8 Scholarships and Fellowships Selection Committees Our 12 Selection Committees review applications for the CGS D/PGS D and PDF programs: Earth Sciences Mathematical Sciences Chemistry Civil and Mechanical Engineering Plant and Animal Biology Electrical Engineering Evolution and Ecology Physics and Astronomy Cellular and Molecular Biology Chemical, Biomedical and Materials Science Engineering Psychology Computing Sciences IMPORTANT: The research subject code you select in your application will determine your Selection Committee! 8

9 Where do you apply and when? Apply through your current university if: You are currently registered at, or are on an approved leave of absence from, a Canadian university in a degree program. Apply through the university where you were registered if: you are not currently registered at a university or are registered, but not in a degree program, and you graduated from a degree program from a Canadian university during the calendar year in which you are applying. Deadline: verify with your university! 9

10 Apply directly to NSERC ONLY if: You are currently registered at a foreign university You are not currently registered at a university or are registered, but not in a degree program, and you graduated from a degree program prior to January of the year of application Deadline: Applications must be received electronically by 8:00 p.m. (ET) on October 15 10

13 Value Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) Vanier CGS $50,000 per year for three years Open to: Canadian citizens Permanent residents of Canada Foreign citizens Minimum Average First-class in each of the last two years of completed study (fulltime equivalent) as determined by your institution How and when do I apply? When are awards announced? You must be nominated by a Canadian Institution with a quota; Institutional nomination by November 4 at 8:00 p.m. (ET)* By the end of March * Contact your Office of Graduate Studies for the university-specific deadline 13

14 In addition, you must: be pursuing your first doctoral degree (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD) not have completed more than 20 months of doctoral studies as of May 1, 2016 not have received previous doctoral level funding from CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC Evaluation Criteria (weighted equally): Academic Excellence Research Potential Leadership (potential and demonstrated ability) 14

15 Candidates may only apply to the same federal granting agency's doctoral scholarship/fellowship program and the Vanier CGS program simultaneously within the same academic year. Justification required to complete doctoral degree at the same university where you earned a previous degree. The application form and more information are found at the Vanier CGS website ( 15

16 Canada Graduate Scholarships Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement (CGS-MSFSS) Candidates: Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents of Canada registered at an eligible Canadian institution have accepted or hold a CGS (Master s or Doctoral) or Vanier CGS (if eligible) must not have accepted a previous CGS-MSFSS Applications: submitted through the University, within their assigned quota Awards: recipients must hold an active CGS at start of award maximum value of $6,000 (covers travel, living and other non-research related costs) duration of 3 to 6 months start date must be after the application deadline and within one year of receiving notice of award 16

Mid-January 2016 Canadian universities provincial research institutions in Canada Other appropriate research laboratory in Canada universities and research centres abroad (PhD must be from Canadian university) 20

44 Eligibility of Proposed Research / Program of Study (max 1 page) NSERC supports research whose major challenges lie in the natural sciences and engineering (NSE), other than the health sciences NSERC does not support programs that include a professional component (i.e., MD/PhD) Consult NSERC s Eligibility Criteria for Students and Fellows NSERC makes the final decision with respect to mandate Justification for the eligibility of proposed research should be completed for any research that may overlap with CIHR/SSHRC. If in doubt, fill it out! May only apply to one agency per academic year 44

46 Common mistakes when writing research proposal / contributions Lack of focus or coherence Repetitive Failure to cite important work in the area Failure to cite recent relevant work Cite too may irrelevant articles Rely too much on secondary sources (lack of understanding) Too much details on minor issues; too little detail on major issues Research contributions not properly highlighted Impact / importance of research not explained 46

47 Transcripts Must be up-to-date and official A transcript must be provided for each program listed under Academic Background (doctoral studies only for PDF) Scanned and uploaded into one PDF file, including a copy of university legend for each set of transcripts Formatted as a black-and-white printed document, and, where possible, in portrait style Hardcopies may be requested, should you be successful in the competition 47

48 Report on the Applicant: two reports required Person most familiar with applicant s research and other abilities often thesis supervisor Another person familiar with your research and other abilities Able to provide meaningful commentary and specific examples If thesis supervisor not providing a report, reasons should be indicated under special circumstances Names and addresses of your referees will be required for the On-line System to generate an inviting the referees to complete their report and the deadline by which it should be submitted 48
