1 POLY LIFE What Your Students Can Expect If your students thrive on practice-oriented learning and enjoy the freedom of a dynamic and flexible learning environment, then a polytechnic education would be a right fit for them. They will find that internships, overseas exposure and real-life projects in close collaboration with the industry make up the core of their learning journey. How do poly students learn? At the heart of a poly education is applying what is learnt in classrooms to real world situations. Hence, Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) students are exposed to a variety of applied and experiential learning approaches that are technology-enabled. In addition to about 25 to 30 hours of lectures, tutorials and workshops per week, they will be exposed to industry-based projects and workplace internships. Ranging from six weeks to six months, these workplace internships, which can include overseas immersion, let students put their learning into practice. NP also offers every student the chance to go on at least one overseas stint through an internship, immersion, exchange programme or community service trip. What else is unique to an NP education? At NP, students are encouraged to look beyond their field of study with our broad-based and multidisciplinary approach to learning. On top of the core discipline modules, NP students are also offered a wide array of more than 70 elective modules to choose from. The elective modules account for per cent of a student s curriculum hours and cover the major areas of Communication, Entrepreneurship, Life Skills, Media & the Arts, and Science & Technology. What is the learning environment like? All NP students get to learn in a totally wireless campus. They can log on to the Mobile elearning (MeL) platform to review class schedules, do self-study, hand in assignments, communicate with lecturers and undertake research. Students also enjoy hands-on learning in state-of-the-art facilities that include multimedia and animation studios, research laboratories and technology centres. What s more, the open campus environment at NP nurtures an entrepreneurial spirit amongst students. Various incentive schemes such as EnterpriZe! and platforms such as EntreprenuersConnect@NP nurture a pro-enterprise spirit among our student community beyond the requirements of a set curriculum. What else do NP students get up to? In between bouts of studying, our students get to enjoy a vibrant campus that s teeming with excitement. There are numerous study lounges, a California Fitness-style students-only gym and an air-conditioned food court amidst other facilities. With over 100 sports and CCA groups, students will find something to keep them entertained and help them hone their skills while they are here. NP also offers free shuttle bus services from Clementi, Hougang, Tampines and Woodlands so that getting to school is so much easier. POLY EDUCATION Introduction : 3 :

How about opportunities for further education? More and more NP students are going places, with their diplomas serving as a gateway to further education. 43% of our fresh graduates go on to pursue a degree immediately after graduation and 64% of our graduates do so within five years. And since 2007, three NP graduates have even become the first poly graduates to be admitted into NUS Medical School! Please see page 17 for more information on degree opportunities for NP graduates. What about job prospects for poly graduates? If your student decides to join the workforce soon after graduation, he or she will be glad to know that polytechnic graduates are well sought-after by both public and private sector employers. Despite the global economic recession, about 90% of polytechnic graduates found jobs within a few months of graduating. In fact, the average gross monthly salaries* of our fresh graduates have also risen steadily over the last three years! Please refer to the table below for a quick glance at their average salaries in POLY EDUCATION Introduction : 4 : Course Group Gross Monthly Salary* Accountancy, Business, Finance & Law $1,832 Built Environment $1,806 Chemical & Life Sciences & Other Sciences $1,898 Engineering (Electrical & Electronic) $1,913 Engineering (Mechanical & Manufacturing) $1,922 Health Sciences $1,820 Information Technology $1,808 Maritime $1,923 Media & Design $1,765 ALL COURSES $1,854 * Gross Salary refers to the average basic salary plus fixed allowances, overtime pay and commissions of graduates who were working on a full-time permanent basis as of 1 October Bonuses were excluded.

