1 SHYAMA PRASAD MUKHERJI COLLEGE (University of Delhi) Courses Details offered by the College BA(Hons) Minimum percentage of marks for admission to BA(H) is 45% in aggregate at any examination recognized by University of Delhi The restructure BA/B.Sc. (Hons.) Course besides papers of main subject consist of interdisciplinary / concurrent course, Language Credit and language Qualifying courses be distributed among the six semesters. The distribution of marks will be as follows Type of Paper Max. Marks End Semester Internal Assessment Examination Main Paper Concurrent courses, where-ever applicable Credit courses for B.Sc.(H) Mathematics The marks of the concurrent and credit course shall be counted in the final result of students. A student has to pass the qualifying course to be eligible for Honours degree; However the marks of this course will not be counted in the final division marks. BA(H) Honours in subject other than Language / Literature : Concurrent Courses 1. Language Qualifying Course (Non-Credit) : Language Qualifying Course (Non Credit): Students may be required to choose one Qualifying Language other than the compulsory language (mentioned in 1 above) i.e. If compulsory language is English, the student might choose Hindi or Sanskrit as a Qualifying subject. The options are: (1) English (Higher/Lower), (2) Hindi (Higher/ Lower), (3) Sanskrit. 2. Language Credit Course: Students may be offered one compulsory language credit course from English, Hindi, Sanskrit. However, for those students who have not studied any of the above languages after class VII, provision has been made to opt for one of the Interdisciplinary Courses. The language streams in Hindi will be given as follows. Higher Hindi - Students who have studied Hindi upto Class X & XII. Lower Hindi -Studied Hindi upto Class VIII. Students who opt for compulsory language course in English will be offered the higher Qualifying course in Hindi and vice versa.

2 Students who have not studied any of the three languages offered after class VIII, or if the language that they have studied after class VI11 is not offered by the college, they will in that case, not be required to take the Qualifying course in language but instead they will opt for an Interdisciplinary course. Number of students admitted in various courses will determine the formation of sections. B.A. Honours in Language / Literature Compulsory Course A student enrolled in B.A. (Hons.) course where a literature subject is the main discipline (namely English, Hindi, Sanskrit) shall not be required to take a Compulsory Language in Main discipline but can opt for a different Language Course or will opt for one of the following compulsory interdisciplinary courses :- English Department: Individual and Society Hindi Department: Hindi Language, Literature and Culture Sanskrit Department: Nationalism and Indian Literature. Qualifying Course: For language / literature students, the qualifying language course has to be chosen from among the remaining languages. Discipline Centred Courses (wherever applicable) The detailed courses for different Honours subjects are given in the table below: - Hons. 3 Applied Psychology History, Political Science, Philosophy, Economics B.Sc.(H) Computer Science -- Political Science (Hons.) The medium of instruction in Political Science (Hons.) will be Hindi. English medium section will be formed if the number of students opting for English medium is Admission to this course will not be given to students having science an commerce as a subject in 12th class Economics (Hons.) Admission to Eco (Hons.) shall be given only to those students who have studied mathematics and English upto XII with; least 75% in Maths and 65% in English. The medium of instruction shall be English only. Mathematics (Hons.) The medium of instruction shall be English only. Hindi (Hons.) Candidates who have passed the intermediate examination of an Indian University/Board with at least 60% marks in the subject shall be eligible for admission to Hindi (Hons.) Applied psychology (Hons.) A student applying for this course must have studied English upto class XII. A candidate who has passed the intermediate exam with the aggregate of60% marks in English will be eligible for admission to this course. The medium of instruction will be English. Sanskrit (Hons.) Minimum Percentage An aggregate of 45% marks in the qualifying examination. Candidates securing 40% marks in the aggregate and 50% marks in the subject concerned are also eligible for admission to the Sanskrit (Hons.) course. B.Sc.(H) Computer Science Candidates seeking admission to B.Sc.(H) Computer Science must have studied Maths, Eng at 10+2 level with minimum of 65% in maths and sound knowledge of basic concepts and their applications. Specific Requirement Candidates who have passed the intermediate examination of an Indian University/Board with at was 40% marks in the aggregate in Shastri examination are also eligible for this course. B.Com (Hons.) / B.Com.Programme Admission to B.Com (Hons.) will be allowed only to those students who have studied Commerce and Mathematics in their Senior Secondary Examination. In B.Com. Programme admission is allowed to those students who have studied Commerce in their Senior Secondary Examination. One Commerce related vocational subject may be

