties are encouraged to attend various lectures, and training programmes. Community-based learning is achieved by the activities of PSM department& NSS Unit through organization of health check-up, blood donation camps, surveys and awareness programmes. Dataa procured from these help in adopting new health related developmental strategies. The institution encourages celebrating the National Days of Importance like World TB Day, World AIDS day to spread awareness about the disease and its preventive measures in the masses.