2The Basics of POLY ADMISSION This section helps you in guiding your students who choose the poly route. When applying for a poly course, students are allowed to indicate up to 12 choices. Unfortunately, some fail to secure a place in poly despite making their selections. This can happen because they have not taken care to understand how their selection affects their chances of getting the course of their choice. In this section, you will find the following key points: Understanding Poly Admissions The Different Course Groups Meeting Minimum Entry Requirements Understanding Aggregate Computation & Ranking Understanding Cut-Off Points The Posting Process Understanding Form A UNDERSTANDING POLY ADMISSIONS Five admissions exercises allow students to enrol for studies in NP. For all exercises, with the exception of the Direct Admissions Exercise (DAE), applicants must not have had any previous enrolment with a poly. JOINT ADMISSIONS EXERCISE (JAE) For current or previous years GCE O Level holders 1 JOINT POLYTECHNIC ADMISSIONS EXERCISE (JPAE) For SPM and STPM holders For ITE Higher NITEC 2 and NITEC 2 holders (including final-year ITE students). DIRECT ADMISSIONS EXERCISE (DAE) For students who are not eligible to apply via the other routes. This includes holders of GCE O Levels with a foreign nationality 1, GCE A Levels and international qualifications. For O Level holders who missed the English language entry requirement by one grade but have at least a B4 grade in Mathematics and a relevant subject 4. JOINT POLYTECHNIC SPECIAL ADMISSIONS EXERCISE (JPSAE) For current GCE O Level holders 3 with outstanding talent/achievements or a strong passion/aptitude - for example, in leadership, entrepreneurship, sports or the arts. Also applies to courses with special courserelated requirements such as Mass Communication and Film, Sound & Video. Note: Students can participate in both the JAE and JPSAE. DIRECT POLYTECHNIC ADMISSION (DPA) For current Sec 4 (Special/Express) or Sec 5 Normal (Academic) students who are interested in and have a talent for applied education. The DPA is conducted in July each year for the subsequent year s intake. Please see page 12 for more details. 1 Foreign students who sat for the GCE O Level exams as private candidates or who have previous years GCE O Level results are to apply through DAE. 2 ITE Nursing graduates with a 3.0 GPA < 3.5 (with at least 1 year work experience and a recommendation by a hospital) can apply for the Diploma in Health Sciences (Nursing) under DAE. 7 HOW POLY ADMISSIONS WORK There are three basic factors to consider when your student applies for a course at NP. Just remember the M-A-C and it will be a breeze! They are: M - Minimum Entry Requirements A - Aggregate Computation C - Cut-off Points MEETING MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS (MER) The MER determines if your student has the basic grades and subjects to qualify. Applicants must meet these entry requirements for a desired course before considering application. Please refer to the following tables for entry requirements for each course group. COURSE GROUP Course Cluster Minimum Entry Requirements Exceptions + Built Environment Engineering Maritime Studies English Mathematics D7 C6 C6 Science* or Design & Technology or Computer Studies or Fundamentals of Electronics SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY COURSES Information Technology English Mathematics Any two other subjects - Business Information Technology - Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering - Horticulture & Landscape Management D7 C6 C6 Chemical & Life Sciences English Mathematics Science* or Fundamentals of Electronics D7 C6 C6 Health Sciences English D7 Mathematics C6 Relevant C6 Science* COURSE GROUP BUSINESS-RELATED COURSES Course Cluster Business Humanities Media & Design Minimum Entry English C6 English C6 English Requirements Mathematics C6 Mathematics D7 Mathematics Any three other C6 Any three other C6 Any three other subjects subjects subjects Exceptions + - Chinese Studies - Chinese Media & Communication - Child Psychology & Early Education - Early Childhood Education B3 C6 C6 COURSE GROUP Course Cluster Minimum Entry Requirements Exceptions + Media & Design English Mathematics Any two other subjects - Product Design & Innovation DESIGN COURSES * With Physics, Chemistry or Biology component + These courses may require additional or omission of credits for entry. Please refer to the individual course synopsis for more details on entry requirements. C5 D7 C6 POLY EDUCATION Introduction : 7 :

