2 Today s goal: Agenda Students will be able to identify barriers to high school graduation. Students will be able to know how to successfully identify a college of choice using the Naviance software. Students will be able to know how to successfully apply for a college of choice using the Naviance and Common App program. 3 Graduation Requirements / Credit Checks English: 4 credits Math: 4 credits, one must be Algebra 2 Science: 3 credits, one must be a physical science (integrated science) & one must be life science (biology). Social Studies: 3 credits which must include World History, American History, Economics, Principles of Democracy Fine Arts: 1 credit Health:.50 credit Physical Education:.50 credit (ea. PE class is only worth.25 credit) Electives: 4 credits

7 Naviance Log-In Login Information Username: First name and Last name. All one word. Ex. RobertSmith Password: Your student id number. (also serves as your lunch code) Trouble logging in? Put a space between your first and last name or underscore (ex. Robert_Smith.) If this doesn t work, let the presenter know.

8 Common Application Students can find a link to the Common Application website on their Naviance Family Connection account on the Colleges tab. 1. Select the Colleges tab. 2. Select Colleges I am applying to. 3. If you will be using the Common Application, use the link there to go to the Common Application website and set up your Common Application account. The Common Application website is: Record your user name (your address) and password so that you can easily return to this website. You will also need to enter your user name (same as your address) on Naviance Family Connection to sync the two accounts.

9 Linking Common App to Naviance I.) Students will need to complete part of the Common Application before syncing the Common Application with Naviance Family Connection. 1. Complete education section in Common App. 2. Add a college to My College 3. Access FERPA form. Select college and select assign recommenders (do not list names). This gives you access to the FERPA Release Form. 4. Click the FERPA Release Authorization, giving PHSN permission to send your transcript. Follow the instructions and click these items: I authorize every school that I have attended to release all requested records I waive my right to review all recommendations and supporting documents (You may choose to waive or not to waive your right to review recommendations. The right to view recommendation, if you choose to keep it, will only be applicable at the college you choose to attend.). I understand that my waiver or no waiver selection above pertains to all colleges. You are now ready to sync the Common Application with your Naviance Family Connection Account. Remember, at this point, the Common Application is not complete. At some point, students must return to the Common Application and finish the entire application including the writing samples and then submit the application. II.) SYNC COMMON APP WITH NAVIANCE FAMILY CONNECTION: Once logged on Naviance, the following tasks must be completed on NAVIANCE in order to move forward in applying to colleges: 1. Select the Colleges tab. 2. Select Colleges I am applying to. 3. Enter your USER NAME for Common App (if applicable). 4. Enter your BIRTHDATE. 5. Once you ve done this correctly and you see this, you are finished: Common App Account Matching -Complete Your Common App account was successfully matched. FERPA Status: Waived

10 Add College to Naviance You can select one of two options: 1. Colleges I m thinking about. (prospective) 2. Colleges I m applying to.

11 Identifying Prospective Colleges Select lookup. A popup menu called College Picker will appear with a list of Ohio colleges and access to the search option. Mark the box to the right if you have applied to this college. At bottom of page, select add applications. Once in the College Picker popup menu, there are five ways to search for colleges & universities: -Default setting for College Picker list shows the most commonly applied to Ohio colleges & universities. - To search for specific college, enter name of college. - Browse by a letter of an alphabet. - Browse by State. - Browse by country

12 Completing College Applications COMPLETE YOUR COLLEGE APPLICATIONS: Two places to access the college s application: College admissions website (remember that you can access nearly every college s website via Naviance). Nearly all colleges provide and prefer online applications. Common Application website, There are currently more than 500 colleges and universities using the Common Application. It is recommended that students register to use the Common Application now, as it will save time later.

13 ACT/SAT Scores ACT/SAT SCORES: Check to see which colleges on student s list of prospective colleges require that ACT or SAT TEST SCORES are sent directly from the testing company. Students should arrange to have official test scores sent to the college as soon as possible (if they were not already sent at the time of the ACT or SAT test). Although these scores are listed on the PHS-North transcript, some colleges require that test scores come directly from the testing company. Please understand that this is your responsibility! How to request that official test scores are sent to colleges: a. ACT: ACT will send only the score date you ask them to send. The fee to send a test score is $12. When you register for an ACT Test, you receive four free test score reports of that test score sent to the colleges you designate. b. SAT: SAT will send all of your SAT/SAT Subject Scores that you select to a college for a fee of $ When you register for a SAT Test, you receive four free test score reports of that test score sent to the colleges you designate.

