The college is now one of the Constituent Units of Kolhan University, Chaibasa, The college has been a significant center of higher education and Intellectual development for the people of Inchagarh Vidhan Sabha Constituency and the adjoining area. The college is situated in purely rural and tribal belt of Saraikella Kharswan District. The Numbers of Students studying in the college is now approximately Most of the students hail from ST/SC/BC-l & downtrodden community of the area. The college has a Library having more than books for degree course. There is a reading room for the students and teachers of the college. The academic session starts after summer vacation. 5 FROM THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL It is our enormous pleasure to submit the Self Study Report (SSR) of Singhbhum College, Chandil to the National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore for the 1 st Cycle of Accreditation in conformity with LOI and IEQA and for desired quality improvement and to strengthen us in our mission for excellence. Singhbhum College was established in 1973 with a vision to impart higher education among the students of the locality and to strive for an all round development of the students. This College is located in semi-urban area and is continuously enhancing education among the people living under poverty line and away from mainstream of the life up to graduation level in Science, Arts & Commerce stream and in Commerce up to Post Graduation level. It is acting as a great deterrent for the youth to move towards extreme political and violent activity. This institute of higher education is recognized by the UGC under section 2(f) and 12(B) of the Body enacted in Singhbhum College, Chandil was first affiliated by Ranchi University, Ranchi and was converted into a constituent unit of the same University. On , with the creation of Kolhan University, Chaibasa, it has becomes its constituent unit. The College has been consistently maintaining high academic standards and good institutional social responsibilities. The Self Study Report is prepared according to the instructions laid down by NAAC. The documents have been prepared by the IQAC with utmost honesty and dedication and to the best of my knowledge based on the records available in the institution. This SSR is the outcome of the collective and continuous efforts of the teachers and non-teaching staff of the college. 7 PREFACE Singhbhum College, Chandil was established in the year 1973 with humble cooperation of education loving persons like Sri D.N. Verma, Ex. B.D.O. Chandil, Late Satrughna Aditya Dev (Raja Saheb Pathkum) Late M.L. Jaiswal, Late Shambhu Munka, Late D.P.Rungta, Late Md. Mohiuddin Ansari, Sri Dhananjoy Mahto (Ex. MLC), Sri Ghanshyam Mahto (Ex.-Forest Minister, Govt. of Bihar), Late Sita Ram Sultania, Late Ghanshyam Mahto (Ex. MLA, Ichagarh Vidhan Sabha- Constituency cum secretary of College Governing Body), Sri Subodh Gopal Benarjee, Sri Suresh Khaitan, Sri R. Besides these persons, the people of the nearest Villages have also played an important role by donating money and material to this institution. The then Deputy Commissioner of Singhbhum District laid down the foundation stone of the College Building in the year The College family is very much obliged to the above mentioned personalities for their self dedication and sacrifice for the establishment of the College. The College was converted into a constituent unit of Ranchi University on 24 th November The College is situated at the entrance of Chandil Bazar beside N.H. 32, (towards Jamshedpur to Purulia) in newly framed Chandil subdivision in Seraikella-Kharswan district. This is the only Constituent College of Kolhan University in Ichagrah Vidhan Sabha constituency. This college is now imparting Co- education upto post Graduation course. This institution has been a significant centre of Higher Education and intellectual development of the people of Ichagarh Viddhan Sabha Constituency and the adjoining area. At present the college caters to the educational need of about 3000 students who get admitted to the 18 departments in three major faculties, such as Arts, Science and Commerce of the college. All the departments except Botany and Zoology offer UG course in both Honours and at General level, while the latter two offer only General and Singhbhum College Page 7

8 Subsidiary courses in the concerned subject. Besides the college also runs Post Graduate programme in Commerce. The college while maintaining the youthful exuberance also provides intellectually simulating environment to the local populace. It provides wonderful avenue and impetus for honing the skill of the local talent. In keeping with the global and national standard, recently the college has taken several initiatives to make it a technologically enabled campus. As a result the campus has now become fully Wi-Fi enabled and is available freely to the students and staff. The Central Library of the college is enabled with INFLIBINET subscription with adequate facility of reprography. All the departments and sections are well equipped with computers and internets along with printers and scanners. The management is planning to provide classrooms with ICT facilities and to connect all class rooms with the presently available well equipped Audio-Visual room. The college is also going to bring the benefit of Spoken Tutorial project by MNE through ICT to all its students. The college seems to be a beautiful garden with its students, who come from different economic, social, cultural, religious and lingual backgrounds but treated equally and get equal opportunity both in curricular and extra-curricular aspects for which the College Management and the Equal Opportunity Cell work round the clock. The college campus is free from ragging, sexual or any type of harassment and all kind of anti-social activities. After all, CCTV cameras have been installed at each corner of the campus along with inside the buildings for the safeguard of the students without compromising with anyone s privacy. The