UNDERSTANDING AGGREGATE COMPUTATION AND RANKING The next step is to determine the aggregate. This is because there is an intake limit to every course. So, all applicants who have met the minimum entry requirement will now be ranked based on their aggregate. Students with better aggregate points will have a better chance at enrolling in the course of their choice. A student s aggregate is computed using: ELR2B2^ = English Language (EL) + 2 RELEVANT Subjects (R2)* + 2 Other BEST Subjects (B2) * Including Mathematics (Elementary/Additional) ^ The above formula excludes co-curricular activities (CCAs). As ranking is based on net aggregate, students can deduct two points if they have a CCA grade of A1- A2 or one point with a CCA grade of B3 - C6. To determine the RELEVANT (R2) subjects and BEST (B2) subjects for the three course groups #, please refer to the following table. COURSE GROUP SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY (ELR2B2-C) BUSINESS-RELATED (ELR2B2-B) DESIGN (ELR2B2-D) POLY EDUCATION Introduction : 8 : R2** B2*** EL 1st Group of Relevant Subjects 2nd Group of Relevant Subjects - Additional Combined Science - Additional Science - Biology - Chemistry - Combined Science - Computer Studies - Creative 3D Animation - Design & Technology - Engineering Science - Food & Nutrition - Fundamentals of Electronics - General Science - Human & Social Biology - Integrated Science - Physical Science - Physics - Science (Chemistry, Biology) - Science (Physics, Biology) - Science Physics, Chemistry) - Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) English Language Elementary Mathematics or Additional Mathematics - Art/Art & Design - Business Studies - Combined Humanities - Commerce - Commercial Studies - Economics - Geography - Higher Art - Higher Music - History - Introduction to Enterprise Development - Literature in Chinese - Literature in English - Literature in Malay - Literature in Tamil - Music - Principles of Accounts Best 2 other subjects - Additional Combined Science - Additional Science - Art/Art & Design - Biology - Chemistry - Combined Science - Computer Studies - Creative 3D Animation - Design & Technology - Engineering Science - Food & Nutrition - Fundamentals of Electronics - General Science - Higher Art - Human & Social Biology - Integrated Science - Physical Science - Physics - Science (Chemistry, Biology) - Science (Physics, Biology) - Science (Physics, Chemistry) - Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) # For more information on which courses fall under each group, please refer to page 6. ** Any one of the subjects in the first AND second groups taken together will count for the two RELEVANT subjects (R2). If a student does not have the relevant subjects for R2, then the aggregate for that course group will not be computed. *** The two BEST subjects (B2) refers to any other O level subjects, excluding CCAs and including those in the two groups of relevant subjects, which have not been counted as relevant subjects.

UNDERSTANDING CUT-OFF POINTS (COP) The COP is the net aggregate score of the last student posted to a course. This changes yearly and is dependant on the number of applicants and available places for a particular course. The COP is an indication of how popular a particular course was in the previous JAE. This is useful information for students to use as a guide when selecting their courses, though it should not be the only criteria. A student s first few choices should be courses he or she is most passionate about, followed by choices that they are interested in and have a good chance of getting into. As a reference, all NP courses under the 2009 JAE is shown in the following table. As the COP is updated annually, please refer to for the latest figures. SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY COURSES 2009 JAE COP BUILT ENVIRONMENT Leisure & Business Facilities Management 15 Real Estate Business 18 Sustainable Urban Design & Engineering NEW CHEMICAL & LIFE SCIENCES Biomedical Science/Biomedical Laboratory Technology 9 Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering 14 Horticulture & Landscape Management 19 Molecular Biotechnology 12 Pharmacy Science 11 Veterinary Bioscience NEW ENGINEERING Aerospace Electronics 14 Aerospace Technology 12 Audio-visual Technology 15 Biomedical Engineering 17 Clean Energy Management 16 Electrical Engineering 24 Electronic & Computer Engineering 23 Engineering with Business Management Programme 20 (previously known as Engineering Common Programme) Environmental & Water Technology 15 Mechanical Engineering 23 Mechatronic Engineering 23 HEALTH SCIENCES Health Sciences (Nursing) 28 Optometry 13 INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY Business Information Technology 14 Financial Informatics 15 Information Technology 17 Multimedia & Animation 16 Network Systems & Security 18 MARITIME STUDIES Marine & Offshore Technology 17 POLY EDUCATION Introduction : 9 :

THE POSTING PROCESS The final step before making the actual course selection is to understand the posting process. The process ranks applicants in order of merit, based on their NET aggregate (after taking into account CCA bonus points). Each applicant is then considered for his/her choice of courses (up to a maximum of 12 choices) in the order of preference indicated. This is subject to vacancies available in the course. POLY EDUCATION Introduction : 10 : Applicants with better aggregates for a course are considered for admission to that course first. Do note that there is a priority posting for applicants who have indicated the Diploma in Health Sciences (Nursing) as their first choice and have met the pre-determined cut-off aggregate for the year. If you require more information such as details on eligibility requirements, application steps, examples of ranking criteria or aggregate computation, please refer to

