Catalog Description Bio 230 is a basic course in pathophysiology recommended for science majors and required of some allied health programs. Through this class the student gains familiarity with the basic facts, principles and terminology of pathophysiology. Lecture topics detail the normal structure and function of a system and then illustrate how changes in homeostasis can produce a diseased state. This course provides a concentrates study of the nature of disease and establishes a basis for future study. TEXT The Nature of Disease-Thomas H. McConnell nd edition with access code Grading System = A = B = C = D Below 60 = F There will be 4 exams worth a total of 80% and online discussions worth 20% of your grade. I will post a question related to the chapter/material we are studying and you will be responsible for answering my post and responding to 2 other students in a meaningful way that contributes content and facilitates dialogue. Each reply should be minimally 2-3 sentences long up to 1 paragraph, with source material cited if applicable. There will be postings of this nature and they will be grade on a scale of 0-10 with 10 being excellent. You will be responsible for all material in the electronic D2L site you will see it when you log on and quizzes as they apply to the chapter. I do not calculate these scores into your grade, rather they are for your benefit in preparing for your exam. ATTENDANCE POLICY MSAH Division Attendance Policy see AP 661: Students are expected to attend all classes and are responsible for the timely completion of all required class work. Instructors will present an outline of class work and an attendance policy on the first day of class. (Students who miss the first day of class are responsible for securing this information.) An instructor s attendance policy must be approved by a College Administrator and may be developed with consideration of factors such as the following: Some courses require the presence and participation of the student in order to meet course objectives. Some programs are accredited by agencies that mandate specific attendance requirements. Some examinations and class projects are difficult or impossible to reschedule for an individual student.

2 Students should be careful to observe the attendance policies of their instructors since these policies may sometimes affect either grades or continued status in the class. In the case of absence from the first two class hours of the term, a student may be withdrawn and allowed to enter class only if space is available. (Instructors must withdraw students who have missed all of the first three weeks of a regular term or the equivalent of a shorter term) The College is sometimes required to make attendance reports to outside agencies concerning students who are receiving veteran s benefits, social security payments, and various other federal, state, and private scholarships. Attendance Policy see AP 661 for BIO230: In a course of this nature it is imperative that students attend all classes in order to obtain maximum benefit from the materials presented. Unexcused absence(s) will result in official notification from the instructor that the student is in jeopardy of failing the course. Further absence(s) will probably result in the student receiving a failing grade. Regardless of the reason(s) for the absence(s), it is the responsibility of the student to obtain lecture/laboratory notes and become informed concerning class and laboratory activities and assignments. Only pre-approved absences will allow a student to take a make-up examination which will be at the convenience of the professor. Barring uncontrollable situations. Only one make-up examination will be allowed which will be in essay format A W grade will be issues if exiting class for unforeseen circumstances. (other grades such as W, I or Y issued with regard to AP667) ACADEMIC HONESTLY AND CLASSROOM CONDUCT Academic honestly and is expected at all times and in all work submitted by the student. The College s policy on academic dishonesty (AP 594) and classroom conduct (Reg. 592) is fully described in the Student Handbook. I use ww.turnitin.com to check for originality of work.