14 Transcripts TRANSCRIPTS: Colleges request that students submit an academic transcript to their college/university as part of the application process. To request that the PHSN School Counseling Office send a student s transcript to a college or university: Complete and submit a GREEN transcript request form. (Available in PHSN School Counseling Office). Make sure its filled out completely. Students must submit one GREEN transcript request form for EACH college/university they are applying to the PHSN School Counseling Office. Please hand the GREEN transcript request form to Ms. Chandler (School Counseling Office Secretary). It is not necessary to make an appointment with the student s school counselor to submit the transcript request form (unless the student has questions about the process). If students need transcripts for reasons other than for college admissions, they should check the correct line on the transcript request form. If a transcript and accompanying forms must be mailed from the PHSN School Counseling Office for scholarship purposes, please provide the paperwork that must be completed as well as an addressed and stamped envelope. Allow 10 school days for transcripts to be submitted. Be aware of deadlines. Progress of the application process will be visible on Naviance Family Connection in the colleges tab under colleges I m applying to. Look at the chart where the colleges that you applied to are listed and note the office status column. When the transcript request is made, the status will say pending. When the school counselors have submitted the student s transcript and accompanying forms, the status will say Initial materials submitted. At first the results column will say unknown but eventually it will say accepted, attending, denied, etc.

15 School Counselor Recommendations Most colleges request that student s school counselors submit a recommendation, secondary school report, and school profile. a. The PHSN School Counselors will complete these recommendations and forms through Naviance and will submit them electronically. It is not necessary for the student to give those forms to the counselor. b. In addition, it is not necessary to submit an addressed, stamped envelope with transcript requests, as long as the transcript and accompanying materials can be submitted electronically. c. The PHSN School Counselors request that all seniors needing recommendations from their assigned school counselor provide their counselor with a curriculum vitae or resume at the time that the request is made. Naviance has a resume builder in the About Me tab. Students are encouraged to enter resume information that can then be accessed by their school counselor. d. Allow a minimum of ten school days for the school counseling department to submit the recommendation and accompanying forms. Be aware of deadlines and plan ahead.

16 Teacher Recommendation Students needing a teacher recommendation should follow the following steps: a. Identify the person you are asking a recommendation: teacher, administrator, school counselor, advisor, coach, etc. b. Ask for the recommendation in person. c. Allow a minimum of ten school days for the person to complete the recommendation. Be aware of deadlines and plan ahead. d. Most PHS-North teachers have Naviance accounts and will upload your recommendation to Naviance. Once your recommendation is uploaded to Naviance, it will be sent electronically to the college(s) you have applied.

17 Teacher Recommendation, Contd. Toward bottom of colleges I m applying to page, find the Teacher Recommendations section. Select add/cancel requests. On your Naviance Family Connection Account, go to the Colleges tab and then to Colleges I m Applying to. You can select the teachers who will complete recommendations for you from the drop down menu. In the event that the teacher you have asked to write a letter of recommendation or to complete the Common Application Teacher Evaluation is not listed there, please let one of the school counselors know as soon as possible so that the teacher can be added. Select teacher(s) to complete letter of recommendation and Common Application Teacher Recommendation Form from the drop down menu. Use the text box to the right to send instructions as needed. Students must make a request of teacher to complete recommendation IN PERSON in addition to adding teacher s name here.

18 Teacher Recommendation, Contd. Provide the teacher with the following: 1.) Your complete name. 2.) Name and address of college, scholarship committee or employer to which you are applying. 3.) Your intended major in college or the position you are requesting. 4.) What you are asking them to do. Some colleges only request a letter of recommendation from a certain amount of teachers. When applying to a college that uses the Common Application, your teacher recommenders will need to complete the Common Application Teacher Evaluation Form on Naviance AND upload a letter of recommendation. 5.) Date that recommendation is to be submitted. 6.) If recommender is to mail the recommendation, the student must provide a stamped and addressed envelope. Tell the recommender the date in which the college admission office or the scholarship committee must receive the recommendation. The school counselors and many teachers will submit your recommendation electronically and will not need the stamped, addressed envelope. 7.) Copy of updated curriculum vitae or resume. 8.) Any additional information for the person writing the recommendation. 9.) Send a thank-you note to the recommender after the recommendation has been written.
