OPENING REMARKS BY THE CHANCELLOR The Chancellor informed that HGI celebrated the 73 rd Birth Anniversary of Founder Chairman, Dr. K.C.G. Verghese on During the event, Dr. K.C.G. Verghese Excellence Awards were presented to achievers in business arena and other notable fields. 24

4 Tan Sri Dr. Tony Fernandes, Chief Executive Officer, Air-Asia was honoured with the Life Time Achievement Award. The Chancellor also informed about the online entrance examination conducted for admission to UG Engineering courses. She said that more number of students were admitted in UG Engineering courses even though there is a decline in the admission for the UG Engg. courses in other colleges as per media reports. She also added that an orientation training was conducted for the first year students and the classes have already started. She informed that the University has been awarded B grade by NAAC. The MHRD has retained B Grade to the University. She said that an appeal is made to MHRD and the outcome is awaited. She emphasized the need to strengthen the research activities and advised the staff to publish more Research papers. She also requested the Directors, Deans, HODs and Senior Professors to put more efforts in the progressive direction to take the Institution to the greater heights. 2. ADDRESS BY THE VICE-CHANCELLOR The Vice-Chancellor in his address expressed his sincere thanks to the Chancellor, the Directors, the Registrar and all the members present for the meeting. He informed the following : Dr. K.C.G. Verghese Excellence Award 2013 a well-organized function, was attended by many dignitaries from India and overseas. NAAC awarded Grade B to the University with 2.82 points and it is short of mere 0.18 points, for securing Grade A. He expressed his hope to improve and get Grade A within a span of 2 years. University has been Accredited by the International Accreditation Organisation. University has become a member of Association of Indian Universities. (Deemed universities need to be in existence for five years to become eligible for membership) International Conference on Materials for Energy and Nanoconvergence was conducted between 4 th & 6 th July It was well received and appreciated by all participants. Indian Institute of Science for the first time has agreed to conduct International Conference ADCOM 2013 at Hindustan campus between 21 st & 25 th October The experts from ACCS (Advanced Computing & Communication System) visited our campus to see the facilities available in the campus and were pleased to inform that such facilities are not available even in institutions, like IISc, IITs. They expressed their willingness to conduct the conference in Hindustan University campus in which selected number of faculty members, research scholars and students can register, free of cost. A one day workshop on Outcome Based Curriculum was conducted for the benefit of faculty members at Hindustan Campus by resource persons of NITTTR. The Centre for Defence Technology Studies of the Hindustan University has completed one year on 13 th July On this occasion, a CDTS Annual Lecture will be conducted on 29 th July Lieutenant General (Dr.) Prakash Menon, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, Military 25

5 Advisor to the National Security Advisor and Former Commandant of the National Defence College has consented to deliver a lecture on India s Cyber Security Challenges. NBA documents for the five departments, Aero, Civil, Automobile, Mechanical and CSE will be completed as early as in the 1 st week of September 2013 for submission. 3. CONFIRMATION OF THE MINUTES OF 13 TH ACADEMIC COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON The Director (Academic) read out the Minutes of the 13 th Academic Council Meeting held on and the Academic Council confirmed the minutes of the meeting. 4. ACTION TAKEN REPORT ON THE 13 TH ACADEMIC COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON The Action Taken Report on the minutes of 13 th was confirmed with the following observation:- Academic Council Meeting held on Dr. Aby Sam, Director informed that the internal marks of the students should be maintained properly by the departments for at least five years even for the passed out students. He also informed that some of the students secured high marks in internal tests and low marks in external examinations. It will definitely have an impact on the image of the Institution. We have to review our evaluation system. It was suggested to bring in new examination reforms which involve more responsibility to our faculty members for the conduct of external examination. The Vice-Chancellor informed that it will be discussed in the next IQAC meeting. 5 Items for approval Sl. No (a) Items Academic regulations for P.G. It was suggested to modify the curriculum in consultation with Director (Academic) Approved. Spelling mistakes in page No 28 (Financial Accounts) and Page No 25 (Management) need correction. Chairperson Board of Studies for Fashion Design and Arts. Action IT- HOD and Director (Academic) Director (Academic) HOD - School of Management (a) Introduction of P.G. Diploma in Advertising Photography course from the academic year Approved with following amendments:- 1. A chapter in Light metering to be added before the chapter Metering spot and Averaging in Module No 1 in semester Module No 8 - The word Saree to be substituted by Indian wear. 3. Roy Chowdhury - Dean (Research) Decision Taken Dr. Roy Chowdhury has informed that the faculty members are not coming forward to register for Ph.D. and apply for international scholarships. We are looking for Adjunct faculties from research organizations and industries for guiding our Ph.D. scholars. The members suggested the following : - to consider fee concession for our faculty members to encourage them to pursue Ph.D. 28

8 to include the name of the guide also along with the details of Ph.D. scholars in the presentation to the Academic Council. to identify two to three critical areas from where the research activities can flourish. (b) Review of Performance of P.G. programmes. - Prof. V. Subbiah, Dean (PG Studies) to bring out Hand Book on major facilities available for information. The Vice- Chancellor informed that the details are already available in our website. Noted. (c) Examination Performance Review. - Dr. A. Joseph Stanley, Director (Academic) Noted 8. Any other items with the permission of the Chair. The Director (AV) informed that we keep on increasing the number of programmes but on the other hand, the strength of students is decreasing and admission policy reforms are to be done to attract students for various courses. The members suggested that there is no need for P.G. Diploma / Diploma certificate courses to place before the Academic Council for approval. Only degree courses need to be placed before the Academic Council for approval. Vice-Chancellor Dr. K. Sarukesi completes his tenure on 31 st July On this occasion, Dr. (Mrs.) Elizabeth Verghese, Dr. Aby Sam, Director, Dr. S. Ramachandran, Advisor, Dr. A.Joseph Stanley, Director (Academic), Dr. Pon Ramalingam, (Registrar), Mr. Ashok Verghese, Director, Dr. Gopalji Maliviya, Dean (CDTS) and external members, Dr. Muthiah Mariappan, Former Vice-Chancellor, Bharathidasan University, Prof. T.R. Jagadeesan, Former Director, College of Engineering, Anna University, Prof. S. Santhakumar, Dean, Department of Aerospace Engineering, IIT, Chennai, Mr. B. Viswanath, General Manager Engineering, Delphi TVS, Chennai have felicitated Dr. K. Sarukesi for his dedication and excellent service rendered as Vice-Chancellor in Hindustan University from August 2008 to July The Vice-Chancellor thanked the Management and members of the Academic Council for all the support and cooperation. The following suggestions were made to improve the pass percentage in 1 st and 2 nd year students :- In Engineering Mechanics - more tutorial classes are to be conducted and the students are to be asked to work out the problems in the class itself. o Engineering Graphics to be made as practical subject instead of theory subject. 29

9 o The syllabus for Mathematics subject to be restructured in every department concerned. The Director (AV) informed that he had noticed a lot of mistakes in a question paper for the University Examination and it should not happen in future. The Vice- Chancellor informed that he has already given instructions to the HODs that the faculty members handling the subjects to check the question papers within 30 minutes from the commencement of the examination and report to the Controller of Examinations, if any mistakes are found, for informing the students in the examination hall immediately for necessary correction. 9.
