1 BIBLIOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF INDIAN JOURNAL OF MARKETING DURING Shashikant C.Gudodagi Librarian Karnataka Sangha s Manjunatha College of Commerce Kanchangaon, Khambalpada, Thakurli (East) Dist: Thane, Maharashtra gudodagi@yahoo.co.in ABSTRACT Indian Journal of Marketing is one of the premier and reputed peer reviewed monthly journal of Marketing. The journal was first published in the year 1968 and it has completed 44 years of its publication. This paper presents bibliometric analyses of Indian Journal of Marketing during The analysis covers various parameters like growth pattern, authorship patterns, citation-wise distribution of research papers, etc. Keywords: Bibliometric analysis, content analysis 1.INTRODUCTION: The Indian journal of marketing is a reputed double blind peer reviewed monthly journal in the filed of Marketing. The journal was first published in the year It is the oldest the only monthly Indian journal of Marketing. It contains scholarly research papers written by reputed personalities in the field of marketing, commerce and economics. To accomplish the below mentioned objectives the bibliometric principles are applied. The term bibliometrics was coined by Pritchard in Bibliometric focuses principally on the quantitative study of written products of research. Bibliometric studies are used to identify the pattern of publication, authorship, citations and journal coverage with the hope that such studies can give an insight into the dynamics of the field under consideration (Vijayakumar & Naqvi, 2002). Due to the explosion of information, huge quantity of literature is publishing across the World. With the escalating cost of periodicals, journals and with limited library budget, the librarians are finding difficulty in acquiring all the published literature. Hence the selection of any particular periodical or journal for a library should be done carefully, so that the subscribed journal is useful for its library users. These bibliometric studies will be helpful for librarians in collection development. The present study has been undertaken in order to know the nature and contents of research papers published in Indian Journal of Marketing during the period

2 2. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY: The Objectives of the present study are: 1. To analyze the number of papers published (year wise). 2. To study number of references cited 3. To study the length of research papers 4. To know the authorship patterns 5. To understand the Geographical distribution of Contributions 3. SCOPE: The present study is made on the oldest monthly journal in the field of marketing i.e Indian Journal of Marketing. For the present study total 96 issues of the Indian Journal of marketing from the year 2005 to 2012 are considered. 4. METHODOLOGY: The data of all the 96 issues of the Indian Journal of Marketing were scanned for the required data related to the Number of author, Number of pages, References, research papers per issue was noted down. The same data was entered in the spreadsheet and the data was then subjected to analysis as per the objectives of the study. 5. LITERATURE REVIEW: Vijay and Raghavan (2007) studied bibliometric analysis of Food and Science Technology. The result of the study indicates that there is an increase in the number of contributions in successive volumes with India being the major contributor. The study also reveals that highest numbers of contributions are from the joint authors. Thanuskodi(2010) explored the bibliographic study of Journal of Social Science. The study reveals that even though the journal has a short history of 12 years but the journal is serving as a forum of social scientists. The study reveals that, highest numbers of articles have appeared in the area of economics. The study also revealed that, majority of articles % contains references from the journals. Swain and Panda (2011) studied the bibliometric analysis of Journal of Intellectual Property Rights from the year The study reveals that, Journal of Intellectual Property Rights, European Intellectual Property Review, Research Policy, World Patent Information, Trademark Reporter, and Current Science are the most cited journals. Thanuskodi (2011) studied the Library Herald Journal for the period between In this study, the author came up with the findings that the maximum number of contributions of 57% came for the single author. The study also shows that maximum number of articles contributed to the journal is from India. The study reveals that highest numbers of articles are published on the subject area of Library automation. Warraich and Ahmad (2011) made an exhaustive bibliometric study of Pakistan Journal of Library and Information Science and reported their findings regarding the author productivity, 94

3 authorship collaboration, institutional affiliation, authors geographic affiliation, type of publication, language of papers, number of citations used per article, length of papers, and yearwise distribution of papers. Jena et al. (2012) conducted a bibliometric study of Annals of Library and Information Studies from The Study reveals that the contribution of articles to the Annals of Library and Information Studies is constantly increasing. The Study also shows that the articles with two authors are in maximum numbers followed by single author. Regolini and Jannès-Ober (2013) in their study of Informing Science: The International Journal of an Emerging Transdiscipline, revealed that the study provides an overview of knowledge dissemination in various disciplines. The study also demonstrates the high degree of transdisciplinarity of Informing Science 6. 4 The analysis shows that in all 1180 authors contributed the 701 papers. Table No.II depicts the authorship pattern in the journal. The total numbers of 701 contributions were made during the period papers (44.36%) were contributed by single-author. Two authors contributed the maximum papers 318 (45.36%) and ranked the highest among all other categories. 61 articles (8.70) were contributed by three authors. Four, Five and Six authored contributions count is 7 (0.99%), 2(0.28%) and 2 (028%) respectively. Table-III: 6.3 Geographical Distribution of Contributions (State Wise): S. Out of the total 1180 research papers 1115 (94.49%) Papers are from India. Among the Indian contributions Tamil Nadu state stands first in the list with maximum number of 302(27.09%) research papers. Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka contributed 135 (12.11%) & 109(9.78%) papers and stood 2 nd and 3 rd in the list. The major chunk of research papers were contributed by these three southern states. 6 Total 1180 authors contributed 701 research papers during the period The Table-V shows that maximum number i.e 884 (86.84%) authors contributed one research paper, followed by 108(10.61%) authors contributed two papers. Three and Four papers were contributed by 24(2.36%) & 2(0.20%) authors respectively. This shows that only few authors are regularly contributing to the journal. Length of paper Table-VI: 6.6 Length of Papers: TOTAL and more TOTAL % Table VI shows that 16.55% of the papers cover 1-4 pages followed by 22.68% of papers covers 9-12 pages. Maximum numbers of papers 57.20% are between 5-8 pages. Only 3.57 % of papers are of length more than 13 pages. No. of References Table-VII: 6.7 Study of References/Citations: TOTAL % Nil and more TOTAL Table VII gives details of the number of references cited by the authors in their respective papers published from Out of the 701 research papers, 281 (40.09 %) have 1-10 references; followed by 224 papers (31.95%) with references; 102 papers (14.55%) with references; and 79 papers (11.27%) with more than 30 references. 15(2.14%) papers had no references. 98

7 7. CONCLUSION: Indian Journal of Marketing has indeed established itself as the oldest and leading marketing journal in the country. It is now available not only in print format but also in electronic format. The papers predominantly contributed by single author indicate that individual authors rather than research teams are active in the field of Marketing. The journal has published 701 articles during the period of study. The maximum number of research papers (14.27%) was published in the year The study reveals that, the maximum numbers of contributions are from the Two Authors with 45.36%.
