9 BUP and the EU Strategy for the BSR BUP has participated p in both Stakeholder events (September 08 in Stockholm, March 09 in Rostock) BUP sent in an input the the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea region after the Centre Directors meeting January 2009 in Tallinn The Baltic University Programme a flagship pproject and as the largest university network in the BSR and as an important actor. We offered to take the lead in university networking in the BSR on SD (May 2009)

10 EU Strategy for the BSR Flagship projects: Education: Enhance cooperation on a voluntary basis between the regional Universities of the Baltic Sea Region so that they coordinate their activities (research areas, exchange of students/ professors/researchers, cooperation with enterprises). This could e.g. be based on the existing networks of universities such as the Baltic Sea University i Programme with almost all universities of the region and the Baltic atcsea Region University stynetwork with 40 members.

11 Important issues for theeu s strategy for thebsr Promote cooperation between universities, university teachers & university students. Support international networks & their national nodes. Establish & makeavailablegrantsavailable for regional cooperation within the BSR for development of university courses, for cooperative projects & research. Promote education of university students on sustainable development SD & climate change (decision makers of the future & will be affected by today s decisions). Promote & support the development of university courses on the different aspects of SD & of education for SD.

12 BUP on the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea region A long term & SD is needed to ensure that the region will be an environmentally friendly, prosperous, accessible & attractive, as well as safer & more secure place. BUP develops & holds courses, seminars, conferences & leads & participates in projects & applied research. Target groups: university students, university teachers & the society around the universities. In projects cooperate with stakeholders, e.g. municipalities, organizations, NGO s, industry sector. Members in Baltic 21.

We strongly support the implementation of sustainable development within the BSR.

17 BALTIC SUSTAIN The focus of the Flagship Project Strengthening Co operation on a voluntary basis between universities iti of the Baltic Sea Region on co operation in the field of sustainable development in the Baltic Sea Region: will be of instrumental t assistance it in the search for solutions to the problems the region currently faces & help to integrate environmental protection with economical growth & social welfare. Cross sectoral: It means that it involve universities on the one hand, but also government offices, local authorities & NGOs on the other hand, hence being integrative, inclusive and results oriented, ensuring its outputs are used in practice. 36 months. Starts in October 2010 & completed in October 2013.

18 BALTIC SUSTAIN There is at present little transnational and cross sectoral cooperation between universities in the Baltic Sea Region with local authorities, municipalities and NGOs in key areas such as sustainable development. This project, a flagship project (fast track) of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region aims to: modernise the study programmes of universities in the field of sustainable development create cooperative programmes on sustainable development foster cooperation among universities, local authorities and municipalities by means of concrete pilot projects
