3 PARENT NOTIFICATIONS Parent Notifications are posted year round on the District website at under For Families, Annual Notifications. Federal Impact Aid Survey North Kitsap School District is conducting the Federal Impact Aid Survey. All students attending North Kitsap schools should have brought surveys home. Parents and guardians are asked to legibly fill out a form for each child attending school in black ink, date, sign, and return them ASAP. This essential survey provides the district with information about parent employment and residency, which helps schools qualify for additional federal funding through the Federal Impact Aid Program grant. Information about the Federal Impact Aid Program grant may be found at NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Congratulations to Neil Lockwood Neil Lockwood has been named a National Merit semi-finalist. Neil is the only student in the North Kitsap School District to be honored as a semi-finalist. Lockwood s test score was 1,460. A perfect score is 1,600. He received a $2,500 scholarship as a semi -finalist. He will now compete to become a finalist and be eligible for additional scholarship money. The National Merit Scholarship Program ranks the scores of students who take the PSAT/NMSQT test. About 1.6 million students take the test and only 16,000 qualify as scholars. Congratulations Neil! 4 En Français s il vous plaît Bonjour tout le monde! Voilà des nouvelles du monde francophone à NKHS : Your French 1 students can confidently greet you, ask your name and age, ask how you re doing, and say goodbye. They can also answer all these questions and talk about their classroom environment. They have learned so much in just four weeks! Please congratulate them and encourage them to practice online and with people in real life. Your French 2 students did a lovely job presenting themselves to the class in French. We found out all kinds of interesting details about their lives! It takes a special kind of confidence and courage to get up and talk about yourselves in front of your peers, and even more so in another language. Bravo to them all! Your French 3 and 4 students have recently prepared cover letters and resumes in French. Perhaps one day they ll have a chance to study, work, and live abroad! The most important thing they can do to get themselves ready is speak in, read, write in, and listen to French as often as possible. Please help them achieve this outside of school to supplement the great work they re doing while they re in school. If you re interested in our pen pal program, our sister school, our travels to France, the National French Contest, or anything else related to our work here please don t hesitate to contact me. Lola Haveman, lhaveman@nkschools.org, Bonne continuation! Madame Haveman Page 4

5 NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM The National Merit Scholarship Program commends approximately 34,000 students throughout the nation to be recognized for their academic promise. Although these students will not continue in the 2017 competition for the National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2017 competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success. These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their education opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success. (commented by a spokesperson for NMSC) North Kitsap High School is proud to announce the following students have been recognized as: NATIONAL MERIT COMMENDED STUDENTS Justin Bonus Alexander Chow Maxwell Dammarell Lia Slotten Scotlyn Whitemarsh Page 5

11 PARKING PERMITS Parking permits are sold for $40 at the beginning of the school year. All previous parking fines must be paid before students can purchase a permit. Students can only park at NKHS with a current, visible NKHS permit displayed in the vehicle. Parking is based on first come, first serve basis for all cars with a NKHS parking permit. This does not guarantee the permit holder a parking place on NKHS campus. All cars should be locked at all times. PARK AT YOUR OWN RISK. North Kitsap School District and NKHS are not responsible for theft or damage to your vehicle. OFF CAMPUS PASSES NKHS is a closed campus. However, as a privilege, juniors and seniors may apply for an off-campus permit which will allow them to be off campus during their lunch period only! Students must have all fines cleared, and turn in a completed parent permission form, (available in the Main Office). If the application is approved, an Off Campus permit sticker will be issued and placed on their NKHS ASB I.D. card. This permit is a privilege, and can be revoked by Administration or parents at any time. Page 11