college has a clear objective for its student Learn, earn and serve with dignity. Largely due to uncompromising dedication and perseverance of the teaching faculties and all the staff members, Singhbhum College, Chandil has always been giving better output as compared to the input. Each year, a considerable amount of our students top the university examinations. The pass percentage is also generally higher than other colleges of the university. Despite, the challenges of infrastructure, our students has been bringing delights to us by their ever increasing success in extra-curricular activities at both state and national levels. Though there is no formal mechanism available at the college to record the students post-college progression and advance carrier option, yet through social networking and by some other media, the college boasts of the fact that today significant percentage of our alumni are placed in responsible social, political, administrative and academic positions in the service of nation, society and humanity. 9 Singhbhum College Chandil puts very high premium on its Institutional Social Responsibilities. Accordingly, the institution has been thriving for social and national service at various levels through all possible means at its disposal. Besides, the NSS unit as a solid team of teachers and students is effectively functioning in support of social causes and public awareness. B. Sc. Teaching (Hons /Gen) has been introduced in this College from the year 2000 under the aegis of Ranchi University, Ranchi. Now, Singhbhum College, Chandil is one of the Constituent units of Kolhan University, Chaibasa. This is the single Constituent unit in Kolhan University, Chaibasa which is empowering Science education among the Sc and ST and downtrodden students of this backward belt of Seraikella Kharswan district. In this connection, it may be mentioned that Syndicate of Kolhan University, Chaibasa has put forward a request to Human Resource Department of the Govt. of Jharkhand for the approval of sanctioned post in the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics respectively on the basis of recommendation of inspection committee constituted by Kolhan University, Chaibasa and approved by Post- creation committee of K. U., Chaibasa. Despite many limitations, the institution has been continuously endeavoring to provide quality education to all and to fulfill its social responsibilities. In this direction we have achieved a lot. However, it s still an unfinished agenda and we do believe that we have just embarked on our journey and we have miles to go. Singhbhum College Page 9

10 Executive Summary CRITERION I: CURRICULAR ASPECT The college is a permanent constituent unit of Kolhan University and duly recognized by UGC U/S 2(f) and 12(B). The college offers the courses which are duly approved by the university both in permanent and temporary categories and follows all the regulations and guidelines of the affiliating university, UGC, government or any of the statutory body concerned. At present, the college offers 17 UG (three years degree: both Honours and General) programmes, two PG (two years degree) programmes. The College follows the syllabus of Kolhan University. Though there is little scope in redesigning the syllabus at the college level, our teachers are adequately represented at the Board of Studies of the University and have ample role in redesigning and updating of the curriculum. Teachers prepare the learning outcomes of the subjects taught. CRITERION II: TEACHING, LEARNING AND EVALUATION The college provides quality education in various disciplines ranging from languages to social sciences, humanities, commerce, and pure sciences. Admissions in the college are merit-based adhering completely to the regulations and directives as stipulated are revised by Kolhan University from time to time. They are carried out by an admission committee which is duly constituted by the Principal. The Committee decides in its meetings the cut-offs from time to time for different courses, inform University in this regard, put them on College notice board for wider publicity and for ensuring transparency. The Committee ensures fair opportunities to different sections of the society in the admissions as per University guidelines. Towards this, due weightage is given to the candidates belonging to SC, ST and PH categories. Relaxation is given to female Singhbhum College Page 10

11 students as per rules of the University to ensure their fair representation in admissions. Due consideration is given to sports and extracurricular activities. The College grants fee concession to the economically weak students according to the rules of the Government. The College has rich tradition where teachers in their personal capacity help deserving and needy students financially. The college also organises special teaching / coaching classes for such students to enhance their employability and competitive strength. To incentivise students, prizes for outstanding academic performances as well as for excelling in the fields of Sports, NSS, NCC and extra- curricular activities have been instituted by the University. The College follows a multi-faceted learning process which includes not only the lecture & tutorial classes, but also interactive discussions, collaborative exercises, project works, and presentations. For better dissemination of knowledge, the college provides various communication tools like LCD projectors. Industrial, historical, cultural tours are frequently organized for students to gain on site knowledge. Further, departmental societies regularly organize seminars, extension-lectures, quizzes, debates and other activities in their respective fields. Faculty members continuously strive for learning and keeping abreast of the latest developments in their respective fields. The Faculty regularly participates in conferences, workshops, seminars, and refresher courses with many of them being regularly invited as resource persons at such events. The College also regularly organizes conferences, workshops and Seminars. Our faculty members are also associated with the University and UGC sponsored prestigious Innovation/ Research Projects. The performance of the students and learning outcome is regularly evaluated and monitored by conducting periodic class tests, presentations, assignments, discussions as a part of students assessment while their final evaluation is made through examination conducted by the university. 