4 considered. Marks of only one language will be considered. The medium of instruction will be English. However, a student is free to appear in the University Examination in any medium (English/Hindi) B.Com (Hons.) A student offering this course is required to do 26 papers over a period of six semesters. English B.A. Programme The minimum percentage of marks required for admission to BA. Programme is 40% of the aggregate at any of the examinations recognized by the University of Delhi. Economics / Political Science / History/Computer Application Economics / Maths / Geography Students opting for computer application must have studied English and Maths/Computers at 10+2 level. The following disciplines are helpful to the students in getting self-employment: Food Technology Food technology imparts scientific knowledge about food and technical skills of food processing especially in Baking and Food Preservation. The students can use this knowledge in their everyday life and can also become self-employed. Family and Child Welfare This subject deals with various phases of child development, government and nongovernment initiatives for women and children. Special training in pre-school education is given to students which may help them to find employment in nursery schools and Balwadis. Music The college offers vocal music & instrumental music(sitar) also as disciplines in B.A. (Programme). For admission in music preference will be given to those candidates who have had music as subject in 8th or 10th or 1 2th standard in the school. All those students who have learnt music in a private institution at least of three years may also be given preference. B. Language Courses (i) English (A/B/C) (ii) Hindi (A/B) English Hindi Stream A: Students who have passed English at Class XII Stream B: passed English at Class X Stream C: studied English up till Class VIII No change in the stream will be allowed. Stream A: passed Hindi in Class XII. Stream B: passed Hindi in Class X or in Class VIII For those who have not studied Hindi can take Philosophy instead of Hindi. They will however, be allowed to take only History & Political Science as two discipline subjects. C Foundation Courses offered in IInd year. A student may opt for any one of the following:

7 Language, Literature & Culture : This course aims at increasing the students awareness of language function and significant formal and thematic features of the literature in Indian Languages. This course includes the areas such as language and communication, language in society, language variation, linguistic diversity and language policy in India. Contemporary India : This course will focus on the working of Indian Economy, expected learning outcomes of the course are the basic features of Indian Economy in 1947, the evaluation of economic policy since independence, dimensions of some at the major economic problems and examination of public policy relating to them. Some constituents of economic policy i.e. liberalisation in financial and trade sectors etc. are also subject of study. Social Enquiry : The course is intended to introduce the students to the branches of knowledge. The subject will focus on social enquiry and forms of social enquiry. This course will also include the concepts of knowledge such as history, philosophy politics, society, economy, psychology, environment and culture. Human Rights, Gender and Environment: The course aims at enabling the students to understand the issues concerning the rights of citizens in general and marginalized groups in particular. The Conceptual dimensions of social inequality, human rights gender and environment form the contents of the course. All these courses are taught in both English and Hindi medium. D. Application Courses A student may opt for any one of the following application courses in Illrd year 1. Banking & Insurance (English/Hindi Medium) 2. Computer Application (English Medium) 3 Nutrition & Health (English/Hindi Medium) 4. Mass Communication (English/Hindi Medium) 5. Tourism (English/Hindi Medium) 6. Fitness, Aerobics and Gym Operation(Engljsh/Hindi Medium) Subject Requirements for Admission 1. A student who has not already qualified Hindi in the Marticulation/ClassXII/lndian School Certificate Examination or equivalent examination with higher or lower Hindi shall have to pass a Compulsory test in Hindi in first year class. 2. Computer Application as discipline is open only to those students who have passed English and Maths/Computer at classxii. 3. A student opting for mathematics as a discipline must have secured minimum 60% in the subject. 4. Student passing Senior Secondary Examination with Vocational subjects are eligible for admission only to the Vocational subjects taught in this College. The only vocational subjects to be considered are computer science, Home Science, creative writing, translation studies and Financial Market management. * But the consideration of these subjects will be restricted to specific courses and will be at discretion of the admission committee.

8 5. Subject combination allotted to the students will be decided on the basis of their marks in the respective subjects 6. Students of B.A. Programme admitted to a lower course in English (Stream B or Stream C) may be permitted to offer the next higher course (i.e. Stream A or Stream B) in the second and the third year of B.A,. Programme provided they secure at least 60% marks in English in the B.A. Programme Part I examination. Such students will be deemed to have done the higher course in English if they pass in the B.A. Part II Examination in that course. B.EI. Ed. & B.Ed. We at Shyma Prasad Mukherji College run two professional teacher training courses namely Bachelor of Education (B. Ed.) and Bachelor or Elementry Education (B.EI.Ed.). B.Ed, a one year course, prepares teacher for the secondary & senior secondary level and B.EI.Ed a 4 years programme prepares teachers for the elementary level (Class I-VIII). The admission to both the courses is done by the Dept. of Education University of Delhi through a centrally conducted admission test. The eligibility conditions* for B.Ed and B.EI.Ed are as follows: Examination passed and percentage of marks required (A) Candidates seeking admission to the Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.EI.Ed.) programme must have passed the Class XII examination of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) or any other Board recognised as equivalent to the CBSE with at least 55% marks in the aggregate and 50% marks in each of the following four subjects**.