USEFUL TIPS Be eligible for the course Students must meet the entry requirements of the courses selected. Be guided by interest Students should not be limited or constrained by purely looking at last year s cut-off points. As they have 12 options, a student s first few choices should be courses he or she is most passionate about. This can then be followed by choices that they are interested in and stand a good chance of getting into. Be realistic include less competitive courses Keeping in mind the competition, students should include some courses for which their results can clearly qualify. Take advantage of CCA bonus points Remind students that they can deduct CCA bonus points from their aggregate based on their CCA grade. Indicate ALL 12 choices Be prudent and encourage students to make all 12 options even if they are very confident of entering the course of their first choice. UNDERSTANDING FORM A Students will receive Form A from their secondary schools on the day that the GCE O Level results are officially announced. Here s how you can help your students make sense of it. Subject code and grade based on the student s examination results ELR2B2-B=06 ELR2B2-C=05 ELR2B2-D=05 Aggregate for poly courses. e.g. The aggregate for Business-related courses is 06, Science & Technology courses is 05. Remember to deduct 2 points for CCA grade A1 - A2 and 1 point for CCA grade B3 - C6. Ngee Ann course codes indicating the diplomas that the student can apply for. e.g. N45 stands for Ngee Ann s Diploma in Business Studies. 12 3DIRECT POLY ADMISSION If your final-year secondary school students are clearly interested in and have an aptitude for applied education, then the Direct Polytechnic Admission (DPA) exercise is for them. It will give them a direct route to the polytechnic course of their choice even before their O level examinations. What are the benefits of the DPA? For a start, students will be able to secure a place in the course of their choice even before sitting for their GCE O level examinations. They will join the 8-week Ngee Ann Preparatory Programme (NPP), which will give them an early taste of poly life and insights into NP s unique brand of broad-based learning. Undertaking the NPP also means that they will earn credits for modules ahead of their peers. This will free up to 180 hours of curriculum time when they join NP as full-time students. With the extra time, they can engage in more CCAs, obtain extra certifications or pursue enrichment modules. Who are eligible? Secondary 4 (Special/Express) or Secondary 5 Normal (Academic) students are eligible to apply using their most recent set of school examination results. What are the conditions? To ensure that students are able to cope with the rigours of a poly education, DPA offers are conditional. They will need to achieve a nett ELR2B2^ score of not more than 26 points in their O level examinations and meet the Minimum Entry Requirements for their chosen course. How much does the NPP cost? The NPP costs $150 for Singaporean students, $165 for PRs and $225 for foreign students. Financial assistance is available. What is the difference between the Direct Poly Admission (DPA), the Joint Poly Special Admissions Exercise (JPSAE) and the Direct Admissions Exercise (DAE)? If your student has an aptitude for a particular area of study and wishes to pursue it at a polytechnic, then you might want to encourage them to consider the DPA exercise. What will they need to be successfully enrolled? When your students log on to the DPA website, they will be offered three choices and the chance to demonstrate their interest in and aptitude for applied learning through a 500-character write-up for each choice. The JPSAE, however, is for a student who has an outstanding talent, achievement, aptitude or passion that may not be related to any particular field of study. For example, you might want to encourage a student who shows good leadership potential, is an entrepreneur, has a talent for the arts or is a gifted sportsperson to apply for poly via this exercise. POLY EDUCATION Introduction : 12 : To strengthen their application, they should focus on and write about the accomplishments relevant to the course they re applying for e.g. mentioning (if they have) their role as the editor of the school newspaper when applying for the Diploma in Mass Communications. They should also mention any CCA that is related to the course of their choice e.g. if they ve been a member of the St John s Ambulance Brigade when applying for the Diploma in Health Sciences (Nursing). Participation in programmes such as NP s Advanced Elective Modules (AEMs), Applied Subjects (AS), competitions and more will also add strength to their application. The DAE is purely merit-based and is useful if your student has missed the English Language entry requirement for a course by one grade in his/her O levels but has done extremely well in other relevant subjects. In addition to their JPSAE or DAE application, your students will still be eligible, and should be encouraged, to apply via the Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE) as well. The DPA is held in July whereas the JPSAE and the DAE are run concurrently during the JAE period. ^ ELR2B2 = English Language (EL) + 2 Relevant Subjects (R2) + 2 Other Best Subjects (B2), excluding co-curricular activities.