12 CRITERION III: RESEARCH, CONSULTANCY AND EXTENTION A large number of faculties having Ph. D. degree with large number of publication are actively involved in research. Seven of the faculty members have successfully supervised research scholars leading to Ph. D. degree and nine members have research scholars registered with them. Five minor research projects of the UGC have been received by the faculty of the college. During last four years, one International, one National and many University and College level seminars have been conducted. At present one of our faculty member is supervising a Post-Doctoral Scholar The college has also introduced INFLIBNET facility in Wi-Fi connectivity is available for students and teachers in the campus for improve research activities. Students of the college who have joined NSS have organized tree-plantation programmes, blood donation camps, AIDS awareness programmes, cleanliness programme in the adjoin villages. The college as whole family has active participation in Clean India Movement. NCC unit of the college has also been instrumental in organizing awareness campaigns and administration of polio drops for the eradication of polio in the adjoining areas. CRITERION IV: INFRASTRUCTURE AND LEARNING RESOURCES The College has sufficient class rooms and equipments like projector etc. The college has six well equipped departmental laboratories. The Central Library of the college has more than books. The College has a digital library with sufficient numbers of Text Books, Reference Books, journals and magazines etc. The College has a Conference Room and an Audio Visual Room. Internet, computers, printers, scanners are provided to all sections and departments of the college The college has high power transformer, generator, adequate amounts of inverters and UPS as power supply and back-up facilities CRITERION V: STUDENTS SUPPORT AND PROGRESSION The College believes that its primary stakeholders are the students. All aspects of education focus on the core values of contributing to national development while fostering global competencies among students. The College admits students from all social milieus and empowers them through intensive mentoring and counseling to face the challenges of life and become responsible and sensitized citizens of the country. Some faculty members are available within the College premises and students can approach them with their personal, academic and career related issues. Book bank facility, fee concession, free studentship and numerous other facilities are provided to the students every year. Prizes have been instituted by the University which are merit based and given for excellence in the field of academics and extracurricular activities providing support and incentive to students to do their best. The College provides special support to slow learners and those who need additional help through a variety of means such as remedial and extra classes. The Grievance Redressal Committee, Anti-Ragging Committee and Complaints Committee ensure a conducive and secure environment for growth and development of students. The Career Counseling cum Placement Cell at the College facilitates the training and on campus recruitment of our students. Many organizations come to the College for pre placement talks and recruitment. CRITERION VI: GOVERNANCE, LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT The Principal, Coordinators of different Committees, Heads of the Departments, the Coordinators of different courses and the Controller of Examinations provide Singhbhum College Page 13

14 effective leadership enabling the college to fulfill its twin missions of excellence in education and skill development and catering to the national and global need and empowerment of the weaker sections of the society. There are a number of committees in the college to perform the various functions related to discipline, personality development, social responsibility etc. The College has an active Management Committee to look after all matters related to the college. CRITERION VII: INNOVATIONS AND BEST PRACTICES For realizing the vision of making quality assurance an integral part of the functioning of an institution of higher education, the college subjects itself to periodic self and external evaluation. It also collaborates with the members for assurance and sustenance of quality in higher education. All the five core values of NAAC, that is, national development, fostering global competencies among students, inculcating a healthy value system, promoting the use of technology and quest for excellence are sought to be promoted by the various functions of the college. The young teachers of the college are adopting IT added teaching methods. The college is going to introduce the Spoken Tutorial Project by MNE through ICT. Our college as a constituent unit of Kolhan University follows all the guidelines and direction provided by the university in the matter of admission. To maximize students enrolment the college uses adequate publicity tools, where as to ensure transparency in admission process, the institution is guided by an experienced Admission Committee. Publicity: All details of admission procedure are displayed on the website, college notice board and banner etc. The college ensures publicity to the admission by printing College Prospectus containing the campus profile, details of Academic Calendar, the Vision & Mission of the institution, the facilities and scholarship available for students etc. The final list of students is displayed in the college notice board Explain in detail the criteria adopted and process of admission.
